Will Alien Romulus Serve A Queen or Egg Metamorphosis to represent the Xenomorph's life cycle? I try to answer my own question but fail miserably as I fall deeper into yet another rabbit hole becoming lost in my thoughts. Will you save me from my madness in the comments section or am I destined to simply wait until August 16th ;)

The key factor in explaiing the life cycle of the xenomorph was best captured by Ash in Alien. "It's a survivor" or "perfect organism". This could explain that the creature has multiple ways to regenerate/replicate itself no matter what the environment. The cocoon sequence in the extended version of Alien is just another method the creature can use which is just as effective as the development of a queen. Who's to say that those are the xenomorph's only methods to ensure its survival. I still hold to the theory that the space jockey/engineers created a biomechanical weapon that is programmed to survive/adapt to any environment or situation. A weapon so effective even they couldn't control it.

This is my thought exactly. If there's a queen, there's a queen. If not, a lone Alien could egg-morph whoever was available. If there is a queen in this film (and for some reason I don't think there will be), I'm not sure what they could do with it, past another final battle. What do you do with a queen?

The way I interpret the Xenomorph growth can boil down to 1 factor. Has a queen developed or hasn't it? If not, the Xenomorph initially grows bigger like big chap, with a tougher exoskeleton, as it developes into a praetorian, then lastly into a queen. However, at any point, it may depend on eggmorphing to ensure its species survives if it happens to die - this being a response mechanism to the hostility it may encounter. This same survival instinct then gives the queen the ability to plant a special egg, containing a Royal Facehugegr, if it sees its chances of survival are at risk. If a queen is developed, all newly birthed Xenomorphs will grow as a warrior, being smaller, quicker, and utilising their altered exoskeleton to blend seamlessly into the hive, and potentially secrete far more resin for hive growth and reinforcement. It's also here that any Xenomorphs that grew alongside that to the queen xeno prior to reaching queenhood, will have their growth stunted, due to the pheromones released by the activation of a Queen - locking them in their Drone or Praetorian state. In addition, for quadruped xenomorphs (runners), the same sequence applies with runner variation. A lone (drone) runner will grow into a crusher, then into a queen. But could eggmorph at any point if it sees its chances of survival are at risk. And a runner birthed in the presence of a Queen grows into a Prowler (warrior equivalent).
@ENTERTAINtheDUDE
@ENTERTAINtheDUDE Ай бұрын
That's a great analysis and I love the idea of all the species being connected via signal and response activation through pheromones and so forth. We think of these things as individual units sometimes but if they can affect each if so radically based on information about environment and food source, then it's more logical that what you say is correct. It ties things up nicely without the lazy writing aspect that sometimes happens

I prefer the queen conceptually. But I don't need one in the film if they are reverse engineering a lot of stuff genetically. I think the introduction of it makes the concept of a hive and multiple aliens make a lot more sense in terms of biology and ecology. There is no point in a hive unless you have something like the queen and its eggs to protect, otherwise the drone Aliens would be out their lone wolfing and competing with each other for the resources to replicate. A much more even fight if the marines go through the complex taken them out one by one, instead of them all rallying around a toasted newborn in the hive. The sheer size of the queen also gives a great escalation to the final confrontation of an action movie. Its a great contrast of Ripley protecting newt as a mother figure, and the queen protecting her eggs. You lose a lot of that if regular aliens just make people into eggs. I think it was the right call for Aliens 100%. I can see both existing though. As a biologist, I like the concept of a kind of "emergency" mode when the standard method is unavailable due to environmental factors. Its not unheard of for even creatures on earth to do extraordinary things to propagate their species. Such as changing their gender when the local population has too much of the same gender to reproduce. However, it is a little clunky and unexplained. I would imagine a more specialized type of alien would be the one to activate the metamorphasis to begin with. The standard alien also having that capability feels like it bloats their role somewhat and its hard to imagine they also have what is chemically needed to change any life form they have never encountered before into an carbon copy egg with an on brand facehugger inside, when the theme of the aliens reproduction after Aliens seems to have become "its mixes somewhat with the host DNA and creates something specific from the combination". But that has similar problems for people who don't like the queen to begin with. In addition, it would seem horribly inefficient to change all that biomass into one egg. If a species had that biological ability of changing other species into something totally different, it likely would take a scatter shot approach of birthing a litter to give the best odds at least one survives. A human body could potentially be metamorpised into an incubator for several baby aliens the size of the ones we see in the movies as they gestate in the stomach. "The perfect organism" shouldn't really have a lot of pointless steps to reproduce or be inefficient in terms of propagating itself. What if there is just one host? You metamorph it, and then, the egg has nothing to open for? End of the line. It should function as something that gets the species out of that situation, not checkmates it. Its a little too underdeveloped as a concept to be a satisfying answer to me. But if this movie could improve on that and flesh it out I would be open to that. But again, if these are all just lab grown etc they don't even need to address it.

