Thank you for your support, it certainly takes a lot of time to try to do these, particularly when it's a client's pond you're working on (!) and of course the editing and upload - but it's all worth it if it means there's another important water source for wildlife somewhere and I can share this knowledge with everyone that is considering how they can help nature while, "we" all try to sort out the bigger picture. A small refuge is better than no refuge :) Hope you're doing good where you are - take good care and keep in touch - Joel

In the middle of renovating my wildlife pond using these videos for helpful tips and techniques. My brother and I built ours 25 years ago using Chris Baines's book as inspiration. We made a few mistakes and compounded them when we tried to refresh it about 10 years ago. Now I'm relining it as the drought has given a unique opportunity to do so. Will be incorporating rocks into the well to stop it silting up (that was one error we made) and also to give solidity to the shelves. Luckily most of the hard work (digging a big hole) had already been done. Trying to source suitable stones/boulders and working out how much I need and what size is quite tricky but I'm eyeballing the size of boulders you've used as a rough guide!

I really like this series, thank you. I mice, moles, watervoles and or rats in the garden. You mentioned Herons and Badgers, but I was just wondering if burrowing watervoles or even crayfish will punture the liner? do they ever chew a hole if the pond is in their route?. just wondering found a cryfish last year when I moved in, he made my terrace collapse and I've seen evidence of the other critters I mentioned..no badgers in this part of the Netherlands, really steep water side on our side and natural on the other, I want to make a ramp so birds or others can climb out of the water if needed

Great video in general. Sadly the lack of mentioning capillary action regard to the second load of fleece lining means I now have a pond that won’t stay full. The lining is applied exactly as in this video, which means the soil and material are sucking the water out of the pond. Lesson learned, but I am wondering if you had the same issue with the pond in the video? Any quick fix bar dragging the pond apart would be greatly appreciated?

What recommendations for pond liner do you have? I saw you mentioned butyl rubber but it seems quite expensive, are there any other recommendations you have? Or is butyl truly the best
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt - yes butyl every time, it certainly is worth the extra cost, it's less likely to puncture - although of course I fleece it both sides for longevity and protection against larger birds etc - it's made from recycled rubber and will last many many years - any liner can help of course but it's the cost versus the longevity for this. I hope that helps, I don't have shares in butyl by the way ;) Best wishes, Joel

Hi Jonathan - so glad that this was helpful to you and so pleased that so many more of these habitats are being made for creatures so desperately in need right now :) The fleece does give extra protection of course but ensures that the subsoil does not slip down the liner and can be used to plant directly into, negating the need for baskets etc- I hope that this helps too, and thanks so much for your encouragement and support, it means a lot - there are many more helpful videos re ponds and other habitat on the channel, welcome to the fantastic community we have here - best wishes, Joel

Hi Joel. I am just in the process of digging my new nature pond. It is a rough oval shape of some 6m across at widest point. Any my question. I see a lot of pond builds with a large amount of rock incorporated. I don't want to do that as I am trying to build a more natural pond and also I am trying to save on cost, etc. Are rocks simply needed to shore up steep sides, etc? I have 3 levels currently dug. Are rocks only really required for the deep bit. Many thanks for your videos, they are helping me loads as I build out my pond.
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill - you don't have to use rocks/boulders, most are used for retaining the subsoil and hiding the liner, where the sides are too steep for subsoil to stay in place. I find once ponds get to 5-6m x 3-4m, you can maintain a gradient that doesn't require boulders/rocks for subsoil retention. The boulders and rocks placed in the well also provide refuge for amphibians, particularly toads who like deeper water. Glad the videos have been helpful, do let me know how you get on :) Best wishes, Joel

Hi Joel, we've been watching your videos repeatedly while we plan our own wildlife pond. I wanted to ask you about trimming the liner, you trim yours on the vertical lip while many other tutorials advise having a horizontal overlap. For thr most natural look, your method is preferable but is there any risk of rainwater or small stones getting between the liner and/or underlay? We don't have any subsoil at all so will be using gravel up to the pond edge and then edged with turf and rocks. Any advice would be appreciated. It's quite nervewracking creating our first pond!

