My god! The quasi-fugue section from the second movement! Beautiful! I admit that I am guilty of underestimating this man's work. What a delightful discovery. Absolutely amazing.

Each listen provides a deeper understanding. The beauty which can be found is worth my time. Wish he had written more symphonies.

A truly great symphony with a memorable Scherzo.

A truly great symphony. I love it more, each time I hear it. The Symphony #2 is just as excellent. I'm going to have to rate those two as soon of my favorites.

An extraterrestrial told me that on his planet Stenhammar's first symphony is generally regarded as the greatest work of art ever created by a human. I said I never even heard of Stenhammar. So this ET fellow takes out a gizmo and plays the symphony for me. I'm listening to it, and after about 10 minutes I say "C'mon, man. You've got to be kidding me. This is our greatest work of art ever?" He took the gizmo away and said "I'm not a man! Idiot! Stenhammar is wasted on you fools." He left, and that was that.

One of my favorite Scandinavian symphonies!

I hear memories of Bruckner, Hans Rott, Brahms and Schumann throughout this. It definitely has some amazingly beautiful patches. I'd have to listen to it enough to know if it is of the caliber of the well known greats, but so far, even in the first movement, I have come across some very memorable passages.

This symphony was rejected by Stennhammar as "too brucknerian". He found a new style leter on. Nevertheless, this symphony is quite intersting to discover, it is powerful and extremely well written. And the posterity kept it as "the first symphony of Stenhammar". Son, thank you for posting this intersting score.

Interesting symphony, supressed by the composer as being not important yet although it might be a bit uneven, containing moments equal to any of the great composers of the late Romantic period. Deserves to be played more often! What a bonus to have the great Svetlanov conducting!

All this mumbling about Bruckner, this isn't a winetasting; " fruity notes and hints of oak". Maybe it's just people that should drink more wine, chill the analysis and just groove to the presentation. I think I'll just do my likes at the beginning, and not read the comments. For you listeners that appreciate this music and its presentation bless you for good taste and kindness. The rest of you should get together and create a society of mutual admiration so as to leave the rest of the civilized world alone. Maybe get a bunch, huge bunch of LEGOs to occupy your hands and mind so you can contain you vitriol through manual activity. This is beautiful music that sounds like the passion and talent of Stehammer put together to treat us to for a short period of sweetness and harmony.

another terrific classical surprise

I owe so much to ALL CLASSICAL music 89.9 FM in Portland, Oregon for introducing to me so much wonderful music that I had never heard. This was one piece I heard around three years ago when COVID was appearing. I just love it for it's sublime moments of tranquility and well as the overall "subtle," for lack of a better word, energy the piece evokes. It reminds me of a magnificent sunrise.

Carl Wilhelm Eugen Stenhammar est un compositeur, pianiste et chef d'orchestre suédois, né le 7 février 1871 à Stockholm et mort le 20 novembre 1927 à Jonsered dans la province historique de Västergötland. Biographie Il commence à apprendre le piano, entre à l'école de musique de Richard Andersson, travaille la théorie avec Joseph Dente et l'orgue avec Heintze et Lagerren. Puis il suit les cours de théorie avec Emil Sjörgren et Andreas Hallén. Après avoir étudié la musique à Stockholm, il part pour Berlin afin de perfectionner sa technique pianistique avec Karl Heinrich Barth (1892-93). Il fait alors des tournées de pianiste. Il fait ses débuts de chef d'orchestre en 1897 en dirigeant son ouverture Excelsior !. Il était dans sa jeunesse un fervent admirateur de la musique allemande, et particulièrement de celle de Richard Wagner et Anton Bruckner. And suddenly it ends like a scherzo from a Bruckner-symphony...the inner movements are the best ones.

Stenhammar died so relatively young (56). All his music is first rate. It is so unfortunate he did not get to compose more symphonies. As consolation there is, however, another great Swedish composer even more underperformed than Stenhammar: Kurt Atterberg. He composed some 9/10 symphonies and much other music, all first rate.

First time i listened to this in decades In some ways I can understand Stenhammar rejecting this symphony as the outer movements are at times a bit too both ponderous and Brucknerian, despite some lovely music. The inner movements have a quite different character - the 2nd has a number of beautiful moments although I (unlike another commentator) find the fugato for instance rather prosaic. For me, the crowning glory of this work is the instantly memorable scherzo and here, unlike in the more generally highly regarded and individual second symphony, this movement is at least on a par and strikes me as having an affinity to Dvorak. Overall, I enjoyed re-acquainting myself with this symphony which deserves the odd outing in the concert hall. Of course there is not a single Swedish symphony in the international repertoire which is pretty scandalous -- from this period, Stenhammar and Alfven's 2nd should certainly be there just for starters.

This is a fantastic recording of Stenhammar's 1st Symphony. But one should be aware that the sound drops out after about 15 minutes in the 1st movement. This lasts about 8 seconds.

The bit at 17.21 is best for me! Cascading string figurations at the climax! Thinking about comparisons to Bruckner, he was cosmic, but this is so warm, homely, hygge

The horn section seems a bit more assured than those on the live recording I have with Jeervi and the Gothenburg. Regrettably the nimble to-and-fro in the woodwind is just as imprecise here as there 5:10. Svetlanov's idea of andante in the second movement is more like lento or adagio. But this is a great romantic work and i can listen happily to any number of performances.

Stenhammar is the greatest swedish composer and "experts" clasified him a stept over Sibelius, Grieg and Nilssen. Don't miss his two piano concertos and his Fantasy i B minor for piano.

I am in agreement with other reviewers here; the fact that Stenhammar felt the symphony was too Bruchnerian does not detract from its positives. Sounding like someone doesn't mean you are someone else. Plaudits to Stenhammar for striving for a distinctive voice but to virtually disown this work is sad.

Sound totally cuts out at around 14:50 for me. Anyone else?

It sure does sound like Bruckner, esp. about 10:00. What is the painting? Looks like the upper section of Niagara Falls, the place that few tourists get to see.

Sound disappears at 14:52 and is back at 15:00.

I hear a lot of Bruckner 7 at around the 30:00 mark. Still, a lovely piece.

I can see why the composer thought this symphony trivial; non of the ideas have a real bite; although it's masterly composed. Thank our lucky stars he wrote his second!

Stenhammer had an abreaction to his own work here, to Stenhammer 2. Does that make this bad? No.

Quite interesting Symphony neglected by the same composer that would have been less brucknerian in the second, in a more scandinavian tune. He seems to be quite on the same level of Alfven as a Symphonist, but his best to me are the Piano concertos, really beautiful. Svetlanov is always a plus.

Stenhammear is a wonderful composer. But too seldom performed in concert halls. It is a great symphony but as he wrote himself: too Anton Bruckner like. He found a more personal path later on.

C’est comme si l’on entrait dans un de ces palaces d’Europe centrale à l’architecture pâtissière style religieuse au chocolat. Dans chaque pièce où l’on pénètre, les individus sont habillés en noir et blanc des pieds à la tête. Ils ont cette étrange absence dans les yeux tout en vous regardant fixement. Les plafonds sont peints, le mobilier d’un luxe indescriptible et le marbre veiné des tables reflète l’évanescente sérénité de l’endroit ! I still keep wondering why Svetlanov was able discover - and record - this magnificent symphony but other are simply unable. Are they all deaf? Must be, I have not other explanation. This is on par with almost all other symphonies on the regular repertoire. Why not this?? With all respect to Mahler or Bruckner but they are, in my humble opinion, quite inferior to this at least as far as understandability and satisfaction is concerned. I return to this time and time again and am sorry for most mainstream concert-goers who can't.
