Electric vehicles are generally efficient and eco-friendly, and all but a few models aren't exactly known for high performance. Will the oncoming EV revolution deal a blow to car enthusiasts?

I don't have a problem with EV cars themselves. I do have a problem with government pushing (mostly forcing) manufacturers into it. And it bothers me a lot. We should be free to choose between petrol and electric, apparently it won't happen within the next decades

The manufacturers want EV too. In the long run its way cheaper to design and build a vehicle with less parts and only one moving part in the motor. Higher profit margin once the tech is the norm.

I think one of the concerns of people in car culture resides heavily in autonomy and that they DO believe EVs and autonomy go hand in hand. My friend who is a mechanic/car enthusiast envisions a future where not only are petroleum fueled cars are outlawed, but so is the option to drive your own car as a measure to reduce vehicle related accidents. It might be farfetched but I think a lot of people who oppose EVs share the same sentiments.

The worst thing is that i see politicians hinting to that happening here in Norway. And knowing how they run things, it's not really that far-fetched either. It was really entertaining watching him line up against loud Mustangs and Chargers modified specifically for drag racing and silently blow their doors off time and time again. I'm sure we'll see a substantial performance aftermarket crop up in due time as these cars become more ubiquitous and begin to displace their petroleum fueled counterparts.

The problem with EV's is that you really aren't cutting back on emissions and carbon footprints. Sure the cars them self's might not be putting out any CO2, but what about charging them? The more EV's we have on the road, the harder power plants like nuclear, geothermal and petroleum have to work to be able to provide the electricity needed to charge all these cars creating more CO2 thus offsetting the lack of exhaust gas from the car itself. Sure there are plants like hydro, solar, and wind but there is a reason they aren't the only types of plants used. They aren't all that efficient.

This is a common misconception. Most people will charge their ev's at night. You can specify what time to start chargingyour ev after plugging in. After a certain time at night power is cheaper as there is so much surplus power available. Power plants never shut down.

I think before EV's can really take over as people's daily driver they need to solve a handful of things (which hopefully will come with time, and soon) : Costs are still high, most working class people I know buy cars around the $10,000 to $25,000 CAD price, while EV"s and hybrids are still kind of pricy, around the 30 to 40K price tag. Obviously range is another issue as some people travel long distances, especially in parts of the USA and Canada where commutes might be over 50-60 km, and family and friends sometimes are 100-200 km away. Another thing is charging stations and availability. While they're starting to pop up in some places around here, they're still far and few inbetween around the GTA and even still, they take at least some time to charge cars. Also, most people don't have access to the higher voltage power required for a fast charger to do their job quickly. Most people in Canada are stuck with 120 and 240 volt (split phase) mains power. Its prohibively expensive to get connected to high voltage if the power companies even offer that as a option in your area. Lastly, batteries not only need to improve in range but also need to become lighter and smaller if they're to compete with gasoline powered transport vehicles like buses and trucks. Buses aren't too bad as the batteries can be placed under the floor and passengers aren't super heavy (unless its America lol), but trucks on the other hand have strict axel loading laws that means that any extra space weight that your power source and power storage takes up the less cargo you can haul and thus less profit per trip. I'm sure with time these things will be solved, but for now I think those are some major issues holding back major adoption of fully electric vehicles (be they Fuel cell or battery powered). Most Canadians I've talked with around me dont like the short range of EV's at the moment (which can be a bad idea in the cold winter months if you where to run out of battery power in the middle of no where)

I'm a car guy through and through. There will always be a mix. I agree with most of your points. I would gladly buy a well built EV that is practical, and hopefully fun, but I'm not selling my 1970 Dodge Dart, nor my 2006 Dodge Charger Daytona. As to the serviceability, repairability, and modability, those things are being heavily forced out by all manufacturers both EV and ICE (Internal Combustion Engine). The thing that scares me the most is that fewer and fewer people are interested in these things that we rely on everyday. Automobiles should NEVER become as unimportant as a washing machine, and peoples ability to use and operate them is not a right, nor should it be dummied down to the lowest common denominator. This is the reason we have so many accidents and congestion on road ways. I really believe that people need to understand thier cars better and rules of the road need to be better taught and enforced. Especially the left lane is for passing rules. In climates like our, Winter tires make a HUGE difference, and the value of having them for your vehicle should be taught and learned by all drivers. If our fellow motorists would just wake up most days, car culture would be more popular. I really feel the reasons it's dwindling (and it certainly is) has less to do with EV's and more to do with manufacturers pushing out boring, throw away vehicles in order for them to create a system where the vast majority of vehicles have a useful shelf life, and then become outdated. This used to be done mostly with new styling changes. Now it's done by adding too much tech into the vehicle, and stitching it into the car so tightly that it can't be reasonably upgraded.

