Personally I see the royal selection less as a plot line that Tappei is focused on telling a story about and more as a reflection of how he sees Japanese politics. I don't see that comparison often in Re Zero circles but I think that's mostly because its not a topic that the English readers are going to be very familiar with. I just like studying geopolitics. And Re Zero! Of course I'm going to mix the two, don't be silly! Disclaimer: I am not Japanese, just a fan of studying history and geopolitics. I am sorry if I got anything real life wrong. Also, I'm not here for the fight about authorial intent and allegory, I say this is just what is familiar to Tappei and what he sees in the world and that gets reflected in his art. Lastly, this ballooned. Sorry for the length. Japan has a pretty similar history to Lagunica. WWII is very comparable to the Demihuman War, as an extremely racially driven war that was quickly ended by overwhelming power (the atomic bomb and the sword saint). Japan has been in an economic depression for the last 30 years, causing a lot of economic problems to put it mildly and a huge class divide as seen in Lagunica. The elite and owners of Japanese businesses make enormous sums of money overseas, and very little of that makes it back to the Japanese people since Japan is so heavy on exports. They are also struggling with an enormous, very strength driven, almost warmongering neighbor who is constantly causing border skirmishes: China. And Japan has had a long standing alliance with an overwhelmingly powerful mythical 'beast' as Emperor Hirohito is claimed to have said, the United States. For the royal selection I see each candidate as related to political groups or issues of Japan. Crush is clearly the traditionalist militarists who want to break away from alliances and bring back a strong Japan, by way of things like leaving America's orbit or abolishing article 9 (the no military article of the constitution, i.e. the self-defense force. its a very complex topic and a central political issue for Japan). Also Wilhelm is definitely inspired by WWII veterans that would have been alive in Tappei's youth who were literally taught from birth that they were nothing but a weapon for the emperor. Death before surrender. Imperial Japan was a seriously messed up place. It's also disconcerting how much political power the ex-imperial government kept after WWII, and how they have been able to influence Japan into the modern day. I like Crush as a character and feel bad for her, but I REALLY like Tappei smacking down the militarists and just subtly roasting them for most of the series. Attack first, ask questions later? I wish you wouldn't do that, ordering them to run me over when I'm not doing anything... Priscilla strikes me as a candidate who backs the traditional elite and conservatives who basically believe in the status quo and trickle down economics. She will succeed which will make her followers succeed. Modern Japan was basically born during the era of Reaganomics in the 80's, and deeply influenced by American business culture of the time. They were to the US in the 80's as China is today in a lot of ways. That said I find her both the hardest get a read on in universe and to map to a real life issue or ideology. I'd almost be tempted to say she's a populist. It seemed like the description of her in the beginning of the video was going that way without ever getting there. Anastasia is a business mogul like the giants of Sony, or more aptly I think, Samsung and the almost Corporatocracy of Korea. I find it fascinating too that a lot of the Japanese and Korean corporations were actually 'American Dream', bootstrap operations started by cobblers and farmers in the post WWII rebuild, like the video mentioned in her section. I also wonder if there is anything to the whole 'Kararagi has slaves' mapping to the idea of corporate slaves and the issues with overworking that Japan has. She also could be read as a foreign investor Japan gets a lot of foreign investors and businesses that set up from places like the US since its pretty stable compared to other options. Their primary motivator is basically just greed, but they often can do a lot of good for the population, at the cost of basically selling the country by way of debt which can cause A LOT of bad in the long run if its not managed extremely carefully. Felt seems like the more radical liberal groups who lobby for home front change like kick starting the Japanese economy, solving energy and education problems, working on the Lost Generation (a huge demographic of hikikomori from the economic crash in the 90's.) and unemployment. Emilia is an odd one. I don't think there is really much to actually judge her on and I have crossed fingers she figures out a political platform, but I kind of see two real world ideas that she parallels. First, she almost conjures the ideal image of the Self-Defense Force (as I understand it; i.e. pretty surface level.). Japan is basically not allowed to have a military because of WWII, but there's a loophole that lets them keep armed forces solely to defend their sovereign territory. Like I mentioned, it is a huge political issue in Japan, as they have to worry about Chinese incursions in the south and Russian incursions in the north over islands that Japan has contested ownership of with both nations. The US generally back Japan over the territorial issues to maintain a control and a military presence in shipping lanes in the pacific, which is like one of the single busiest areas of shipping world wide, so not only is it advantageous for Japan to control them but the US kind of pressures them into it. Emilia sometimes is like an ideal defense force - both unstoppable in combat prowess, but also innately good and showing deep care for the commonfolk and not generally warmongery. I also think there is something to be said about Tappei's views when Emilia is very battle oriented as a character (not to mention pro-intervention), but in a United Nations peacekeeping force sort of way, as opposed to the isolationist Crush. The second issue, and a much more overt one, that she calls forward in my mind is that Japan is deeply xenophobic and racist. They have a reputation for being very open with other nationalities as ideas, but very othering when it comes to actually living in Japan. They alienate both foreigners and minority groups, like the Okinawans and Ainu. Both are indigenous groups but have been marginalized and hated for most of Japans history. There are many reasons the US has such a military presence on Okinawa, and some are probably racist. Only the Yamato ethnic group (the people everyone just call Japanese) has ever been considered 'Japanese.' Japan is so bad about it that is wasn't until 2019 that they even admitted they had more than one ethnic group that ever lived on the Japanese island, and they STILL insist that they have only ever been one ethnic group as a nation. So Emilia is interesting in that she CAN be a character who can critique Japanese society. I'm still not certain if I think she does that well or not. That all said, I think that the video was a very well reasoned examination of the Royal Selection and I agree with pretty much all of it. I think adding in additional ways to examine that setting is fun and important to get a deeper reading of the story if that's what your into.

I wonder how the events of Arc 8 will affect Priscilla's standings in the royal selection.

I am kinda suprised that no one is talking about how this will probably end by Emilia being voted and her asking all the other canidates to rule with her. That seems like the perfect idealistic ending to put on a grand story like this. But I do legitimately think that the best outcome would be if everyone ruled together in some form instead of just one of the canidates, since all of them have shown extreme competence and unique strengthsin terms of ruling (except Emilia), which would mean the best of all worlds. Emilia being the selection winner and then ruling with the help of the other four would also kinda fit with Emilias thing of always having people help her out.

I think you're misunderstanding two very important things regarding arcs 7 and 8. 1) The emilia and Priscilla camps involvement in Vollachia's civil war will be kept a secret to avoid a major diplomatic incident. 2) Vincent formally requesting assistance from emilia will be viewed as him acknowledging her as an equal and the reward for helping to stop the great disaster will probably be improving diplomatic relations between the two nations if Emilia becomes queen which will give her a huge boost in the royal selection. Emilia is probably the worst candidate from practical standpoint. She doesn't think for herself, is naive, hated by larger public and don't have concrete plan how to convince people to vote for her. Maybe it is just the way how Tappei want to write Emilia, but for now I think Anastasia is the best one. She is clever, know how people work, has many achievements for her name and is not psychotic (unlike other candidates) Also there is issue that witchcult is targeting Emilia, so she is not ideal king. To be clear, I think that Anastasia would be best candidate based on my likings, not that she has biggest chances of becoming king. I just find her to be the most sensible.
