Wilhelm Kempff plays 6 Variations on 'Nel cor piu non mi sento' (a duet from the opera "La Molinara" by Giovanni Paisiello, which premiered in 1789), WoO 70, by Beethoven, recorded by Kempff in 1962.

I know that the song called Nel cor piu became very popular among European people in the beginning of 19 century. Although Beethoven usually wrote serious tunes, This seems too lovely and enjoyable tunes for Beethoven. I guess he also loved such a cute song. From Tokyo

Once more Kempff brings me back to my child years in athens,greece when I first heard him play Beethoven's 3rd concerto live... Tears of untold joy & bliss started running down my face as soon as he started playing the beautiful first theme of the 1st movement...What an incredible experience for an aspiring young pianist!!! This IS Music !!! Thank You!!!!

Er entlockt dem Flügel Töne wie nur wenige Andere. Auch wenn man sich vielleicht bei machen Stücken ein bisschen mehr zupackendes Spiel gewünscht hätte. Das ist aber Kritik auf extrem hohen Niveau.

Wunderschöne Interpretation dieser fein komponierten Variationen im gut phrasierten Tempo mit anmutigem doch klar artikuliertem Anschlag und sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Echt unvergleichlicher Pianist!

who would dislike Beethoven? Well, there are no absolutes in musical tastes. However, most people who like classical music gravitate to Beethoven and like his music. A master of the piano, these are delightful pieces that are not technically his most challenging. For finger breaking, you go to the Hammerklavier sonata or the third movement to the Moonlight.

Oh Kempff... I can tell nothing but my envy towards his (grand)daughters & (grand)sons who might have enjoyed a childhood of magical sounds at home... Kempff did not leave us any recording of Scarlatti. But students and friends said he played them too.... How would that be??? How?? With his that exquisite control of tone and light... so...

I remember attending recitals at The Royal Festival Hall in London and we were usually given some Scarlatti as an encore. So far as I know he did not record any Scarlatti. After more than 40 years have passed I still remember those recitals.

1000 thanks David for posting this gem and 1000 to Hannah Tao for her alert to it - she's right, it's beyond flawless, it's in another world, just beyond the stars in meaning and musical intelligence. That left hand at 1.42> and 3.40> - UNBELIEVABLE. Noone else comes near this.

Yeah its the hardest of the lot in my opinion - not it terms of actually playing the notes but in terms of getting the balance of voices in the RH

Yea, that's true. I guess it's supposed to be played very orchestral. Think about the different instruments and try to bind and phrase the higher voicing pretty good. (My english sucks, I hope you get my point.)

I think the theme is too fast. Maybe he could add more expression into it and slow it down. But otherwise, it's nice. :)

Yes. I do think so. This piece is also too noisy. Old and worn out damper? Abusing of damper pedal? The theater is noisy? People are afraid to criticize. You and I are not.