Oh, I love your topics and insights :) So for me, being an enthusiast, I'm actually in between. I find EVs are great. They are quiet, don't smell, and better for the overall quality of air in your city. I actually really like the Nissan Leaf and I would get one, however I drive a lot and with the current technology, EVs are not there for me yet. Also, I'd be happy if 90% of the cars on the roads were EV. It would be much more quiet and smell less. That being said though, the main issues I have with them is 3 things when it comes to being enthusiast vehicles . 1. They don;'t feel raw and you feel disconnected while driving. 2. You can't have a manual transmission. 3. There isn't really any independent mechanics yet. So, for me, in the future my garage would be something like a EV for daily and a Subaru WRX STI as the fun weekend car ^__^ ~

Extra long comment: This topic is important when it comes to alternative energy, the limited fossil fuels, and the climate change situation. Once we can get the electric grid to run on alternative energy instead of coal, the energy for the transportation sector that was primarily from fossil fuels is going to add energy demand on the grid and this requires considering the energy requirements of society today and the energy requirements of society that is run entirely on alternative energy. Knowing the orders of magnitude for any units is important to know the scale of energy needed to run the US and the energy needs of the whole world. We have more info about the US, by a government agency called the EIA which is the energy information agency. They let you download their database and you can calculate for each kind of energy how much we are using and for what purposes and all the $ amounts. Those are statistics and not related to a single individual in any way so this is to assure you that they are not spying on the American public. The current total world energy consumption is about 6*10^20 Joules. This is about 2*10^14 kilowatt hours. This number in kilowatt hours is 100 trillion. The US consumes about 1/6th of that amount at about 17 trillion kilowatt hours. That is energy consumed in one year. Unfortunately the electric grid will not support this kind of energy consumption right away. But the fossil fuels are running out and need more kinds of energy and storage for that energy since the sun does not shine at night but you are going to run things at night and need energy and transportation units are very small compared to the sun that shines on them so they need batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen fuel cells are the least researched energy storage and can become like a battery when combining the electrolysis of water and the fuel cells in a single unit that would only need to be "charged" like a battery. For those who can't afford the price of a large battery, a smaller battery and hydrogen fuel cells for the longer trips would be good just like the toyota mirai concept car. Last, when it comes the electric vehicles, infrastructure to manufacture them at lower cost is important. By saying infrastructure, this does not mean just the charging stations, those are the least important parts of the infrastructure, you can charge at home for the time being and there are also many places where you can charge your car. But the thing is about places like the Tesla gigafactory and how the shipping to and from the facility happens and what do they ship, what materials do they use and trace those all the way back to the source. This is the kind of thinking we need to push alternative energy forward. Then for the delivery from the source to the factory and from factory to consumer, there are technologies such as electric trains and Tesla semi trucks, but the huge bulk of long distance shipping happens by plane and large ship, and those things can benefit from the higher energy density of hydrogen fuel cells and that hydrogen is low weight perfect for aircraft. Hydrogen technology is the least researched so far. But the other alternative energy technologies are not even close to where they should be. I wish that we don't need like a WWII scenario to be able to get the push we need toward alternative energy even with the current president. The primary alternative energy and storage technologies are this % compared to where I expect them to be to support the future including the entire population poor and rich alike: Solar is at about 2% of where it should be right now. Battery is also about 2% of where it should be right now. Wind is about 4% of where it should be right now, but due to backlash against it, this brings wind back to the 2.5% mark. The backlash against wind is due to issues happening with alternative energy. Then there is hydrogen fuel cells at 0.1% of where that research should be. Also that outsourcing to china is dirtying the alternative energy by producing them in that kind of cheap that I would say it makes it bad and of course the companies who dirty the alternative energy. This also includes that African slavery that is happening that needs to stop happening especially at certain sources such as Cobalt mining. It starts by looking at the periodic table and finding where are the sources for those elements and to get only pure ore to the US or the country that needs to make the product and refine under conditions that favor worker safety, good pay, eliminate slavery completely worldwide, and refining that ore in house to the final product and ensuring a market for the other parts. Another energy source being researched is nuclear fusion which is at 0.0001% research state right now. Biofuels is another needed transition energy source that is at about 3% in its research state. The effort needed to convert the world to alternative energy is enormous, but we need to move forward into a bright future, we need less war and more moving toward alternative energy otherwise we lose a good fraction of the human species. A war for money and fossil fuels is the worst that can happen on a worldwide scale. Trump is a double edged sword to me, he is trying to please the American people which is important, but climate change denial and laying down the seeds to start wars is a problem the problem with the southern border of the US is going to become a war on money since the only reason we can't let the good people in is money and the risk of bad people mixing in with those with good intentions, but there are suspicious issues such as those people carrying the flag for their country to the point where the American public feel like an invasion is happening.

