I respect Carlos, but people very quickly forget how many times his team mate was faster (and probably kinder to the tires) with a broken front wing. Silverstone 2022 is the first one that comes to mind, a race that Carlos won purely due to Ferrari's incompetence. In reality, it was Leclerc's race to win, but not double stacking during the SC is what cost him in the end.

I think he's called underrated because multiple times in his career he has lost his seat to a more famous driver despite him not doing anything wrong performance wise (Renault, now Ferrari). Plus, he had been historically overshadowed by more famous teammates despite comparing very well to all of them. He should be as hyped as Norris and Leclerc in my view - he may be a touch slower but he has the highest race IQ on the grid alongside his fellow spaniard, and to be fair, it seems like he finally is now. Ferrari will not regret their decision financially. And maybe Lewis will get as good pace as Sainz has in Ferrari relative to Leclerc or slightly better. but i dont see him beating Leclerc or leading the team. Lewis is not a technical driver, he cannot spearhead strategy, and he hasnt changed team in 10 years (Sainz is the antithesis to these things) and id argue doesnt demonstrate the Rosberg-level commitment Sainz has, who changes home to be closer to his teams, among other things. Thats what makes Sainz great. He isnt a natural elite but he works that much more diligently than his peers. Plus, Hamilton is past his prime. He won't be a pushover, but if Ferrari wanted a new team leader Hamilton will not give them that. more significantly, I think Hamilton and Leclerc wont have the on track chemistry Sainz has. Lewis already got feisty with George, i dont see it being better with Leclerc. Sainz works well with everyone. this could cost Ferrari valuable points. I also think its interesting to imagine Sainz vs Russell at Merc. If he can match Leclerc he can surely match Russell. and how would the team respond to that if Antonelli is lined up in the future? could get spicy if that happens

I think Lewis's performance last year in the W14 disagrees with everything you are trying to say regarding his performance, so there's that. And I most definitely think that Lewis could be equal or better than Leclerc, I'd struggle to see him really be behind him consistently. As for the team leadership thing, I really think Ferrari is pushing Leclerc in the long term, but for now, they want to benchmark a known top driver who has broken all kinds of records to see how Leclerc stacks up against him. That being said, I can see where you are coming from in terms of him not being a technical driver, but clearly he has some know how on how to best optimize the cars due to his experience. Everyone treats him like a rookie and not like the veteran he is for some reason I can't quite understand.

@thomasredden4263

@@royshavrickI don’t think anything this fella has said is treating him like a rookie. Lewis is an incredible driver, but he isn’t great at race strategy on the fly, nor is he that great at helping to develop a race team. He gets credit as such often times bc of moving to Mercedes at the right time, but that success is largely based on the huge amount of money they spent on engine development and getting the most out of it in a period of time where the motor was far and away the most important part of the car. He’s not bad at any of these skills, he’s just not elite at them in the way Sainz is bc he’s never had to be, Sainz does have to be to close a skill gap that doesn’t exist for Lewis or Charles, but in doing so has rounded himself as one of the best talents on the grid at always capitalizing, and he’s getting better at qualifying all the time, if he continues to do so there is a great chance he could be a WC.

No, because Sainz is a Gerhard Berger type of driver and Hamilton is a Senna type of driver. Berger was as good as anyone on a good day and yes he outqualified Senna at McLaren every 5th race on average and ran him close in the others. The 1987 Australian GP was a Gerhard Berger grand slam, pole, win, fastest lap and every single lap led. His last win was the 1997 German GP at Hockenheim where he was on pole, won and had the fastest lap. Aged 38 too. He had several spirited drives in his career - even those times he didn't win. Berger is also one of an elite group of only 10 drivers in F1 history to have a winning span of 10 years and more between their first and last wins in F1. He is also part of the elite group of only 35 drivers who have 10 or more wins in F1. A d*mn good driver by any measure. He also remained in top teams throughout his final 12 years in F1. But he was no Senna and neither was he a Prost. And thus far I'd say it's fair to put Sainz in this bracket.