Can I leach top-soil to create suitable sub-soil? I was thinking of putting top-soil in a bucket with small holes in the bottom and then pour water in, making a slurry, and let the water seep out. If I keep repeating this then presumably the water-soluble nutrients in the top-soil will leach out and eventually I will end up with suitable pond lining soil. (In my garden I have got top-soil and then clay underneath. I tried lining the pond with the clay, on top of the rubber liner and upper-fleece, but it is taking ages to clear - not sure it ever will!)

I'm currently overhauling my 100 gallon pond, trying to decide on whether I should use a pvc or hdpe liner; the former is more affordable and readily avaliable to me, though I've heard that it cab leech toxins with UV exposure. I'm planning on using the "fleece sandwich" method demonstrated here; would the pvc liner be safe if used in this manner?
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Жыл бұрын
Hi there, there are indeed some PVC "liners" that can be harmful but there are fish-safe varieties, so it's worth checking/researching a little. The EPDM liner that I use in the ponds I create has a much better resistance to UV light, isn't prone to cracking/splitting like the PVC and is made from recycled tyres, with a lifetime guarantee. However, if you are using the sandwich method it will ensure that there is no PVC on "show", and it therefore can't be affected by the UV light if there is fleece on top and of course the layers of excavated subsoil. This also means that it is less likely to be damaged and last a whole lot longer than any liner without fleece/subsoil on top. I hope this helps, but I'm here if you have any other questions - best wishes, Joel

Really interesting, I'm definitely going to employ protecting the butyl with the sub soil trick so cheers for sharing. Question on pumps though, I wanted to create a garden stream (lazy river) so that more habitat can be made and it can be enjoyed where we sit in the garden. In balance what are your views? Is creating more habitat but with some negative affect on the main pond an acceptable trade off? I'm looking to put a filter bag over the pump and bury it in pebbles to prevent things getting sucked in and putting it directly beneath the waterfall (trickle) which won't be the lowest point, as I want to maintain stratification for winter months. The pond is roughly 2.5m*4.5m

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Hi Joel, yes it has been 24 hours now to empty to a level just below the lip of the well. But it may still be draining really slowly I am not sure. It probably dropped another 3 inches last night. I used EPDM rubber pond liner 0.75mm thick with a layer of fleece under and also over the top. I then back filled with top soil and built the well using large rocks. Beach made from Welsh blue slate and one end. I tried to follow your videos and advice from your book as best I could which was a great help and like I said earlier the pond looked great until it drained. The weird thing was I had already filled to a quite high level and left it for two days with no real sign of any water drop before I got around to trimming the fleece and liner and then doing the edges. I really worked hard to keep a good high edge all around so I won’t get edge leak. It was just one place I find it hard to get to to trim on the boundary edge next to a beach hedge where I think I probably stepped on a couple of the big rocks to trim the edges :-(. Perhaps this might have done it. Any guidance greatly appreciated. Thank you again, Simon

Hello Hungary! :) So glad the channel is reaching you there too. Fear not, this is known here as "industrial fleece" so it might be worth a google to see if it is available on line to you - but you can use carpet underlay or even old carpet too, as the fleece isn't seen once the pond is topped with subsoil it doesn't matter as long as it is a sturdy fabric and ensures that the subsoil does not slip down the rubber liner if none is used :) I hope this is helpful to you - I'm here if you need any help - best wishes, Joel

I've got a new allotment and there was a small moulded pond left by the previous tenant. For some reason it was installed in the middle of the path so I had to move it. It had two frogs and frogspawn in it so I had to carefully use a net and buckets to collect them before I dug out the pond and installed it in a new area. It had lots of sludge and twigs that had fallen in so I cleaned most of that out although I didn't empty it completely as I was aware it was the frogs habitat. A small amount of topsoil fell in when I was filling in the hole around it, do you think it will be OK? I could empty it again and refill it but I don't want to keep disturbing the frogs. Next I'll create a rockery around it, plant it up and put some pond plants in it. I hope they will like their new home and now there's much less risk of anyone falling in the pond.