1 there is note much you can change on an electric car, on a combustion engine it comes down to so many factors that performance is variable 2 electric cars are quick on initial acceleration but do not have the torque as you go up in speeds or the towing factor. 3 they are very expensive and the enviromental cost for battery production is worse than a combustion engine 4 the range and repairability of an electric car when you stuck in the middle of nowhere is IMPOSSIBLE!

People still appreciate the past. People still listen to vinyl records after they were made obsolete by digital recording. People still buy mechanical watches even when quartz watches proved to be more accurate. The same will happen with classic cars that have soul and character compared to an electric car that is more like an appliance and does not need tinkering. People still light candles when electric lights are more efficient. What is more romantic than a candlelight dinner? Schools still teach arithmetic and handwriting when it is more efficient to use a calculator and to type with a computer than to personally write a letter by hand with a fountain pen that is said to be obsolete. People still go to a classic restaurant with waitresses and waiters instead of fast food efficiency of ordering with an app and having it delivered. People still go to malls and brick and mortar stores to see and touch items and talk to a human instead of order everything online and have it shipped. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Antique stores are not just novelties they our a piece of our human cultural history.

What is really cool about brushless DC motors is that you can (in software: Field Oriented Control) actually _change_ the performance characteristics in the motor, like the throttle response, torque-RPM curve, etc. You can actually simulate the characteristics of an engine! It's just modeling the engine's performance with a transfer function and using that mathematical model and incorporating it into the controller. Besides differences between motors, transmissions and drivetrain can be added, although it would not have a big impact on performance (may even be detrimental).

There will be no old EVs, they'll be permanently disabled in software for "safety reasons", etc. when parts reach a certain age, and owners won't be able to repair them so when dealers stop supporting the vehicles, they'll disappear. "Jailbroken" vehicles that bypass this will be uninsurable, making it illegal to drive them in states that require auto insurance, at least in the U.S.

In the netherlands they are going too ban natural gas, we have too heat our houses electric in the future, we then also have too find energy too load all those electric cars we dont have enough power too do so yet, burning wood or coal is a big nono so there are plans for a nuclear power central again, so back to the drawing board to find cheap energy, the fire department is not happy with all those accu's and batteries, they are very bad sometimes and if they burn they are very dangerous, they have to be stored like fireworks in separate chambers. Nice electric EV's got the power for them? They will come but we need to prepare first.

I think real car enthusiasts will be okay with change and adapt to new cars that will come out as the days and years go on and technology/culture begins to evolve. I drive a Prius and used to have a '72 Vista Cruiser with the small block Olds 350 in it. I like and enjoy both cars for completely different reasons and am at peace with the idea that my nostalgic old Vista Cruiser will one day rot away and cease to exist--this is the natural order of things. I love the idea of an all electric station wagon that does 0-60 in four seconds just as much as I love the idea of a junky old muscle wagon with a big loud V8 that chirps the rear tires when I get on the gas at a green light. Things evolve and that's okay.