I’m glad someone with some voice has finally mentioned it. All season long I’ve heard “Carlos Sainz revenge train” and people supporting him to show Ferrari how much of a clown they are drop him and mainstream media like “The Race” using words like “dumped” is really fueling the fire. F1 fans on social media are the most fickle and dramatic people ever, Lewis is not washed and it’s his car that’s holding him back for the majority right now because his performances last year showed he still has it. You also have to consider that the strong links to Audi means that in 2 years, Carlos might be gone anyway and he was never a super long-term prospect for Ferrari. Hence the stars allligned for Carlos to unfortunately not get his contract renew, but it doesn’t mean Ferrari hate him or don’t believe in him. Sainz having the season he his having, i want nothing less than a number 1 driver role for him.

Lewis has won about a hundred races more than Carlos. He hasn't forgotten how to win, but even he can't do anything with a car that dies on him! Don't get me wrong, Carlos is a great driver, underrated by some - not all, and definitely not by me. He's not compared that favourably to Charles (mostly by the press). He's going to be a cracking addition to any team. He's not a flamboyant racer but he's a very intelligent one. Reminds me of Prost, "The Professor" on track. I'm sure he'll get a decent drive next year. It would be a crime if not.

Sainz is criminally underrated TEAM driver, the amount of defensive and self-sabotage driving he does for his teammates rarely gets praise, or even noticed at all. It's not glamorous and it doesn't win driver championships but it makes him likeable to the fans. However, ultimately, it's his decision to race this way. The F1 greats are only great because they focus on being the fastest driver on track, every single time they compete. It may come across as selfish at times but they don't need to care about being liked or not, they know deep down individual results are what determine greatness in the long run. It's a similar story with Checo, they have both made the conscious decision to be less competitive and accept their role as second best because they have allowed their constructors to delude them (and us fans) into thinking that the constructors championship is more important than the drivers championship.

Short answer: absolutely not. Ferrari had to make a choice between Leclerc and Sainz for their future, they couldn't keep them both in one team and keep the garage harmonious. They chose Leclerc which makes sense: not only is he the more consistent driver but he is the literal messiah in the eyes of some tifosi. Then, Ferrari had a real problem from mismanagement under Binotto, and while Fred Vasseur has cleaned out some of that rot, he needs good talent to replace it. Enter Hamilton. This signing isn't about Lewis being a top driver, that will frankly likely be Leclerc's job, rather Ferrari signed Lewis Hamilton in order to poach top tier talent from every other team they can, using Lewis as a lure. Lewis will likely retire after three years, and in the long term, Ferrari have Ollie Bearman, who has already proved himself in a Ferrari. Hamilton is a vital piece in Fred Vasseur's plan to rebuild the team to get them up to a technical standard to win world championships. Sainz will likely go to Audi in 2026 anyway. I think what could be possible is Sainz to Merc for a year, while Merc scramble to train up Kimi Antonelli, then Sainz to Audi. I don't believe in Sainz to Red Bull-I remember the rumoured infighting at Toro Rosso in 2015-16 between the Sainz and Verstappen camps, and besides, Sainz will clearly always be n2 at Red Bull as long as Max Verstappen is there.

If you think that Hamilton is "pressured" by whether Ferrari regret choosing him or not then you are nothing short of a fool. Hamilton has had much more pressure than that in his carrier, all the way back from 2007 of proving himself to 2021 where he had to fight for an 8th world championship, and he didn't fumble one bit (maybe Baku but that's a unicorn of a mistake). Wanna see Hamilton under real pressure? Check his 07 and 08 seasons, check his 2014 and 2015 seasons, check his 2018 season, check his 2020 season, were sure it was "gifted" but he was chasing a record equaling 7 championships, the best where he showed his coolness under pressure is the last 4 races in 2021. He is not in any way shape or form pressured by this.

Lewis is 40 next year and he's up against the best qualifier on the grid. Yes he's a 7X champ and the greatest of all time but this is the Hamilton from 2024, not the one from 2018-21, its a repeat of Rosberg and Schumacher at Mercedes from 2010-12

One thing is for certain about this driver change for 2025: Leclerc *_needs_* to stamp his authority in the team because even though Leclerc has arguably the best one-lap pace of the entire field, that pace means nothing if you can't string the whole weekend together. Ferrari Corporate's move to sign Hamilton under Vasseur's nose is already a damning vote of no confidence to the Scuderia from Corporate, and I suspect if Leclerc can't beat Sainz this year Hamilton will be getting preferential treatment from 2025 and beyond.
