Israel has urged what it called "nations of the civilised world" to oppose the International Criminal Court prosecutor's request for arrest warrants for its prime minister and defence minister. Karim Khan also wants arrest warrants for three Hamas leaders.

Actually the ICC jurisdiction is because the Government of the State of Palestine accepted, by means of a declaration under article 12(3) of the Rome Statute, the ICC jurisdiction since 13 June 2014. State of Palestine acceded to the Rome Statute on 2 January 2015. The Rome Statute will enter into force for the State of Palestine on 1 April 2015. So war crimes committed in Palestine fall under the ICC jurisdiction.

@@commonpike No crimes must have been committed either by a signatory to the treaty of Rome or for the crimes to have been committed in an area of one of the signatories to the treaty of Rome. For example in a USA/Russia war that occurred in Russia or the USA they are not signatories and so the ICC would have no jurisdiction, but if they took the fight into Canada then any war crimes committed in Canada would be under ICC jurisdiction. So yes the ICC needs member states to issue arrest warrants.

The US doesn't recognise the ICC and in the past has said that the US reserves the right to use military force to free US citizens held in the Hague or detained on the ICC behalf! Your right they're probably not going to arrest them, mostly because Netanyahu or Yahya Sinwar now wont be traveling anyplace signed up to the ICC. What's more you can bet anyone that is, most certainly want Netanyahu landing on any airport runway they own to test the warrant issued. Its exactly why Sunak said its, 'Deeply unhelpful' issuing the warrant, as he KNOWS should Netanyahu attempt to visit the the UK or any of its territories from now on, he'd be duty bound to order the arrest of Netanyahu, or risk being kicked out of the club that is the ICC, which wouldn't be a very good look.

Technically they have to arrest them. Who is they? Any country who is signatory to the Rome convention (which says we wont do war crimes). More than 100 countries are signatories. The US and Israel are not, though. This means they want to keep open the option to commit war crimes. Unluckily for Israel, Palestine is a signatory, so this gives the court authority over crimes done in Palestine. This is my understanding of the situation, at least.

Well, there's no hurry. The accusation is what matters. It doesnt change a lot of the man himself spends time in prison, this is about legitimacy. It's not physical freedom which is at risk, it's the propaganda war itself. This is a huge blow in a series of defeats after defeats. Just by being in the spotlight, Israel loses, because more people see it for what it is. An Apartheid Country. A Fascist Nation. A Terrorist State.
