Come, let me tell you of my favorite historians of all time - Will and Ariel Durant. Their books were once mandatory to any proper history collection, and even now are unmatched in worldly content. No textbook or "world historian" has ever come close to their monumental achievement.

William James "Will" Durant (/dəˈrænt/; November 5, 1885 - November 7, 1981) was an American writer, historian, and philosopher. He is best known for The Story of Civilization, 11 volumes written in collaboration with his wife, Ariel Durant, and published between 1935 and 1975. He was earlier noted for The Story of Philosophy (1926), described as "a groundbreaking work that helped to popularize philosophy".[1]
He conceived of philosophy as total perspective or seeing things sub specie totius, a phrase inspired by Spinoza's sub specie aeternitatis.[2] He sought to unify and humanize the great body of historical knowledge, which had grown voluminous and become fragmented into esoteric specialties, and to vitalize it for contemporary application.[3]
The Durants were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 1968 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.
The Story of Civilization, by husband and wife Will and Ariel Durant, is an eleven-volume set of books covering Western history for the general reader. The volumes sold well for many years, and sets of them were frequently offered by book clubs. An unabridged audiobook production of all eleven volumes was produced by Books On Tape Inc. and was read by Alexander Adams (aka Grover Gardner).
The series was written over a span of more than four decades. It totals four million words across nearly 10,000 pages, but is incomplete. In the first volume (Our Oriental Heritage, which covers the history of the East through 1933), Will Durant stated that he wanted to include the history of the West through the early 20th century. However, the series ends with The Age of Napoleon because the Durants both died - she in her 80s and he in his 90s - before they could complete additional volumes.
The first six volumes of The Story of Civilization are credited to Will Durant alone, with Ariel recognized only in the Acknowledgements. Beginning with The Age of Reason Begins, Ariel is credited as a co-author.
The series won a Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 1968 with the 10th volume in the series, "Rousseau and Revolution."
In the preface to the first volume, Durant states his intention to make the series in 5 volumes, although this would not turn out to be the case.

I had the privilege of meeting and interviewing the Durants when I was in high school as part of an assignment. Being invited into their home to speak with them for an hour was an unforgettable experience. So sad they've been largely ignored more recently--they had (and have) so much of value to say.

Thank you for remembering Will & Ariel. Will Durant's "Story of Philosophy" which I read as a teenager fascinated me and caused me to want to study that discipline. Will Durant was a Franco-American, a descendant of French-Canadians who crossed the border into New England (and other states) mostly in the 1865-1930 period. Next year, I am publishing a history of this criminally neglected episode in the industrial and immigration history of the U.S. Like Durant I am someone with a background in philosophy who is writing history. I am planning to emulate Will's & Ariel's careful documentation of sources. Thanks again for calling attention to these important figures in the literary and intellectual history of the 20th century.

“Civilization is a stream with banks. The stream is sometimes filled with blood from people killing, stealing, shouting and doing things historians usually record; while on the banks, unnoticed, people build homes, make love, raise children, sing songs, write poetry and even whittle statues. The story of civilization is the story of what happened on the banks. Historians are pessimists because they ignore the banks of the river.” - Will and Ariel Durant

In addition to providing context and perspective, the Durant's had an entertaining writing style. They avoided needless jargon and had no obvious need to prove how smart they were--unlike much you see in today's history books. A few years ago I read a book about the middle ages written by a British author in the 1930s. The writing reeked of prejudice against Islamic culture. In contrast Durant saw beauty in every culture he wrote about. I read the entire series in my twenties and thirties. Now in my 70's, I need to read the books again.

My freshman year in college, I took a course on Pop Culture and American History, which was taught by a philosophy professor who for some reason included The Story of Philosophy in the required reading. Not only did I read SOP, but about a decade later I discovered The Age of Napoleon while working in a library. There are some dated aspects to their writing, but I think they're a great introduction to European history. I thought Caesar and Christ was fantastic, and the series was mostly really good from there.

Will Durant married Ariel when she was 15 yo. She was also his pupil. By modern standards she's a victim of a vicious crime (child marriage) and is scarred for life. However, apparently, they had a perfectly fine and happy marriage and she became one of the best historians in the West alongside her husband.

+Socrates yeah, i found that part pretty gross. Worked out obviously, but not a good beginning
@ThatSocratesguy
@ThatSocratesguy 6 жыл бұрын
Actually my point was that this new sentiment that if a person under 18 marries an adult, it cannot be but a vicious crime and rape is way off. There isn't any huge difference physically or mentally between a 15 yo and a 18 yo. Moreover people tend to think that this only happened in Eastern countries, and that the adults in these cases are deranged and crazy individuals. But here is such a good counter example: One of the best Western writers of the past centuries marries a 15yo girl and they have a great and productive marriage. No such thing as rape, trauma, nothing. Yet if this happened today, Will Durant would have been shamed, beaten, thrown in jail, forever branded as a vicious pedophile and rapist, never been taken serious as a historian anymore etc. Which is ridiculous. This is discrepancy is something people have to ponder over.
@CynicalHistorian

+Socrates I don't disagree. But if we look at my recent episode on Chaplin, you'll see how it was already considered kind of wrong by the 1910s. Chaplin was hounded for statutory rape of this same kind. The power dynamics there are similar, given Chaplin's employer employee relationships with his wives. Then again, only one of those marriages lasted. So maybe not a good comparison. Either way, not a good begging, but definitely a good end for the Durants

Great video. I recently found a first edition of his "Philosophy and the Social Problem", which as far as I know was his doctoral thesis, subsequently published. One of the things I love about this man (and later, his wife) is his astounding prose, and I was expecting something a little less polished perhaps in that initial book. I was dead wrong. He was writing like that from the very beginning. Let no one be put off by the sheer length of the Story of Civilization. It's a goldmine.

