Watching this, I keep screaming to no one, "You got fuel." "You are turning the engine over." "Now check for spark!" "Take off that distributor cap." File the point gap if needed. Fuel and spark are always the first two checks.

He's been driving me nuts for two videos. I'm thinking it's pretty basic: Fuel, Spark, Compression! Oh! and that starter won't turn until the stuck Bendix pulls in and allows the field switch to make. The alternator bearing only costs like $3.00. Wasted money and effort.

I have owned three CJ's from that era, 75 CJ5, 77 CJ7 golden eagle, and a 79 CJ7. The 77 CJ7 Golden Eagle, with the 304 was my favorite. They all had sloppy steering boxes, and the bigger the tires, and the more mudding you did with them, the sloppier they got. I miss every one of them now though.

Then my ass cheeks were scrunchin' seat, knowin' that springpack bolt top was prolly sheared and the axle was crooked, on top of the Worn Out manual steering box! My '82 CJ5 had the same box and we put a stock 350 Chevy in it. When I stomped the gas in 2nd gear on a dirt road, it swapped ends ditch to ditch several times, with alternate brake And gas pedals before I got her straightened back out!! Strange, but it seems there is one trick you might not know. If you have any spray can, you can spray into the carb and the engine will fire on it, even without or with old fuel. Of course, what is in the can should not damage the engine (like paint, for example). And obviously, if there are sparks flying around, you have a working flame thrower. Apart from that, it works flawlessly! ;-)

If all else fails hook a log chain to the front end and have someone pull you and pop the clutch on it to fire it off in like 3rd gear and just have them keep pulling until she fires off from brute force :) Back when I was "between starters" I always made sure to park on a hill so I could start mine by rolling down hill and popping the clutch. Mine just had points & condenser (capacitor). Mine had 4 on the floor too, but 1st gear in mine was Granny gear and I generally always took off in 2nd and only used 1st if I was doing something like pulling a buddy out of a ditch or my Brother's VW Beetle out of a muddy cornfield, both of which seemed to happen a lot more often than you'd think. And yes, that 4 in the floor has a long throw pattern. Mine was my 1st stick shift vehicle except for our old John Deere "A" , our old '66 Chevy dump truck and our 1959 Ford "D" school bus, so I always just assumed all stick shifts had long throws, LOL!

Finally subscribed. The CJ pulled me in. I have a 78 CJ5 I'm just starting to dismantle for a rebuild. No motor in my carcass and I don't know what to put in. I'm leaning towards a 300 Ford 6 just for the fun factor and cool old exhaust burble. A friend has several typical 305/350 motors. I'm not a snowflake, but seeing you pour gas in the carb and make sparks right above the throat made me cringe. I've has gas blow up on me on a fire and a friend was scorched when she lit a burn pile and didn't know her husband had dumped old gas on it. Be careful and I hope to see this one running.

One of the reasons you're all over the road are those big tires. They're fine for off road use but for highway driving, just put a set of all season small truck radials or even car radials on it and it will handle a LOT better on the highway (past experience) and that loud hum of the tires will disappear too. Not saying that's your only problem but it can be significant and the ride quality on roads will improve too with car/light truck tires.

The tires are very aggressive for sure. I’m not sure what’s louder on it the exhaust or tires ! Lol

ATF and a bit of acetone works wonders for freeing up cylinders and rings. It's a lot thinner and the acetone helps pull the ATF into the ring lands and down the cylinder. Those remote starter relays should be plentiful, they're super generic and used in many applications. Power in, power out and a signal from your ignition switch

Jeep starter is same as a old Ford, starter solenoid is Ford part too. One thing about AMC is they use a mix of ford, GM, Chrysler parts.

Had a 79 and a 77 neither one went down the road straight I think its a steering gear problem, the 79 had a 360 very similar set up it would lift the front wheels a foot in the air in first very fast death trap but I loved every freakin min. of it, great content.

As far as the starter goes, back when I had my '78 CJ-5 it had a couple teeth missing o the flywheel and that caused me to get really good at changing the starter on mine, lol. It had the 258 straight six. Thing is I NEVER asked for a Jeep starter as if Jeep were printed on the box it always cost 20% more than it would for just an AMC starter and since I knew that they used the same engine in Gremlins back in the day I would always ask for a starter for a 1974 Gremlin with a 258. Always worked just fine :) 99% of the time I bought mine from an old fashioned auto parts store called Auto Value/General Auto Supply. They always told me if they didn't have the part in their warehouse they would find one within 24 hours and they were always true to their word. I tried once to buy one from NAPA and the guy behind the counter argued with me for 5 minutes that I needed a Jeep starter. I finally said, "Look here, sell me a starter for a Gremlin or I'll just go someplace else". He tried arguing again and I said, "Sorry, y'all just lost a customer over your 20% markup and arguing. Now you won't get a cent from me", and I walked out their door and have never been back to a NAPA since.

I mistyped the year. It was a 1980 CJ5 that I purchased new in Nov 1979. My only true complaint with it was the darn quarter-round piece of metal on the rear of the door opening. Every time I would drag my fat butt out of the driver seat the back pocket on my Levi's would snag on it. Eventually I managed to tear out the rear pocket seam on every pair of jeans I owned. The CJ7 has nice big rectangular door opening and didn't have that issue.

Just some advice . Use a good penetrating oil in cylinders or trans fluid with some acetone added or if bad rusted or stuck bad use vinuger . But don't let the vinuger sit in cylinders for more than week or two . Can eat into things . We use it in old tractors .
