I think that it was just an unfortunate incident with the nest design and losing #2 this year. I know that WW said they are taking this into consideration to fix the design for next season. Hello Diane yes I am sad too over the loss of #2. Hopefully next season they will make the necessary modifications to the nest construction so this does not happen again. ♥ Mom seems to be figuring it out now with #1 moving closer to her to get fed too ♥

Hello EmiW I think so too! 💕 It has been sad with so many losses on the nests recently. I think that the oldest Hobby chick should be big enough now to reach out to Mom with its beak from any place on the rails. So sad the nest construction prevented her from being able to feed #2. She is a good Mom ♥

Hello Hugh and thank you for your question. Wildlife Windows commented on the nest construction this year versus the previous years and they found the Hobby's like this design in general but this year the rails were a bit too high. Last year we had a different female and she did not encounter any problems feeding her two chicks which fledged successfully but this year we have a new Mom which may have also played a role in the feeding and her positioning on the rails. Here is what they posted about the nest: " We have been watching the camera and watching the chat comments. There has been much discussion about the nest basket / female feeding the chicks. This has been concerning.We have been studying hobbies for approx. 20 years and been using these artificial baskets for nearly as long. We do make them quite deep as the hobbies do like this (like a crow nest) as it does offer them protection from passing predators and wind. However, this particular nest has created challenges for this new female. Problem is we couldn’t do anything about this at this time. Firstly, our permits in the UK would not allow this kind of intervention and even if we could get a permit to make alterations this is a bad time to be disturbing the nest. The chicks are very small and so vulnerable to predators (magpies/sparrowhawks/woodpeckers etc.). If we were to go in and make alterations and the chicks were predated while the female was off the nest this would be disastrous. As we thought the female has found a way to feed the chicks and they have got through the first few crucial days of life, they are getting bigger every day. We will need to take these last few days as learning experience and be aware that the finest of margins can make a difference. Even people who have been doing things for a long time can learn things. Setting up a live stream on a wild hobby nest from the start of the breeding process is an extremely difficult thing which is why you will find this is the only live hobby nest camera in the whole of Europe. Hello the first time Mom could not reach the youngest chick to properly feed it and it passed away. The nest rails were too high for her to reach down - she was able to reach the oldest chick. They will be looking at the design of the nest rails for next year so this does not happen again.
