Pretty cool experiment. The stability analysis of this, tells me that you are at the lower limits, around 1.1 SG, and your true BC is lowered by maybe 10-15%. It doesn't matter much :), yes you will loose a bit of energy downrange, compared to a 6.8 Western. But will definitely get more punch than the typical 140-150gr. So even with that little 10-15% reduction, you are still extending the known ethical range for the 270wsm. Nice video!

I remember seeing data from doppler radar tests from Bryan Litz (on Long Distance Hunting Forum, maybe?) that showed a slight increase in BC from a 10 twist barrel vs a faster twist one. Litz had seen this before on bullets that were wobbling slightly during flight from marginal stabilization. It is fine as long as the accuracy is good enough, just the windage and drop will be slightly greater.

@@hopefulballistics Hornady covered twist rates in a very recent broadcast. They mention the fact that accuracy problems from bullet imperfections get worse with faster twist rate, which is why benchrest shooters tend to runs slow twist rates. The more pertinent part is that a bullet spun very close to its stability limit may produce good accuracy but wobble enough to increase drag. That is what is sometimes seen with long ogived, heavy for caliber bullets. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eJp3gtuFxp-4dHk.html

Very exciting to see this work! I reload 6.8 SPC, 270 Win and now 6.8 Western (browning hells canyon). I recently pulled some factory 6.8 Western cartridges apart- 162 grain copper impacts and 170 grain PowerPoints in order to develop some 175 grain Sierra gameking loads. Anybody out there you could point me to with 1:10 twist 270 Win who had success using these 162s, 170s, or 175s ? Another question anybody out there find success in subsonic 6.8SPC (1:11 twist) using heavier rounds 130-175 grains?

Did you say what powder? If so I missed it. If you have it, try H1000, Retumbo, StaBALL 6.5, and possibly LRT. If you are testing max for your chamber I recommend increasing by 0.5 gr until very first indication of pressure. If you're more conservative on testing you can go by 0.3gr increments. Find max in your chamber, then test a 3 shot group 1 gr under up to 0.2 grains FROM max. Many rifles best nodes coupled with best speeds are somewhere around a grain under max give or take about 0.4 gr

@jimedick9496
@jimedick9496 6 ай бұрын
It’s not going to smoke the 6.8 Western. The 6.8 is using the same casing as the WSM. They shortened it slightly, and it’s using a steep shoulder angle to help with clearing the long BC projectiles of a 170-175 grain .277. We are talking about 100’/sec, at the very most. That’s not going to “smoke” the Western. Not even close. The biggest difference is, the 7.5 or 8 twist rate barrels of the Western. It’s guaranteed to stabilize those heavy for caliber bullets even at long distances. In the video, the target is at close range, where there’s still plenty of speed, so that 10 twist rate barrel is keeping it stable. But what happens 200 yards down field and your velocity really starts to drop? My guess is that you’ll start seeing it wobble, which will only hurt its down range velocity even more. There’s a reason why the engineers made the twist rate a minimum of 8 for the barrel on the Western. It’s designed to stabilize those long and heavy bullets at long range, even when the velocity drops below 1000’/sec.

@@bradleytyrrell4417 Yes, that does work. You’re still looking at minimal gains. There’s a little more capacity, but it’s not that much. Not enough to “smoke” the 6.8 Western, but it will send that pill out the barrel a little faster. Either way, you’re still modifying your 270WSM into a 6.8 Western. @@hopefulballistics Where I'll be shooting to test (and possibly hunt) is a bit over 1000 feet ASL. I don't expect to have the $ to buy the reloading gear this year, so I'm going to try out the Nosler Trophy Grade AB 270WSM rounds this year - I might buy three or four boxes, which will give me 80 brass when I'm done with those - and I have another 7.5 boxes of brass that I saved from my Federal Premium Nosler BT, for a total of 230 brass. I can then buy a box of 100 of the 140gr AB, and another 100 of the 165gr ABLR. Things are so much more expensive here these days... A box of Nosler Trophy Grade 140gr 270WSM AB at Cabela's is $150, plus taxes... I found a place that sells for less, but shipping is expensive... Anyway, short of winning a lottery, I won't be doing the reload testing with 165 grain ABLR, but it does look very promising. I'll have to remember to mark the bottom of the case with the bullet type, whether or not it is LR, since they both have the same tip. The Barnes LRX are also interesting, but they aren't even available here. But I have to come back to these 165 gr ABLR - I guess they made them because some newer 270 rifles will have 1/8 ? That's still promising for me, since their site says it requires 1/9 and I have 1/9.5 ..... I have xpr I love it especially for the price they also give you generous room in the magazine to seat the bullets out farther at least in the short mags versions I have noticed one thing I've played with seating depth and bullet speed and it hasn't changed my group much it shoots 3/4 in at 100 yd with Barnes bullets so I just left it at published overall length and shoot them as fast as I can safely

130-150 is the sweet spot for 270 WSM. Yes, you can go heavier, and you can go lower. However, my rule of thumb is, if I need heavier I step up to the next caliber, (.28) rather than try to wring out more accuracy and velocity outside the data the gun, bullet, and powder manufacturers recommend for safe and effective handloads.