Hi Kate - it's so good to read that you were thinking of the frogs etc before anything else :) The topsoil won't harm them but it will add nutrient to the pond which will encourage algal growth, but don't panic as tadpoles love to feast on this. When it comes to late autumn/winter then I'd recommend removing any life carefully and putting in buckets of the same water. Then refill the pond, ideally with water from a water butt, but after 2 weeks any chlorine (if you're in UK) will dissipate and be fine to return anything into. Saying that, just keep an eye on it for now and don't worry too much :) Keep me updated, best wishes - Joel

Hi Gaz - the second layer of fleece is to protect the liner from the subsoil and UV rays which can cause degradation to the liner in time, and allows plants to placed directly into the soil, rather than using baskets etc, it's not imperative to use the subsoil of course and a pond will work without this additional layer of fleece and subsoil, by simply planting directly into baskets. None of the ponds I have created over the last 16/17 years have needed additional filtration once the plants have established, if you haven't seen it already Gaz, there is a short video here of just a few created over the years and shows the clarity these ponds achieve: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oK1hqpp-us7MiKc.html I hope that's helpful - best wishes, Joel

@@simonawebber hi Simon-the clay in my garden is extremely hard and what constitutes as soil is rocky and not at all fertile. In the end I had to go with a common black underlay and a black pond liner, was ok once I’d worked out the folds and creases and cut to size and weighed down with rocks (I didn’t want any wildlife getting in the folds because although they like nooks and crannies they may become stuck if there was a fold left loose, so I made it taught and hid it with gravel at the bottom) My pond has a central well and although I have all the correct plants in, plus frogbit and the like, I have not attracted a single frog or newt in what must be almost 3 years. I have toads though. Lots and lots of toads and an eternal battle with blanket algae on the surface, even in the winter. My pond is in a shaded area but it persists. All in all as a wildlife project, with the wild meadow behind it that never took root and established, I consider it a complete failure. Not an all what I had envisioned. Had the occasional Robin or Finch come down and a squirrel once but that’s it. Lots of butterflies and bumblebees in the height of summer, so it’s not all bad.

Hi Lindsey - if done correctly and with the subsoil method the fleece is hidden UNDER the liner and then UNDER the subsoil. It comes into contact with nothing else. The subsoil has two uses... protecting the liner further and allowing planting of plants directly into the soil. This negates the use for plastic baskets everywhere if only using liner, and of course weighing it up against fibreglass or even concrete ponds makes this method even better. Best wishes, Joel

Hi Sean, not sure of the size of your garden (or your dog!) of course but if you see this video here you'll see a post/wire system I erected which does deter them and it doesn't interfere with sight of the pond - the extra layer of subsoil really does help in protecting the liner though, not just from the sun's rays - here's the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fb2BprKgyraoYGw.html

Where’re you gonna put water ?

Hi. It goes in once the soil is in and is retained by the liner. I hope that helps 😊

why do you need a liner. I have a big pond here and I could not use a liner because of the amount of water I get in autumn and winter. I like the pond's water's level to get lower in summer to be able to absorb the amount of rain I get in autumn and winter.

why is the volume so low?

Hi, do you mean the water volume/depth of the pond? This is one of the smallest ponds I create for customers and due to the size and needing sloping sides for creatures to get in and out, this determines the depth. I hope this helps and that I've answered your question :) Best wishes, Joel

Never in my life have I seen a small pond filled up with rocks and soil instead of water.

Hope this video helps encourage you to make one - if you wanted to see how these ponds flourish in just a few weeks, here's a few of many that I've created over the years - hope this shows you how beautiful they can be: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oK1hqpp-us7MiKc.html

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Thank you, I have made 3 of my own wildlife ponds but I love water gardening so much that I just like trying to get new ideas or see if there are any new materials out there.
