No one, and I mean NO ONE, was as good on the guitar. You can keep Jimmi Hendrix, and all the rest. Name anyone, and Maybelle Carter was better.

Back when I still had my Toyota Tacoma 4WD pickup (before July, 2009), I was driving it down the Cabin Creek Road, some 30 miles southeast of Charleston, West Virginia, to meet that wonderful anti-coal activist, Larry Gibson. Playing on my CD was Wildwood Flower, with Maybelle Carter's magnificent guitar playing. Everything came together there-- the sounds of Wildwood flower; the realization that I was in the midst of mid-Appalachia, where so much of this terrific music originated. I simply broke down and wept tears of joy. To see Maybelle perform must have been like watching Ted Williams work his way back fro an 0-2 count; get his pitch; and smash it far out of the park. They were two living legends-- the greatest ever at what they did. Maybelle was beyond simply great. She was a true living legend. Her like will never again be available to us. Thank you

Pure Americana,this coming form a punkocker who admires the stick up for the under privledged and antiestablilshment views of people like John Lennon,Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash. I'd like to compare the dynasty of the Carters to the Jacksons but I cant do that,so I'll just say what the DiMaggio brothers were to baseball and the Richard's to hockey is what the Carters were to Music and not just Country Music.Good stuff Carter 28 !

Punk Rocker here also, Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen, Woody and others standing up for the underprivileged. From it's inception, to me Punk was always the Folk music of our generations, from the "grass roots", for it's simplicity and from the heart of the common people. Bless you Steve, and God bless the Carter family.

I belive it's called a zither? or autoharp? not sure if there is a difference HOWEVER I recall reading or hearing that the standard way of playing the instrument was on your lap. It was I Believe Maybelle Carter that 1st played it vertically, NOW the standard way. Please do not quote me but if you'd like more info I would google zither, and auto harp images and see..I will because IDK the diff.Ive been told they are not as tought to play as they might appear IDK but My mother had a "zither"
@direfranchement3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that Maybelle was the first to play the autoharp vertically since in The Original Carter Family Sara Carter generally played the autoharp and Maybelle played lead guitar. It ultimately was a situation of being able to play the autoharp while standing up as before one needed to sit down to play it.