They pretty much covered it all... Having the entire framework of human civilisation in one place has been more convenient than I can explain. I'm about to pick up the last volume. And when I'm finished I will read them all again. Every dark spot in my knowledge of history has been illuminated, and other paths of enquiry opened (i.e. Candide, Zadig & Micromegas by Voltaire - just to name a few), which has slowed my progress through The Story but bothers me not at all as I have literally savoured the entire collection. Quality and brevity has not been sacrificed to quantity. Though some details of events are skimmed over, The Story of Civilisation is the best holistic approach to history I've ever seen. It's all there... and if you can read through it all, and remember it, then you will pretty much know it all. It has also been very cleverly written to make it thoroughly entertaining. You will also have the scaffolding to go on to research any period of history in scholarly detail. Our Oriental Heritage is my favourite. But The Age of Enlightenment, Age of Voltaire and Age of Louis XIV are in my opinion the best written (of the ten I've read so far). Having said that though, I will skip none when I read them again. They are all singular and exceptional masterpieces of knowledge!

I think the dust jackets were ripped at the same places too! Running through your vids now. Keep up the great work! ⭐️ As far as what makes a “true” historian, the same accusation was always thrown at my favorite, French historian Henri Guillemin, because his degrees were in literature and literary history. It’s a typical fallacy, especially when a historian challenges the official (usually conservative) narrative. Guillemin was especially (in)famous in France for telling the truth about Napoleon. His being a christian socialist didn’t help either. (Geographer from Montreal here.)

She was 101 when she passed back in early nineties when I was very young. I really haven't read a lot of varied stuff lately. I love how you mentioned the old school definition of the Orient being from North Africa to Japan. I must be one of the few people in the world who uses the old fashioned British term of "Western Oriental" for "brown skin" people from North Africa across to India ("Yellow skin" people in the more easterly parts of Asia being "Eastern Oriental"). I know that this might be seen as politically incorrect, but is a perspective that many share; just there is no contemporary term in use except the imperfect "Middle-Eastern".

If only all those specialists were nearly as good at writing as the Durants were; maybe then we really could forget about them. They come up with about one amazing quote per page, and I see some here are quoting some of those quotes, which are almost aphorisms. Apart from the writing being literature, it's quite remarkable how accurate the series is; almost none of it has been rendered completely obsolete because of new discoveries, and after they hit the Renaissance era, I'd say NONE of it is obsolete: they basically knew what we know now when it comes to history post-1400. Remarkable lives. That "Story of Philosophy" you're holding up pretty much put Simon and Schuster on the map, and that partnership lasted till "Age of Napoleon".

Thanks for sharing this... I was looking for a book series that as you said, try to unfold a huge a amount of time instead of just a little piece. Reading John Von Neumann biography, found this Quoting the biography of John Von Neumann: "Max (John's father) had always been a voracious consumer of books. An opportunity arose during his business to purchase an entire library from an estate of a family named König. The Mr. König concerned had gone blind. The library’s centerpiece was the **forty-four volumes of a universal history -** [Allgemeine Geschichte - by Wilhelm Oncken](de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allgemeine_Geschichte_in_Einzeldarstellungen), a German historian of renown."

Naw, it's perfectly natural. Such marriages were the norm for most of human history. We live in very sanctimonious times. Feminism and Secular Yankee Puritanism are trying to domesticate humanity and neuter the collective Ubermensch in order to create a race of soulless automatons who will act out an idealized rockwellian nightmare on earth. Have they psychologically neutered you young man? Be honest.

It might've been the norm for much of history, but even in the early 20th century, sleeping with your students was considered a horrendous ethical failing. They worked out, obviously, but lets not pretend that finding that sleazy is some new thing. Remember, I'm a teacher too, but I'd denounce the heck out of one of my colleagues if I found them sleeping with students

They were discounted at the time as ‘book club historians’ by academia. Reference library? They are seriously dated. A good read? Yes, but they are not “comprehensive.” Their children sold all of their research at a yard sale after they died!

Exactly Yuval Harari .. doesnt even reach the ankles of Will Durant .. he bring a vastly oversimplified version than Durant and he is nowhere the literary genius that Durant was.

The Zinn 'Peoples' History of the United States' apostles will never read this! I have and I love it especially for perspective-pre politically correct analysis.

I'm reading my first (and probably last) Durant. The Lessons Of History. He is giving perspective from an elitist's point of view. Total shite so far.
