I saw a previous video on hanging to relieve shoulder pain that Bob and Brad did. I bought the book and because it was Bob and Brad recommending this technique I went for it. I’m 69 and had been a life long lap swimmer but I quit when I was 65 because of severe should pain. Stopping swimming made my shoulder pain go away but did not help me stay fit. I started hanging 30 seconds a couple of times a day for a couple of weeks. It hurt some at first but quickly started making my shoulders feel better. I continued and increased to 45 seconds. My shoulders were feeling so good I thought I’d try swimming again. Started swimming slowly, with plenty of rest. Now I’m back up to swimming 1/2 mile twice a week. NO SHOULDER PAIN. I’m very consistent in hanging at least some every day. This has completely resolved my shoulder pain. Highly recommend this idea and watching Mike and Bob. They have taught me several techniques that have decreased pain and increased my activity level. Thanks to Bob and Brad and now Mike! I really trust what you offer!

Coincidence is a funny thing; i have just installed a hanging bar and now comes this video. I know from past experience that it will take a few weeks of daily use before I can manage more than a few seconds but experience has also taught me to keep at it for the inevitable rewards. I have positioned it on my stairway in a place I must walk under several times a day....i simply pause when descending the final step, reach up, hang and relax. Being where it is I have no excuse for not doing so! I have other elements built into daily life that help me ward off stiffness etc. as I approach 70 such as keeping my futon mattress on the floor to bend and stretch frequently getting in and out and when make it or change the sheets, and opening and closing curtains on high rails so I have to stretch up to do so at least twice a day. Use it or lose it, and if you give yourself no choice but use you won't lose and please forgive the syntax. I have lived with the difficult and painful consequences of a nasty childhood bone disease and i've always struggled for fitness and building exercise into everyday activities has helped so much. Best wishes to you guys, Bob not least of all.

I love your videos. The book by John M. Kirsch, MD that Brad and Mike referenced for “hanging” to reduce shoulder pain is a “god send”. It eliminated my rotator cuff and impingement severe pain, and the need for surgery was eliminated. Now, for maintenance, I hang every other day, for 12 1/2 min (15 sec hang, 60 sec break, repeat). Then do the 45 reps of the 3 weight exercises, up to 8lbs. Work gradually into the hang and weights, to get to those hanging times and weights/reps. You will be amazed, if you stick with it. Thanks Brad and Mike.

I found, almost accidentally, two great ways of hanging that is even fun and does more than work and loosen the shoulders: First, i hung a simple single-point trapeze in the garage I made from rope and wooden dowel in an acrobatics class many years ago. Its about 6-8" lower than my raised arms. After straight hanging for a minute, i can push to the sides and get full side stretches, and do circles and twists that gently move those shoulder muscles for more stretches, even working to loosen the spine. The other device is a pipe bar hung from the ceiling in my house. No big deal, but then i through over a thick exercise band loop and would hang from the two ends of the loop. This was much more comfortable to hang from, as the rubber band added bounce to the hang, and i can do assisted pull ups and squats together (because of how low to the floor i am hanging) without any injury or jarring stops and starts, and do a wide array of shoulder and arm stretches that are fun to do. I believe it simulates moving and hanging from flexible tree branches, my fellow monkeys. Maybe ill post a video (would be my fist one) showing how these work.

I was skeptical but I tried it because I was desperate. My husband suspended a heavy dowl between the joists in our basement. It's absolutely a game changer. Years of shoulder pain gone. Also helps with tractioning my spine and relieving facet joint pain.

This works! I’m in year 3 of hanging. I started hanging after impingement surgery which left me with some frozen shoulder and pain. My other shoulder was also almost ready for the same surgery. I was so tired of going to PT and doctors that I decided to give this a try. I bought the book which was very interesting, but I learned everything I needed to know right here on Bob and Brad. Within a week I knew it was working, and in a couple of months I was completely free of pain and restriction. Today, 3 years later, I have 100% range of motion in both shoulders and no pain or stiffness. I hang on average 4 times a week to maintain this. The hardest part is trying to convince other people that something this simple can work better than costly, painful surgery!

Thanks for the video. I try to do some hanging, but I can't go ten seconds unless I'm having a really good day. I have to settle for five or six seconds. Sometimes, I have to settle for three or four seconds, especially on the third or fourth time trying.

I have a question... I'm unsure how the elbows/hands are supposed to be positioned during stretching and I want to make sure I'm doing them correctly. The shoulder joint is so uniquely and dynamically rotational unlike other joints, and when the elbow/hand are turned internally and externally, it rotates the proximal humerus and it seems like that would affect the specific positioning of the area you want to stretch. For example, looking at the first stretch with Mike, he has his hands facing forward... does it matter if they were rotated (along with the elbow) so they were facing towards himself? In the second example with Brad, his hands, and to some extent his elbows, are facing towards himself while gripping the pole that is positioned in front of him. I'm more interested in how this affects the upper shoulder streching, not so much the scapular area. Thank you for a great video!

Can this be done or helpful for me since I have rotator cuff injuries in both shoulders (desperately want to avoid yet another various surgery) AND I have nerve damage and muscular atrophy in my right hand as well - caused from ulnar & carpal nerve injuries.. which are bilateral actually but the right is definitely more involved, damage wise.. (FYI - I am a retired letter carrier) I also have a residual whiplash injury to the right side neck/top of shoulder.. yes I’m a mess. There’s more but to other parts of this worn out body…😐. “I am what I am and I eat me spinach”. I forgot I also have arthritis and dang it… fibromyalgia.. and a torn hamstring and sciatica

I got my ultrasound results a few days ago…”Tenosynovitis of the proximal long head of biceps tendon; Rotator cuff tendinosis, without evidence of a tear.” I’m not sure if hanging is conducive to helping to resolve this particular diagnosis, but I’ll ask my orthopedic doctor about it when I see him again in the next few days to go over my results. Are tendinitis and tendinosis the same or somewhat different, and if so, are the treatment options a little different regarding PT? After initial unremarkable x-rays and diagnosis of tendinitis, I underwent a couple of months of PT without much improvement. Hence the follow up ultrasound and next orthopedic visit to review options.

Well, carefully done, without your full weight and using the right type support... it can strengthen and lengthen your neck... Using the wrong support... rope, chain, cable etc and the full weight can lead to long lasting damage, as it lengthens the neck too far...

I'm a strongman/powerlifter who had heart surgery(artial myxoma)they went in through my ribs(praiseGod). My question is, they pinned my left shoulder back for 6 hours during the surgery. As a result I have 'frozen shoulder'. Adhesive capsulitis. I have to really warm up my shoulder before doing any overheard presses , but it feels out of place like I have to put it back in. Will hanging help? Or hanging from my left arm and letting forcing back in?..any suggestions would help..I'm trying to avoid surgery. If they do it, there's a 10% chance they'll break my arm.

My understanding is that for strengthening exercises, skipping exercise every other day is somewhat beneficial. Would this in any way apply to stretching? I was wondering if after I achieve a level of flexibility that I desire, is it better for me to stretch every other day every day or maybe just as needed?