The older you are the more difficult this transition will be in general. I'm 33 and I've resented the increasing complexity of gasoline engines for quite some time. I'm still driving a car that was built in 1997 because " I can still work on it". Unlike current gasoline engine technology that due to increased complexity makes them more difficult to work on yourself. Change is hard. We are creatures that naturally resist change. I don't know where i'm going with this but in the end everything will be just fine. The only people that are even worried about this are people who are stuck in the past. time moves forward, things change. They always have. The good ol' days are always changing places.

I think a lot of amateur car enthusiast do not understand is Most Cars Past 1990 have to have the software "modded" in order to increase performance. You have to reprogram the ECU in order for the car to take advantage of any parts you add like bigger intake, Exhausts, Turbocharging, Changin injector size, Ethanol or Race fuel, etc. Adding performance parts to your car without having the Ecu properly tuned will result in engine damage, the best case scenario the car runs exactly how it did with no improvement. Adding a cold air intake to a car without a tune is going to improve its performance as much as a flame decal. A modern combustion engine is a complicated machine, every part has to be calibrated and tuned for it to run correctly. EV's are not much different, except that a lot of the complexities of propulsion have been simplified.

It will be interesting to see what happens to car culture in the future. With cities that continue to grow ever more densely populated, I suspect that the concept of driving yourself from A to B will eventually be regarded as quaint or ‘rural’. Sure, there will still be an enthusiast community of drivers, but everyone else will just be using a shared pool of self-driving cars. Still decades away, granted, but I’d be surprised if the current model of individual private car ownership applies in 50 years’ time.

I was waiting for you to do a podcast about this, but I was affraid to ask because you've already talked a bit about EVs in other podcasts before. But anyway, thank you! My dream car would be an EV. Actually, an EV converted Subaru Alcione (AKA Subaru SVX CXD), because I like the futuristic look it has, and I think an eletric engine would fit the car style 100%. Maybe I would even build and install its prototype spoiler. And I also *love* the "kick" eletric cars give when you go full throtle with them. Sadly I cant do that. My country taxes and laws wouldnt let me do it. But I also think that combustion engines are cool. Just arent as fast, but they are cooler and also can be fast. Could you do a podcast about your opinion about if phones and/or smartphones will be collectible in the future like computers (and computer parts), laptops (like thinkpads) and video game consoles are? I've done your basic carb rebuilds, timing belts, clutch replacements, and as well as so many other repairs. EV's don't scare me but excite me. We can sup them up. The EV super car market can be modded. Also lets be honest a gas engine is analog in it's power curve vs a electric motor which is 100% HP/Torque from the get go. I love my gas engines but I embrace the fork lift motors/EV motors. I love a big block chevy with low compression pistons with some twin turbo magic, but a EV can be so much more powerful.

Yes you could go with that but the main two reasons is one it has no real engine and no engine sound and 2 it has no transmission. Its not engaging. Has a little one speed gear. I think the electric Porsche version has like maybe a little 2-speed. But they're still boring there's nothing like hearing the whale of a flat 6 911 Turbo with a manual six-speed. Not to mention electric cars are super super heavy and they weigh like 9,000 lb and they burn your tires and burn your brakes up really fast. And they have no handling because they're so heavy. The play between RPM and speed will always be my favorite thing about driving my car. I love to rev the engine high even a low speeds. Like driving in second faster and faster till like 5000 and then giving it a final push all the way to 7500. I love to let the engine scream as loud as it can and I like how I can downshift when I'm coming to a red light that might just turn green and then I'm just in the right gear to accelerate again. Similarly, nothing can beat coming out of a corner in a low gear. Coasting is awesome too and obviously breaking smoothly which isn't possible with EVs as the harness the potential energy and break with a generator as soon as you let go of the gas. EVs have no need for a gearbox and they are completely quiet. They are really boring even if they accelerate like crazy. It's really like driving an automatic diesel but somehow even worse. It's basicall playing mario kart, you just hold A to drive and that is worse than taking the bus because on the bus you can at least do things on your phone. EVs can drive further if they drive slowly which means speed limits will be lowered and charging station will become very common on streets but regular cars won't be allowed to park there. I can also imagine roads or entire cities where regular cars are staight up banned. Environmentalist hate us drivers with all their heart but I won't stop driving until they somehow manage to arrest or kill me for it lol.

