When you're bayou fishing, there's always the chance you are going to catch a monster. But sometimes you catch a dangerous one. In this episode I go fishing for the biggest catfish and alligator gar Houston has to offer, but I end up catching some else first. Something truly giant.

Nice catches. I was a U of H photographer in the late 80s and early 90s and remember when the Houston Zoo drained the alligator/turtle pond for maintenance. They took measurements of a snapper that was enormous, 200+ pounds. I got it on film, good times!

Great to have you back my friend! That snapper was amazing! Off the top of my head, you've caught #150 gars, rays, turtles, and sharks if I'm not mistaken. Perhaps one day, you could compile all of your biggest catches into one Giants of Houston style video! Now you just need a #150 catfish!

You can count the rings on the bottom side of its shell to get an idea of age, also by measuring its shell, 3 inches for the first year and 1 inch per year after that.

@@drshin9893 this is youtube so I can't necessarily show you anything, but I promise you that you can count the rings on the bottom of their shell, go ahead and look for yourself, this method doesn't work well as the turtles get older and their lines fade together but it will work well on juveniles for sure! Do a little research before you try correcting people with your opinion I literally did 2 papers on snapping turtles in North America while earning my bachelor's in biological science...

I’m afraid to hook one of these dudes. I wouldn’t know how to unhook it. I hate the thought of a sophisticated 80 year old individual living in misery, bleeding, unable to eat and ultimately infected with that hook embedded in its mouth. I know these are accidental catches but I wish it wouldn’t happen. I do know of a study done at Careleton Lab where hooks were deliberately put in pikes’s mouths and the vast majority were later found removed. The pike were able to remove them. Barbless hooks were more consistently removed by the pike so I use those whenever possible. Love this channel! Good work.

I live in south Houston and I moved here from London 3 1/2 years ago. My main fishing there was for specimen carp/catfish. But since Ive lived here I really got into saltwater fishing. But Ive watched all of your vids and you inspired me to give it a go for a big gar. I got no idea of where to fish but went to Buffalo Bayou armed with fresh mullet chunks and my 1st 'fish' was a MASSIVE snapping turtle. Scared the crap out of me! But managed to unhook/release it OK. 5 minutes in my 2nd cast I caught a alligator gar longer than me and Im 6'3". My wife was going crazy at sight of it. I would like to do more this year but got no idea of spots to try. I know youve worked hard and spent years finding great spots and dont want those secret spots. But would appreciate a vid with say 5 areas around Houston that we could catch a nice Gar. If you dont ask you dont get haha EDIT: I dont get notified about new vids. I have the same problem with notifications for my channel too. KZfaqs not always good like that.

I'm not a Herpetologist either but I took it in College and being a Fish guy I frequently encounter Reptiles & Amphibians. All I can tell you is it's older than both us combined. Estimates are just that- educated guesses. I can say it's a she being that big. Most Animals growth slows down dramatically at a certain point as well as nutritional availability.

I have wrangled turtles for years. These large snappers will take fingers off if you are not careful. The rope you used is fine but awkward. Next time you are fishing and catch one, find a large stick and place it in his mouth. He'll clamp down on it and you can drag him out a lot easier than the rope. Give it a try. Just have a stick handy before you start fishing just in case. Greg

Big Cat Fever, though they each have their drawbacks. The Tiger has one of the best handle lengths of any casting rod but is only 7 feet total. Would love it to be 7 feet 6 inches or 8 feet (ideal). The Big Cat Fever is a softer action and can handle pretty much anything but have a very short handle length.

Genuine question… I’m not sure the regulation for gar and catfish there but why wouldn’t u just use a big treble hook… hookup ratio would probably be better.. it would be worse for the fish tho… what’s ur take on it?
@wildlifefishingshow
@wildlifefishingshow 2 жыл бұрын
I'm exclusively a catch and release guy for gar, as they are still a very vulnerable species. Treble hooks require letting gar completely swallow the hook, making it nearly impossible to unhook them. Circle hooks actually work really well when you adapt the technique somewhat (I'm making a video on this) and can be completely removed. Since I want the fish to live I avoid Treble hooks, even if it means I miss a few here and there.
