Music and artists are products of their societies and they either mirror that and reflect the truth or they're propped up like dollies to sell a lifestyle or ideals to the masses. There's this misconception about Grime, the UK and music. I'd start in saying American influences resonate across all corners of globe as an economic and political drive to expand markets and as tool of software power whereby people are manipulated to think and behave in ways that serve corporations and suit power structures. Getting to the crux of it, there's inability to see the UK in a historical sense as a colonial power that spread English language, colonised the Americas and the West Indies, creating cultures that interlinked between cities. Caribbean culture influenced Hip Hop, Jungle, Grime and many genres. The Caribbean communities across the diaspora from Toronto, London, Bristol, Kingston...all share aspects of culture. Although it is seen purely as American, the Americans fail to see how Sound System culture influenced Hip Hop and their culture. Now getting on to Wiley, he was ghetto youth who had a hard life, he sold drugs, was sliced across his face by drug-lords and was all about the life he spoke about, it wasn't an illusion or false reality. East London and Bow where Wiley is from is one of the most socially economically deprived areas in the UK if not Europe, it was the home of the Kray Twins Eastend gangsta who were connected to the Irish and Italian Mafia in US. Not to mention the level racism faced by Wiley's generation in the Eastend where the Nation Front/BNP beat Black and Asian youth. East London has high level gun crime, drug problems, unemployment, and illiteracy, its youth are destitute and have limited prospects, especially with the Caribbean community. Someone like Wiley was inspiration to those young people growing up.

I watched some footage of Wiley in like 1996 and when he did a show with So Solid Jheeze Wiley like 2002 has been active for so long. Respectfully, we don't need to have to force ourselves on Americans. Mainland Europe and as far as Australia have much more in common with us

He's saying people knowing you and fully bussing in the states are two different things. You can take Drake, Meek or Lil Baby for example, if they come over here they're that guy while they're here, you have a lot of our top artists damn near turning into little bro. If our top artists go over to the states, they're just another successful international rapper that's successful at home but they're not necessarily going to rub shoulders with the biggest and best talent there, they're not shutting down cities and having everyone come out. When Meek or Drake for example comes out here, everybody with a name is pulling up and fans are flooding the shows, streets and after parties.

Doom does carry through certain intonation but you have to be dialled in to recognise it. It isn't Slick Rick level,clearly, but "..the grimey limey..." definitely has faint traces of LDN in the voice (and clues in the bars)

I think it’s the same as Wiley said, it’s the accent and lingo barrier. When it’s pop or a multitude of other genres, the English accent is more palatable on a larger scale and when it comes to singing there are different ways of enunciating words that can make it sound more smooth. Problem is with rap is that a lot of it is ingrained within lyricism and punchlines both of which are heavily influenced by regional nuances in language. Even flows are impacted a lot because even in the UK alone you have lots of different regions that typically speak at slightly different speeds, some accents sound lazy others upbeat.

This is exactly correct. The reason being that Black Americans are the most insular Americans. They barely leave their state, let alone their country. Their world exists only in the hood amongst people that look and behave like them and share the same interests. This is partially due to then being marginalized in American society. The only successful Brit that actually sang in a British accent that was embraced by Black Americans was the legendary Sade.

I agree with Wiley in that sense, what it looks like isn't necessarily what it is. As for the management thing, I'll be real, CC's management are crazy, I 100% get this guys point, I think Central is a great talent and carved out his own lane, has avoided most of the bs too when he could've easily gotten dragged into bs but in this scenario, I would say at the very least it's a 50/50 dynamic when it comes to importance, I would even go as far as saying his management are really the driving force. Right now, I'm not sure if there's better, people will never truly understand what they've done unless they're behind the scenes.

Thats rnb though, they're not rapping. Also Estelle was never big in the US. Craig David was but he puts on an American accent when he sings. Ella Mai is another example, huge in the US but sounds 100% American when she sings. Sade is a good example of a global rnb legend, but I'd argue her music is more adult contemporary than urban rnb. She is soulful but also very mainstream. But she definitely doesn't put on an American accent yet is still undeniably legendary in America. UK music outside of rap has always been global since the beatles. We're talking about hip hop here. The Black, urban audience in America only wants to hear American accents and topics. They'll never change.

Skepta is well-respected in the industry period but he isn't really doing numbers there. We still haven't got a Lil Baby or Drake equivalent in the UK. Think of it like this, when Drake, Meek or a Lil Baby comes over to the UK, they can shut everything down, everyone is going to go out to see them, listen to their music etc... no one in the UK is going to any city in the US and having the same effect. They're big over here but when they hit the states, they don't really brush shoulders with any of the bigger name-talent, whereas the top artists in US can come over here and you'll quickly notice a lot of the big talent here damn near look like lil bro.

They'll become those guys while they're here, even someone on a lesser scale, they'll be able to bring out everyone with a name, fans will flood the shows at the biggest venues and pay top price, they'll flood the streets, try to follow them or track them down to after parties, we've seen this with guys like Drake & Meek. On the other hand, our very biggest artists can't go other there and do the same thing, they won't be in the conversation or rub shoulders with the biggest artists there in terms of who's making things move right now. Everyone isn't coming out to see them. We hold US artists on a higher pedestal and embrace them more than we do our own, on the flip side, US fans don't treat our artists the same. Lil Baby can come over here and outsell anyone, strictly in the UK, you'd need Dave, Cench & maybe Tion Wayne combined doing a show to try and convince people to choose that over seeing Lil Baby by himself In the states bring our top 6 biggest rappers, no one is going to choose to see them over even someone like A Boogie.

The same level that Cench is in the UK, once you move him to somewhere like the states, he's no longer that guy not even close. Move Drake from the US to UK and his status and influence is arguably even greater, the competition drops drastically. I'm willing to bet, if you brought Drake over here for a show to do on his own and had another show on the same day where it was Skepta, Dave, Cench, Tion Wayne all doing the same show, Drake still outsells them, people will pick to go and see Drake by himself vs that crazy headline I just picked, take the same guys I mentioned & drop them in the states, you'll need at least another 6+ artists on top to make it competitive because their status drops drastically compared to Drake in the states. The point being someone like Cench is popping but his status is high here and I would argue he's at the top of the game in the UK right now, but once he goes to the states his status drastically falls and he isn't in that conversation with the top guys there.

I'm American and agree. It's no different than when New York dominated hip hop in the 90s and no other states got love until they just ignored New York and made their own sound. You just gotta focus on your own people and others will come.

All of them rapped or sang in American accents though. They're not valid examples. Wiley was talking about blowing up in America with a UK accent and UK sound. Sade is the only valid example of this. She is seen as a legend in America and embraced by Black Americans who are old enough to remember her.

The accents are different but slang and vibe is very similar because of the Jamaican influence in both countries. Notice Drake only started making songs like WAR and mentioned the 6ix until after he had already blown up. His first couple albums sounded like he was from Memphis, in fact he mentions Memphis or Houston more than his own hometown.

As for me it's a place I always wanted to visit, my brother said it was like the good bits of the UK and the US without the shitty bits, which sounded good to me...
