Alyssa views are usually not aligned with mine but i like that she is well informed and dont just say something. She usually has her facts or information to back it up. I still wont agree with her position because of my beliefs and how i was grown but it is good to have intelligent arguments. You learn from those.

If TFG would have listened to Dr Fauci, the stricter policies wouldn’t have happened. Decisions were left to individual states, businesses, and groups when it should have been a public health matter where the advice was centralized and we should have all worked together. It’s sad that it couldn’t have been handled better by a president who knew how to lead and could listen to experts.

Someone please tell Alyssa that Kemp is not the Savior of the Republican party. I'm a native Georgian. I brought my daughter up here. She has since moved to a midwestern state, and I'm very thankful. She's in her late 20s, and she couldn't make a living down here. She moved up north, and she has her own apartment, health insurance, and has generally become much more independent. Kemp is a clever politician, I'll give him that. He spent most of his time as Secretary of State purging voter rolls (some of which was reversed by the courts, after the 2018 election), in preparation for his run for Governor. He didn't back Trump's Big Lie, but he used it to pass some really onerous voter suppression laws, in the name of "ballot security." He proposed, the the General Assembly pushed through, a "permit-less carry" law. These laws don't make us any safer, they just make it harder to keep guns out of the hands of folks who shouldn't have them. Under his leadership and with his urging, Georgia's General Assembly has passed laws against allowing transgender kids to get appropriate gender-affirming care (which flies in the face of all the "parents rights" drivel the right-wing is constantly spewing), and made it impossible for transgender kids to play sports on the team that most closely aligns with their gender identity. He pushed the Board of Regents to hire Sonny Perdue, fresh off his time in Trump's Cabinet, (and the cousin of Kemp's gubernatorial rival, David Perdue), as the Chancellor of the state's university system. Perdue is completely unqualified for such a post, and students are wondering if their degrees will be worthless under Perdue's tenure. Kemp proposed and the General Assembly pushed through, a so-called "heart-beat" anti-abortion law. The exceptions are vague and onerous for both patient and doctor. He pushed for this even though Georgia's maternal mortality rate has been the nation's highest for almost two decades. This time period would align, by the way, with the beginning of the Republican takeover of state government in 2003, when the aforementioned Sonny Perdue first became governor. Under Kemp, the maternal mortality rate, especially for Black women, has gotten worse every year. Kemp, like every Republican governor we've had, has stubbornly and foolishly refused to expand Medicaid. His half-measure, for which he is trying to get Biden administration approval, would cover only a fraction of the folks who would otherwise be qualified. Kemp has pushed through, and the General Assembly has approved, educational standards that forbid discussion of "divisive" topics in the disciplines of social studies and sex education. How can you teach any topic with honesty and integrity and not talk about divisive concepts that might make folks uncomfortable? Of course, the folks who can't be made uncomfortable are white. No one asked black kids if the white washing of our country's history of slavery and racial oppression makes them uncomfortable. Under Kemp (and of course Perdue's) leadership, teacher training programs in Georgia's universities are having to remove all reference to minorities, diversity, equity, etc., in their standards for new teachers. Kemp is clever, as I said. He takes away a lot, then sometimes he gives a little to buy some good will. He pushed the General Assembly to restore our Hope Scholarship awards to cover 100% of tuition for all recipients, after about a decade of the Scholarship having a two-tiered award system (Google it for more info). New mothers on Medicaid can now stay on the program for up to a year. They can apply for welfare while they are pregnant and begin receiving benefits. However, Georgia is still one of 6 states that allow pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control on religious or moral grounds. Georgia has 159 counties. 78 of those counties have no OB-GYNs. 15 counties have only 1 OB-GYN. We have 118 rural counties, and of those 54 have no hospital. 63 counties have no pediatrician. 9 counties have no doctor at all. 7 rural hospitals have closed in the last 10 years. Kemp was governor for 5 of those years. He has done nothing to reverse that trend. There are more green-engineering jobs coming to Georgia, but that is more due to the Inflation Reduction Act than Kemp's policies. Kemp speaks against the IRA and tries to undermine it's standards for federal grants and tax breaks. That's counterproductive in myriad ways, but Kemp never lets logic get in the way of ideology. Let me paint a picture for Alyssa and all the lovely ladies on The View. If you live in Georgia, and you are a person with a uterus in your child-bearing years, you may not be able to get birth control if your pharmacist (and there may only be one in your county), feels that birth control is sinful, or that you are sinful for wanting it (especially if you are single). When you get pregnant, if you don't already have insurance, you should be able to get Medicaid, so that's a plus. But if you live in one of the 78 counties with no OB-GYNs, or one of 15, that have only one, or one of the 9 that have no doctor at all, good luck getting prenatal care. Best pray you have an easy, healthy pregnancy with no complications. You are living in the state where you are most likely to die either in childbirth or in the first year of pregnancy. If you survive, I hope you are able to get a job within your child's first year (a crucial year for both mother and child), and it better be one with health insurance, since after that baby turns a year old, your time on Medicaid is done. If you have insurance of any sort, hope you don't live in one of the 63 counties with no pediatrician. Having a pediatrician is critical to making sure your child is hitting appropriate developmental milestones, and getting their vaccinations on schedule. If you have a difficult pregnancy, a miscarriage, or a non viable pregnancy, then it will be extremely difficult to access care, even though the laws around abortion have "exceptions" that are so vaguely written that your doctor may be afraid to even tell you what would be appropriate care. Remember, you live in the most dangerous state in country in which to be pregnant. If you are Black, you are even more likely to die. If you are pregnant as a result of rape, you will have to file a police report to be approved for an abortion. This means you will be subject to invasive questions and an even more invasive exam (to get evidence of the crime from your body), after you have already been traumatized. This all takes time, which of course is of the essence if you want to obtain an abortion. I could go on and on, clearly. When I was growing up, and for a good part of my daughter's childhood, Georgia was a great place to bring up a child and build a life. Progress for women, minorities of any kind and especially Black folks or the LGBTQ community has eroded over the past 20 years. Kemp has made that trend worse in every way. It is much harder to be a woman, a mother, a child, a minority or marginalized person of any kind, in Georgia. It is less safe in Georgia, and no, that's not just reflective of urban areas. For myriad reasons, it is much safer for my child to live in a midwestern state. Do you have any idea how sad that makes me? Yet it's the truth. I'm still in Georgia, because I take care of my elderly, medically fragile mother, When she's gone, I'll probably leave Georgia, unless the Democrats can make some gains on both the state and federal level that make staying here worthwhile. Alyssa, please do the country a favor and stop talking up Kemp.