I don’t think it works like that. Once it stabilizes, it’s stable until the end. With some extreme exceptions.

👂NOW LISTEN CLOSELY AND SEE WHY I WENT AWAY FROM THE BIG 30'S AND BACK TO THE 270 CALIBER! Austin, shooting his BIG 300 Weatherby Magnum, according to the Nosler Manual can get 3,362 ft/s with Nosler's Best 308 150 grain bullet (B.C. of 0.469)! So, using 80.0 grains of IMR 4350, at 600 yards, he gets: Bullet Drop = -46.7", Bullet Drift = -17.2", Bullet Velocity = 2,414 ft/s, Energy = 1,941 ft lbs, Recoil (7.5 lb rifle) = 28.73 ft lbs! You, using the 270 wsm and 68.0 grains of Magpro and a Muzzle Velocity of 3,193 ft/s, with the 150 grain Nosler ABLR bullet (B.C. of 0.591) at 600 yards get: Bullet Drop = -48.8", Bullet Drift = -14.1", Bullet Velocity = 2,452 ft/s, Bullet Energy = 2,002 ft lbs, Recoil = 23.83 ft lbs! So, Austin is Enduring 17% MORE RECOIL to get 2.1" LESS DROP AT 600 YARDS (Which means you would have to be able to shoot better than 1/16" groups at 100 yards, to see any difference), 2.9" MORE WIND DRIFT, and 61 ft lbs of LESS IMPACT ENERGY! PLUS, THE FARTHER YOU GO OUT, THE MORE YOUR BULLET WILL PULL AHEAD! HIS MAGNUM IS HARDLY WORTH THE EXTRA 17% OF ADDITIONAL RECOIL AND 12 EXTRA GRAINS OF POWDER, IS IT? 🤪 (NMN)

Haha we both know that if I actually loaded up a 150 gr bullet in my 300 Weatherby it wouldn't be going 3362 FPS. I'm getting that with a 180 gr bullet Ron! I could easily get over 3550 FPS and wouldn't be surprised to see it go over 3600 FPS. Also what happened to you throwing a fit when I compared a 130 gr bullet in 30-06 vs a 270 Win 130 gr. Now you're doing it for the 270 WSM. How about we do the math with a 190 gr ABLR in the 300 WBY? I'll even put it at a modest velocity for my 300 WBY... 3200 FPS. At 600 yards they have the exact same drop, but the 300 WBY has 500 more ft.lbs of energy.

💁‍♂️ I am not disagreeing that as you go up in bullet weights that the 300 Weatherby Magnum will push them faster - But, At What Cost in Addition Recoil and Powder? I'll take 23 ft lbs of Recoil and a Few More Inches of Drop Than Close to 40 ft lbs of Recoil Out of the 300 Weatherby and Those Heavier Bullets! "FOR EVERY ACTION, THEIR IS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION!" SINCE THEIR ARE "NO FREE LUNCHES", IF THE 270 CALIBER CAN KILL THEM AT THE RANGES EITHER YOU OR I ARE SHOOTING AT, THEN YOU CAN "ENJOY ALL THAT EXTRA RECOIL"! 🤕 NO THANKS, I WILL HAPPILY PASS! 🤭 It is like having a car that goes 200 mph, when the speed limit is 65 mph - It just Isn't "Very Practical", Especially For North American Big Game in the Lower 48 States! 🤷‍♂️

🕵️‍♂️ Oh, and I got those numbers out of the Reloading Manual (Not that they are hard and fast numbers), but I didn't just make them up! I used "documented and verifiable information", to make the comparison! 👨‍🏫 I was being totally subjective and honest! 😇

👼 Austin, "On My Fathers Grave" (🤚), I Can Promise You That If You Are Limiting Your Shots to 400 Yards (As You Say - Or Even 500 Yards, With The Right Load) Then Their Is Absolutely No Horned/Antlered Species Of Animal In North America That You Can't Kill With Either The 30-06 Springfield or 270 Winchester! The Reason Why I Prefer The 270 Winchester is "Less Recoil" (Yet Again)! If You Want All The Extra Recoil Of That Magnum Though, Then Knock Yourself Out! 🤕 Besides, Didn't I Hear You Say (On Video) That The 270 Winchester Was A "TACK DRIVER" At 775 Yards (Damn Near 1/2 Mile)? 🤭 What Else Do You Really Need Austin??? 😂 Be Honest With Yourself Austin! 🤥