Personally, I don't care so much about whether cars are fast or slow, I think some people might be afraid of electric cars "all feeling the same" or "being boring". Another thing is that I'm used to driving a manual car, and I enjoy the feeling of a manual gearbox. While a manual gearbox is not needed in an electric vehicle, since an electric motor has a constant torque output (unlike a petrol engine), I find it a lot more engaging, and, in the end, part of the fun of driving in general. I think I'd probably enjoy it if there was a separate ECU that could simulate the "weights" on a fake clutch pedal, or a fake gear lever... I don't know, call me crazy, but there you go.

There are still some very basic problems to solve. Most people do not have the ability to charge their vehicles from home as they rent and/or live in condos that do not have charge capability. Range anxiety will continue to be a problem until cars can be charged at a station in a similar amount of time to gassing up. Then there's the kind of power draw that a station will need to feed a car 300+ miles worth of power. The storage and battery tech is simply not there yet. I say this as a Chevy Volt owner. I LOVE the electric side of my vehicle - most of my miles are on electric alone, BUT, I'm thankful it has a gas engine just in case I need a few extras miles on my commute that day.

ALL cars will be fly-by-wire (computer controlled). High-end sports cars already divorce the user experience from mechanical control of the car. Mechanical types no doubt feel threatened by having their skills/knowledge made redundant, but some of those skills will still be relevant with electrics. (As a 3D animator, I routinely saw skill sets made redundant by improvements in software - not fun.) EV design will not necessarily be 'cookie-cutter' though. Motor-in-wheel solutions, for instance, promise to free car design from the traditional drivetrain layout, transforming the shape and layout of cars. The modular, relatively mechanical simplicity of the tech will eventually lower the bar for admission. Modders, Makers, and the electric car will create custom cooling rigs, bespoke layouts for every activity, in-house 3D printed/milled parts, carbon fibre monocoque hulls, and so on. That's not touching software yet which will add another layer of capability. Another related item to consider are the traffic control systems and inter-car computer communications that will work in tandem to maximize traffic flow. There will be a great outcry about the loss of autonomy, which will be largely ignored in favour of improved safety and commute times. The illusion of driver autonomy will be preserved to a limited degree, as it is now, but limited by the cars computers.

I’ve been a racing fan for around a decade since I was about 20 (and from when I watched F1 with my dad as a kid) but over that time I’ve moved further and further towards my love of EVs and really starting seeing fossil fuelled cars as the enemy of the future we want. I still watch traditional racing series like F1 and pretty much all the other main ones alongside Formula E (which is the best), and I play sim racing games and enjoy them a lot. But I drive an EV since a couple of years ago and I love driving them. I don’t miss the sound at all, and even though both the cars I’ve owned are not sports cars at all, they are extremely fun to drive. It’s hard to understand that by watching a video of someone driving one. You have to experience one. And once we get more EV sports and supercars, like a Mazda MX-5 or the new Tesla Roadster to go along with the Model 3 Performance then even Jeremy Clarkson will get it. Car culture will evolve. It will focus on handling, driving enjoyment, power and torque, and customisation will remain a huge aspect. Engine noise and manual shifting will be quickly forgotten as people fall in love with instant torque. Self driving will shrink car culture in the longer term but that would happen regardless of what powertrain the car has.

It takes a lot of energy to run a car on hydrogen because the way you produce hydrogen. Elon spoke about that a long while ago why even run a car on hydrogen when you can use the same energy to run the car. But still, hydrogen is cleaner than gas so just maybe for the sake of nostalgia and old school we might see hydrogen cars in the form of old classics. Some like the sound and I assume the combustion of hydrogen will sound kinda the same? Not sure but if so it would be a logical option to put a hydrogen engine in an old car.

That if anything goes wrong offers CRIPPLE mode, aka drive home slow sucker, then get it checked out! That modern engine yes is mechanical but also very digital/electrical. You don't get 700HP out of that engine without it being electronically tickled! You really want actual mechanical. I hope you like going back a whole damn time... And you know, take an older car, a nice model that is beloved. And put electric engines them and batteries. Keep it looking as if it is an older car that should be ashmatic and only praying to ever do 50MPH. And just show the other cars that yours can do over 80MPH easily.
