The weather during this shipping container build has been all over the map! We filmed this last week and had over a foot of snow and now as I write this description almost all of it has melted! Who knows, maybe Spring is already here?!
It's been such a treat to start spending more time as a family up at the container and inch by inch the build is progressing. Hope you enjoy this peaceful glimpse into our winter routine up on the mountain.
Big hugs,
Dana

It looks to be that Lou is having way too much fun in the snow! 😂. And Dana you have such a great soothing tonal voice - you should record some children’s audio books … And as always Max, (Lou’s mini me) just stole the show - thanks for sharing. 😊

Hi there, I’m the gal from the wilderness of northern 🇨🇦 who recommended the roof rake… I see that yours is getting plenty of good use. Far out!! Can I also just say that snow acts like a sponge, so when it does eventually warm up and rain, the weight of the wet snow on your roof and on the wall tent will be about four times heavier than what it was when it was dry. If it starts raining, your roof rake will certainly be a valuable tool. Also, when the time comes, you will love your studded winter tires. My partner and I have them on our “his and hers” small pick-ups trucks, and they are worth every penny!! Do you have weight (sandbags) in the back of your vehicles? This really helps provide extra traction. One thing we do is we each have a covered “sandbox” in the box of our small pick-up trucks. We have found that sand bags freeze, puncture, roll around, and they never lay flat which makes it really challenging when we have to carry a lot of stuff in the box of the truck. At the beginning of every winter my partner puts together the covered “sandbox” (which he has made from plywood) in our truck boxes. We fill the “sandbox” with sandbags and then screw down the plywood cover on top. This gives us weight in the back end, and a flat surface in the box of the pick-up. We use the same “sandbox” and the same sand bags every year, so while this was an initial investment of money, it is reusable every winter. I just thought I would throw these few tips into my comment here because these things have been really helpful to us. I love your energy and your positivity; it’s really refreshing. Your videos are always so interesting. We live a similar lifestyle and so many of your values resonate with me. Thanks so much for allowing me to share my experiences and knowledge with you here in this space. I appreciate you and your family. Spring is just around the mountain… YeeHaw… bring it on!! Hugs to you from northern 🇨🇦, Ⓜary🌲

You guys should get a radio/maybe even a record player for when you guys spend more of the day there so you have something else to do so you don't get so bored being "trapped" in the own shipping container during winter time I'm sure you won't want to spend a ton of time outside when it's freezing 🥶

Eventually, a steep, protective roof (like they put over mobile homes sometimes - wooden frame, corrugated metal roof) over the wall tent might not be a bad idea so the snow would slide off and the tent canvas would be protected from UV and weather.

How about a sturdy 'carport with metal slanted roof' over the wall tent? Of course, that would be a very tall structure and imagine costs would be quite bit.....snow will slide right off metal roof....

I live on the shores of Lake Huron in Canada - we got a lot of snow. We have a sunroom off the house with the plastic roofing like you have. We never rake it and it's been on there for 20 + years without a problem. It's starting to leak where it was screwed in but otherwise no issues and it's never collapses or even cracked.

Good morning from Calgary. ❤ I love the clip of the tractor where it was completely silent from all the snow. I have a neurological condition (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) that makes it hard for me to be in noisy environments, so my favourite kinds of days here are the ones filled with the stillness and calmness from a fresh blanket of snow. It’s just so incredibly soothing on my nervous system. 🥰

Adore all of the aspects of this land development! Recognizing it's late in construction and perhaps a recognized *phase 2* imagining, but have you considered rotating the footprint of the container array? With the observation of how wind/airflow is behaving with your topography 12:24; a rotational adjustment where one corner splits the wind sheer and then each container gets pulled back at a consistent angle. The thought is to wind buffer the alley between containers, particularly btw bedroom & kitchen. #intuition #nosecondarysciencebackground

Lou Hi! Just wanted to let you know about an unfortunate experience we had with coyotes on our property, particularly because i saw 2 on your trail cam. Our dog went a bit further into the brush than usual and was chased and attacked by a coyote. We are thinking she got into one of the dens and the coyotes were protecting their space. After it attacked her, it continued to bark and howl for a long time until we left for the vets. This was in broad daylight . Saidie is smaller than Freya, but still…. Be careful. We also love our trail cams and the tracks we find ! ❤️

Hi, I live in the wilderness of northern 🇨🇦 and here coyotes will call out dogs (lure them out) and attack them, even if the dogs are bigger. In some cases (our friends who love way down the road) it didn’t end well for their dog. It’s surprising how aggressive coyotes can be. I hope your dog mended well. Ⓜary🌲

Next time turn OFF the traction control in the Toyota ( if that one has that feature). I thnk it may have been in the ON position...I saw the one back tire spinning and the rest were doing nothing. If you turn off the traction control the vehicle will distribute the power and torque evenly to all four wheels and you would not have been stuck. Traction control is good for the highway but no good for getting unstuck. Love the videos and the cheery disposition you folks have!