Great read, thanks for your input. Always interesting to hear from people in the science community on these fascinating but fictional creatures. As a biologist, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how these large Xenos can sustain themselves for long periods of time as it's always baffled me how little they seem to eat and also how much fluids they lose every time they drool or secrete. I know it's all fantasy but these creatures were inspired by living things on Earth after all. I also believe in this vast universe we live in, I think any biologist would explode with delight and confusion if we could one day observe life on unlimited planets. I truly believe and you'll maybe roll your eyes at me for saying this... But anything we can imagine, has the potential to be a reality. Thanks again for the insights. I'll be making some videos soon trying to explain the aliens features and functions based on real science on earth. I'm gonna do loads of research and try to get things right, but I expect harsh criticism none the less 😉😉
@R0B1NG5
@R0B1NG5 Ай бұрын
@@ENTERTAINtheDUDE Yeah it is fun to consider some kind of basis for scifi creatures to really function. Most people would say its just hollywood logic and they can do whatever the plot requires. Because its a good point, they are large creatures and very active/agile. You would imagine that is burning a huge amount of energy. Particularly when you add in the fact they don't "eat" a lot of what they hunt if they are dragging them back to eggs (or even turning them into eggs) a lot of the time from what we see in the movies. But if you wanted to be charitable and find some way to start the explanation for it, I think looking at some of the original ideas about its biology is pretty helpful. I think Ridley Scott or Gieger had the idea for the first movie that the alien lifecycle is extremely short lived and that it is also sort of degrading in this process. The reason the chestburster is white and the adult alien is black was to visually imply a sort of bruising over time or like observing a banana become over ripe. In that context, its a fun thought experiment to extrapolate that the aliens biology forgoes any of that boring stuff that gives species like us longevity and stability. And instead focuses on "designing" something that is more disposable. That burns out, not fades away. Perhaps slowly consuming its self from the inside with its metabolism, like the stomach of a starving mammal. A highly impactful hunter and warrior for an intense but short amount of time, protecting and expanding the hive. Running on its equivalent of adrenalin. Taking a pistol shot or two and not even realizing it or experiencing the effect of it until much later, if it lives that long. The overall ethos not being concerned with the quality of life of the being after the point it has served its purpose. You could also imagine one of its "organs" is simply a sac of metabolic fuel, its food in a sense. And it doesn't actually need to eat anything in its environment. Its like rocket fuel, it just speeds through its growth and development and performs incredible feats of speed, power and agility with it. Fueling other organs or glands to produce substances like enough highly caustic acid to fill up its frame and also a possibly complex substance in potentially large amounts that allows it to "build" hives. But once its used up the alien must enter a semi dormant state, or perhaps just die. There is some kind of phrase to get the idea across succinctly I can't think of, like a front loaded lifecycle or an "overclocked" lifeform. Its that kind of idea. You are pushing the engines so hard they damage themselves and can't be used again to that degree. I suppose one problem with this is that sequels and other media have significantly ignored this aspect of the alien and it appears to be canonically more durable and long lived than that now. They do keep the convenient factors, like fast growth to adulthood, probably for script pacing purposes. But the rest of it doesn't seem to be that well known or accepted. Its just a badass killing machine to most people. That decaying, transient aspect sort of hurts that branding. But I think it fits a little better with the biology of the standard alien for a more grounded take on it. And I don't believe the major film entries of the franchise have timeframes that would directly contradict a fairly short lifecycle. And just to say I don't have any of the companion books of lore or comicbooks/dvd bonus content/webseries/whatever that may go into detail on stuff like this, so I'm sorry if they already explained it somewhere and definitively contradict everything I said. I mostly just watch and rewatch Alien and Aliens. These are just my guesses.

