Not as out of his league as you think. Superman definitely outclasses him in raw power and durability but Goku is equal in speed, very near in experience (Superman has more years in combat but the demon-fighting years don't really mean much since no one was capable of dealing with him anyway) , higher in skill, tenacity and ability to fight against stronger opponents. Plus he gets stronger mid fight. So Superman actually had a fight on his hands and he had to really try unlike every other time they fought.

Suns are a natural part of the universe. 2: It doesn't matter how good your martial arts are if the opponent you're fighting is several times stronger and faster than you.
