I'm so taken with Kempff's way with the first movement of this sonata, I almost can't listen to anybody else play it.

Directly to the core of the music, without effectisms. Kempff's identification con the German pianism's soul is unmatched. It is useless to recomend this or that record. Whatever Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann or Brahms (talking about the giants) that Kempff did is great and "true". Many thanks for bring here this video! 👍

It’s remarkable how still Kempff compared to today’s pianists yet his playing is so expressive.

Yes ! A great musicality, lost nowdays by many young pianists that are obsessed by technic performance only

But what a wonder -- sounds like his natural form of expression. I’ve always admired his pure and controlled expressiveness, never ostentatious dare I say almost "tailored" -- the dance rhythms that spring from the Scherzo... oh what wouldn’t I give to be able to release that delicate and sparkling sound from a grand piano!! When I listen to Kempff I feel pervaded by an infinite meekness and an intimate force that is not found elsewhere... in him are united the genius of S and B! This interpretation -- a miracle. For how he delivers musical transitions with such utmost care and respect. His aesthetic coherence is arguably one of the best out there. Few manage to give such unity to Schubert’s sonatas. Beautiful nuancing throughout. Always bringing out new mellow musical flavors, and getting it "right". No way, he speaks piano very gentlemanly and poetically. From him we must learn how to give light to such music. Genius.

Kempff had a career of more than 60 years. In fact, he was still recording and making the occasional public appearance when he was past 80. Only the onset of Parkinsons Disease caused him to retire. He died at his home in Positano aged 95.

Sternstuden der Menschheit. Star Moments of Humanity. When music brings an atmosphere form which it`s made, an unspeakable message that can not be expressed in words; an extract of an essens from an unique moment, something individual and an epoche.