I've always thought (since reading the book 40 years ago and then watching the directors cut of ALIEN) that an alien has the ability to create an egg in which it would hatch a queen. Chest bursters would never be a queen unless the egg made by an alien created it that way. A queen would be created once there were a few aliens to protect her. In an environment such as Hadleys Hope where there would be plenty of hosts.Then she would start laying eggs. So I think the Alien species has the ability to create eggs to then create a queen.

I personally think that the director's cut life cycle in Alien was more horrifying than the queen. I had wondered if Prometheus was going to reconcile the two methods of reproduction as being from different strains or alterations of the alien. I also thought, as others have suggested, that the cocoon metamorphosis could simply be an emergency method of reproduction if a situation arises where there is no queen, possibly with a high health cost to the non-queen alien creating the cocoons. I like to think both is better. A lone drone can implant a variant of the black goo, which begins growing within a host like a cancer that consumes them. It isn't just converting them, it's breaking them down to build something new. I don't know if every egg spawned in this way would produce a queen, but a drone can probably prepare any egg to produce a royal facehugger, like the one from Alien 3. It's similar to how worker bees can prepare one of their larvae to develop into a new queen. If the converted eggs are destroyed or something, I like to think one drone will continue to mature into a queen if she isn't present and releasing pheromones to prevent that. This process just potentially kickstarts a hive before a drone can mature enough to become a queen. In some parts of the expanded universe, the eggs seem to withstand the ravages of time better than the violent organisms they produce. Maybe it makes more sense for lone drones to prioritize egg production over host retrieval to ensure the hive's survival in the long term.

Regarding Alien Isolation: "The development team confirmed that a Queen was responsible, but stated that showing her would not have fit with the game's focus on the first film in the series, and would also have led players to expect a boss-type battle with her, which went against the game's less action-oriented style." So we know ovo-morphing is a thing, and queens are a thing and even drones morphing into queens might be a thing if we go by the alien storyline in AVP 2010. We might not see one in the movie for the same reason it's not in the game. What kinda badass would it take to survive an infested station and put down a queen with 0 prior encounters or relevant skills. By contrast Ripley had some understanding of the creature, several kills under her belt, was florklift certified, and was running on angry mom fuel when she bested the queen. There's a risk that a queen encounter might detract from the movie. Or maybe not. I look forward to seeing what will go down...aside from the entire station.

Alien isolation does have a queen. You can hear her cries on the station. She had a very distinct cry when communicating with her brood. It was also confirmed by the Devs that she was there. They didn't put her in, in the end, due to losing the feel the game was aiming for. All through the game, you're hiding from the xeno. You have no way to kill it. Putting a queen in, it would kill the mood of the survival game. The team said a boss battle wasn't in line with their vision, given that you couldn't even kill a warrior cast in the game. It is there. You just don't see her, sadly. I much prefer the Queens life cycle. The cacoon stages of the life cycle are in most of the games. So this is how they normally change. They even do this to change into Queens. I feel the eggmorphing theory isn't technically cannon due to being cut from the film. But Scott is working on this, I believe, and he isn't a fan of the queen. So it wouldn't surprise me he bypasses it, Queens life cycle in itself.. is very interesting. Including the praetorian class and the "pure breed" ideals. Hence, the praetorian face hugger is seen in the extended version of 3. I find the egg morphing lazy and boring. I believe big chap is in this, but has been petrified in the meteor picked up you see in the trailer. Its likely dead.. but preserved. I believe these are "lab grown" xeno... why they look a bit different. So they may not need a queen. 3 .. they wanted to queen to experiment... alien 4 ... Same thing. Hence no actual eggs seen. How they managed this though im not sure given facehuggers... and full xenos are different creatures. How they get one from the other is odd... unles big chap morphed in to an egg himself while in space, essentially preserving its self in space. Bit out there but you never know.

