Wilhelm Furtwängler is a musical titan, one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. Some would say he is the greatest of all. A supreme, inimitable interpreter of the Austro-German symphonic repertoire, and of Wagner’s music dramas, he remains a towering point of reference for performers and audiences.
The unparalleled scope of this 55-CD set makes it an essential for the music-lover. Not only is it the first collection to unite Furtwängler’s entire catalogue of studio recordings, it also encompasses every live recording he made with a view to commercial release. Painstaking research has even unearthed a treasury of previously unpublished material, recorded in Vienna and Copenhagen. The highest artistic and technical standards have been applied in curating this set: each recording has been fully and scrupulously remastered in high definition, while the accompanying commentary and documentation, both authoritative and exhaustive, further illuminates Furtwängler’s philosophy and his genius for bringing a score to life with apparent spontaneity.

I've got the great set, and found the project magnificent particularly for the reproduction of tape recordings. Only my regret is that an apparent mis-edit is found at the connecting part between the record sides 1 and 2 of Beethoven's Symphony #4 made in 1950. This mistake should have been occurred on the digital editing process. Another problem is found at 7:17 of the last movement of Schumann's 4th by DG, at which a sound twisting is heard. Except these problems, I am thoroughly satisfied by the great sound than ever, which is highly close to the original. As told in the video, Kaiser Walzer with a slow tempo is an exellent performance specific to Furtwangler and VPO, and it sounds top of the top for the recording age. This is a fantastic bonus for Furtwangler lovers. Thanks a lot!!

I wish Warner would do more of these types of videos for their box sets. Topakian was quite insightful and you can see the exuberance he has for the old material. And he should, for Furtwängler was a master.

Even in the worst possible recording made with the worst possible equipment from the 40s, the Furtwängler sound passes through Vibrant, Alive, Sensational, Outstanding punching u on the face... only Mitropoulos can be compared to his Genius in 20th century

Apparent typographical error @ 3:51: 53 CDs in 192kHz/24bit 10 CDs in 96kHz/24bit (should it read 1 CD?) 1 Documentary CD in 44 kHz/16bit This adds up to 64 CDs, but it is a 55 CD set. According to Warner Japan and Tower Records only one music CD was not newly remastered: --- CD 35 (Beethoven Violin Concerto + Romances, 1953 Philharmonia) is “Remastering 2016 in 96kHz/24-bit from original tapes by Art & Son Studio, Annecy” --- CD 1-34 and 36-54 are “New remastering 2021 in 192kHz/24-bit from original tapes by Art & Son Studio, Annecy” --- CD 55 (the audio documentary) is “Remastering in 44.1kHz/16-bit by Art & Son Studio, Annecy

CD's are always 44.1/16 bits, I believe that the description is about the remastering process.

John, thanks, as ever, for your detailed discographic detective work. From what you say, and from the claims in this video, I take it that the EMI Beethoven and Brahms recordings included here do not use the same remasters that were included in Warner/Parlophone's earlier Furwanger boxes--specifically "Beethoven: The Nine Symphonies" (5 cds, "Remastered ℗ 2010 © 2016 Parlophone Records Ltd...", according to the booklet in that set) and "Brahms: The Symphonies/ Concertos/ Ein Deutsches Requiem" (6 cds, noted in the booklet as "compilation ℗ 2018 & © 2018 Parlophone Records Ltd..."). It strikes me as peculiar that Warner would commission Art & Son to do new remasterings of these recordings for the new megabox when they had already issued these particular recordings not that long ago. On the other hand, I don't see any indication, anywhere in those sets, that Art & Son was responsible for those remasters. (However, the font in the booklets and on the back of the boxes is so minuscule that my ageing eyes may well have overlooked such a notice, if it indeed exists!) ~ Regards, John Drexel

In the clip showing the engineer dubbing from the metal 78 matrices, his tonearm's headshell is full of dust and, most shocking if true, what seems to be a coin or metal disc is glued to the top of the headshell to add weight. I used to tape a penny to my tonearm to prevent skipping over scratches when I owned a cheap record player as a child, but this is too much!

I hope they fix the side joins on Brahms Symphony No 2 with the London Philharmonic, originally recorded by Decca. I don´t know what the heck happends with Decca that ruins all with the worst side join possible, and don´t tell me that they were do with splicing tape, RCA, Columbia, EMI reissues their treasures in the 50s from 78 rpm record and no one made the atrocities commited by Decca.

No offense intended, but SPOILER ALERT: the Toscanini vs. Furtwangler "debate" is a tiresome relic from a century ago. Give it a rest, Gaetano M. Piscopo; that ship sailed a long time ago.

@@kennethdower7425 Toscanini's reputation has diminished considerably in recent decades. Despite still being a figure of cultish veneration for some people, he's not the highly acclaimed figure he used to be. The record labels don't seem to be putting out reissues and even independent labels don't bother with him. RCA, Toscanini's home label, doesn't do much with all his formerly popular catalog. Meanwhile, Furtwangler - formerly a niche figure - has seen his reputation increase dramatically. Lavishly produced, restored, and annotated Furtwangler box sets are now common.

@@TheStockwellvery true. And Furtwangler stuff just keeps appearing, sometimes new stuff or old stuff in considerably better sound which only enhances the listening experience even more.
