Genocide was first coined to describe the Ottoman Turks against the Armenians during WWI. Didn't come into common use until the holocaust, but it did exist and its use isn't a historical inaccuracy.

Have you ever done a dedicated episode about Apollo 13, or was that just something you brought up in your old 5 good historical movies video? Because I’d love to see a more in depth video about that movie

The vagueness of the term lost cause is what draws people in. The succession itself was a lost cause because of the manufacturing and food growing disbursement. Growing food was decentralized to the extent that the South didn't have a food advantage. Manufacturing was overwhelmingly Northern, so the South was at an arms disadvantage. If it wasn't for the greater marksmanship and strategy the South would have been crushed quickly. This part of it being a lost cause militarily pairs well with the American tendency to side with the underdog. As for slavery being the cause of the succession, it was just the most recent on a list of reason for people to want to succeed. Each representative voting to succeed had his own reason for doing so. Flip any of those groups and the likelihood of succession would have dropped. They probably could have prevented the war by subsidizing agricultural exports instead of taxing them. That would have kept slavery around for much longer, so we might be better off for having had the war.

I think the reason Burns is presented as a Private Eye is because (based on what I have read) he is being used mostly as a stand-in for the various Private Investigators that the Osage hired to try to help them and I guess Burns was just the name that stuck out regarding the history of early 20th century PIs even if he was not involved in this instance.

I agree that Killers of the Flower Moon was a great film, but I think it failed to explain a couple of key points that I only understood because I had read the book. The film didn’t explain how head rights worked in particular how they could only be inherited and not bought and sold. It also failed to explain how guardianship worked and why, for example, Molly had a guardian as she was obviously competent.

Of course, it’s also interesting to note that A LOT of the laws that perpetuate systematic racism are also ableist. Regan’s defunding of public mental health services criminalized mental illness, tying voting rights to IDs adds another layer of restrictions to people who often can’t drive, defunding welfare defunds programs like Medicare and other programs built to assist disabled people, and let’s not get into all the accessibility and medical problems! Also, I think you make an interesting point on how many people don’t realize that legal racism is within living memory. I have a great aunt who vividly remembers only being allowed to swim in the public pool once a month because they only let hispanics in right before they cleaned it. She was VERY involved with the Chicano movement and spent most of her career working in bilingual education. California’s current “English Only” education policy completely dismantled the DECADES she spent trying to equalize education and hurts both Spanish speaking and english speaking students!

The part about anachronisms is something i liked that was touched upon. I liked it because you consicely explained why it was important rather than being pedantic like a lot of buffs i know personally. While some of the vocabulary might be out of place, it helps to not only allow for the modern Osage to speak through the movie, it also helps to drive home just how dire things were for the Osage and Indigenous people in general.

Thanks. Far too many people think doing good history is merely about accuracy, but history is a narrative that historians construct. We need to realize that to progress as a society

As a historical film it was good. As a film though, dear god; it just went on and on and on at that glacial pace of turgid exposition upon exposition upon self indulgent directorial hubris….. It got to the point that by the time it ended I no longer cared how it ended, just that ended. For cryin out loud, the radio drama epilogue WAS 8 MINUTES LONG! All of which is a disservice to a horrific story that needs to be told and ppl need to know but many don’t because the film was made in a way that discouraged ppl from seeing it.

I know that it'd come with it's own issues, but if Microsoft had their own ivideo sharing platform with more benefits for creators, *especially* the ones combatting bigotry and misinformation, Google would absolutely lose it's continence. The only reason I think Microsoft should take the stand is because literally every other video sharing platform that isn't KZfaq has a HUGE problem with bigots and conspiracy theorists setting up shop there, and their moderation isn't equipped to handle it. Meanwhile, KZfaq pays lip service to the misinformation crisis, but pockets the ad revenue from sites like Gaia and places that deliberately pedal drivel about giants, pyramids, aliens, ETC.

I've long suspected that KZfaqs management was right wing, what with the blatant double standard for right wing content (in promotion and moderation) and excessive moderation on certain topics in comments, but yikes I did not expect a more or less cold hard confirmation. And yet they still try to hide behind their so called "commitments".