And the space jocks being humanesc creatures in suits? Everything the first built upon was totally thrown out the window in those films and I'm a bit stubborn and don't even consider them cannon. Refuse to believe a creature that iconic got reduced to a pet project for a synth.. it's sad seeing it that far down. The comics on the space jockeys is far more interesting. That and the "suit" in Alien wasn't a suit. Kane makes a point of it being organic and the bone being bent outwards. Scott made a mess tbh of the franchise with his own ego, I'm really really hoping he didn't have too much of a say in this film. It will just end up a mess. I have been thinking about it a long time! I suppose there could be certain conditions that have to be met in order for a queen to get born and develop, and if not met, "life will find a way" to replicate itself. It is the perfect organism, after all. It's also pretty clear that Scott has been much more involved than Cameron, and generally has a ton of sway on this franchise (recently to its detriment imo), and I doubt he'd be pleased to see a queen, so my money is on egg metamorphosis. Maybe we'll see a queen in the next instalment, depending on whether Scott is still alive at the time (he's getting up there), but I'm not sure I really need to see it, as it will be borderline impossible to match the final battle of Aliens, it was too perfect!

I always liked the eggmorphing lifecycle more. It's more alien, more "non-earth-ish". It made the Alien way more crotesque and fearsome, if it morphed living beings into eggs who then brought up the facehugger who then started anew. No "Queen-Hugger" or such funsies. Totally negating that "beehive" and way to earthlike stuff the second movie brought up (good movie but it made the Alien WAY to tame, giving it that ant/bee-hive style hirarchy every human knows and is fond of). Why couldn't both be included? I don't see the two modes of reproduction as antagonistic but complementary, Egg morphing can be used to initiate an infestation, but it is very inefficient requiring two hosts for every single xenomorph created. With the Queen she is vulnerable, but has a the ability to increase the xenomorphs number exponentially by laying eggs. I can see both being useful to a "Perfect organism." A lone egg infests a host in a new environment, the xenomorph hatches, grows to adulthood and captures a few hosts to convert into eggs, maybe one queen egg and a couple regular eggs develop. The adult xeno guards the nest and acquires fresh hosts until the Queen hatches and matures, then she starts laying and the hive numbers skyrocket. This would actually mirror some real species that employ two different forms of reproduction in their life cycle.

@@ENTERTAINtheDUDE it’s a lot of little things. What David does with the goo in covenant takes the struggle against the Xenomorph, which is one of the most masterfully done examples of Man vs. The Unknown and retcons it into a half baked example of Man vs. Man’s Creation. The alien’s no longer a foreign entity, it’s essentially a manmade problem. Beyond that there’s the fact that the Xenomorph is frankly far less dangerous than the black goo itself. It really steals the Xenomorphs thunder. It also takes all the little nagging thoughts that challenge our belief that the Xenomorph is _actually_ the perfect organism and brings them into focus by contrasting it with a far more powerful, but far less interesting, weapon. It’s just everything bad that could possibly happen to you concentrated into a liquid. The goo is what you get when you take all the really specific, strange and alien details of the Xenomorph that Geiger brought to the table and strip them away in favor of just maximizing lethality. It fundamentally misunderstands a key aspect of what makes good body horror: unsettling specificity. Body horror _isn’t_ about a foreign agent malevolently trying to destroy you as gruesomely and painfully as possible. Its instead about a foreign agent earnestly trying its best to achieve something special with your body. It’s perversely specific. Think not of a praying mantis dismembering devouring another bug in gruesome detail, think instead of Leucochloridium paradoxum, the parasitic flatworm that invades the eyestalks of a snail and pulsates with color and shapes remesecent of a caterpillar to get a bird to eat the snail so it can continue its complex lifecycle inside the bird’s digestive tract.

Would it be possible to synthesize both ideas together? Where a lone adult alien is able to use egg morphing to make eggs for queen facehuggers. This way any adult alien can start a whole hive, but it's more complex than simply becoming a queen.

I will wait till you review this movie when it comes out. I prefer the queen laying eggs to this thing using human hosts as turning the body into the egg unless the big chap is a female xeno. What am I saying. This makes no sense How can this black goo create life form abominations and what BS can they come up with to explain in alien Romulus if that happens or doesn't happen leaving audience guessing guessing? For those who love both Aliens, Predators and AvP comics & games, start petition and pressure & force Disney-Fox to release and show us AvP anime series hidden in their vault. The ovimorph idea was abandoned due to test audience reactions. It was later canonized that the aliens had a queen. Like bees, a drone or warrior xenomorph can gorge itself and pupate into a queen in the absence of an egg layer. The scene with Bret and Dallas could simply be a larder for the xeno to gorge itself for pupating. In the book Alien, specifically the one released in 79 not the reprint which is light on content, the chest buster manages to eat the crew's food stores and the lights on C deck were out because it chewed all the silicon casings off the conduits... which is how it molted. It is my opinion this is the better of the solutions as if ovimorphs were the way to make an egg where did the derelict ship find so many humans to turn into those eggs? If they eggs were made from Engineers, they would be much larger. They had a scene in Alien where the camera pans behind the equipment on the Shuttle after Ripley has expelled the Big Chap and hunkered down for a long hypersleep... the camera focuses on an egg behind that equipment... where did it come from... test audiences did not like that. So Ripley survived and we were treated to the sequel Aliens... which is one of the best sequels made imho.

@@ENTERTAINtheDUDE Yes the VHS was brilliant marketing but the millennials over at GIZMODO had to start making phone calls to find a VCR as the last one ran off a Japanese assembly line exactly eight years ago this month. Is this the same DISNEY that utterly destroyed INDIANA JONES and STAR WARS and dragged Harrison Ford through feminist mud last year? The Auld Lang Syne nostalgia is running deep between this and LONGLEGS. In its own way, ALIEN ROMULUS is the third ALIEN movie we never got to see as Sigourney Weaver killed it as producer of ALIEN 3. She trashed William Gibson's superb script (ALIENS on steroids set on a space station whereby ALIENS form out of black goo left on Bishop's severed torso), banned guns, and had Bishop, Hicks, and Newt instantly terminated, and demanded the franchise end with her Christ-like sacrifice (Lord...). The space station Gibson set the story on was inhabited by communists (Cold War still, remember!) and featured piles of xenos but in his second draft he scaled it down to just 3, which sounds very much like this movie. Battling commins and xenomorphs in space, it doesn't get more 80s. Details here: avp.fandom.com/wiki/Alien_III_(William_Gibson)#Second_Draft

In what possible universe and in what possible society do these probably less than average intelligence bunch of kids (i'm only guessing at some of them doing really dumb things for plot convenience, like using a cattle prod to poke at an Alien egg), get access to all this space stuff, let alone the android, without adult supervision, overview or help. And by adult i mean an elder with decades of experience in whatever world or outerworld they inhabit. Is there going to be some back story, some credible back story, a realistic one, that allows for this Lord of the Flies-esq situation that has a series of events that lead to this horror, or is it going to be treated like the adroid is just like having the latest phone, space vehicles are just going to be like cars, and these kids were just, you know, being rebellious kids and stuff, like in our world, but set in the future, and in space , like a bunch of kids robbing bank, or being vampires or something in some cliched hollywood dross. I'm not impressed so far.
