This tutorial is for a gravity dyed corner fan fold muck ice dye. I've had some issues getting green dyes to travel down the shirt when gravity dyeing on a rack. So, I experimented with using green dye with a muck dye gravity dye to see if it works better.

It's nice. Great example and confirms my preference when working with greens. I either do a scrunch flat on a rack or an incline dye in a gutter. The other colors I use for gravity dye, blues, purples, reds. gravity muck dye well. Thanks for sharing this one, Angie!

Thank you! 😊 I never noticed an issue until I started gravity dyeing either. My greens always work great with regular ice dyeing. It's kind of strange.

Maybe having the folded part down in the muck affected the dye movement. It appears as though the dye is having to travel upwards in the shirt while it's in the tub, which is actually fighting gravity, before reaching the part of the shirt hanging over the edge. Fighting gravity like that could've possibly affected the dye from traveling. IDK, just a thought...

That's a good theory. I've done several other muck dyed gravity shirts with the same process though and they worked really well compared to this one. If I didn't have them to compare this shirt to, I would think that was the main reason I had issues.

@@FunEndeavors Interesting. I think it'd be really cool if you do a video with this exact fold and color combo but gravity dye it out of the muck. Just as an experiment to see if the dyes travel better with the shirt out of the muck and to compare the two. Thanks!

"Difficult color, green." -Lady Trentham, Gosford Park I like the wispy bits in the upper part of the shirt. Like what outgassing would look like if the vapor was visible, or heat coming off a sidewalk. I've only done one gravity dye with green (I think it was emerald green from Dharma) and don't remember it being any slower than the other colors, but it was a rib knit tank, which maybe helped channel the dye.

I'm always amazed how the colour can "travel" up and over the box, I'll try purple maybe as you said it might do better than the green?! Thank you for showing, the corner fold is very nice👍

Interesting 🧐 I also notice greens have a harder time popping colors when I ice dye vs liquid. It’s pretty though!❤

Love the fan fold portion, the colors and the splits. Sorry the green didn't travel so well. Do like the wispy green, but it would've been real nice if the green was darker and more of it. Thanks, Angie!!! 🥰🥰🥰

I would try mixing a few greens from primaries I just did something similar with tulip dry dye powder as my first dip my toe into dying. I used a 1/4 teaspoon and some jello shot cups from the dollar store. I used a 1-1 ratio and then took a tiny bit and mixed in 3ml water dipped a piece of paper towel. Then, I would add more tiny bits of one color to swing the color the direction i wanted it to go. I ended up with recipes like 3-b, 3-y, and 1-r for brown. The biggest thing to remember is that for any green that isn't emerald it will need small amounts of red to send it to forest, chartreuse, etc. Black or brown to tone it down. I think the primary colors may move better than the pre-blended colors.

Another test with a gravity dye is to use just primary red, yellow, blue and let them essentially race down the shirt. Do this with a normal soda ash soaked shirt no additional soda ash.

As I wrote all that I may have figured it out. I think your greens are striking to the fabric too fast. This means that they are binding to the fabric or water before they get to the bottom of dye surface. To increase the time it takes to bond the dye you reduce either or both the heat or the soda ash. Since the ice isn't helping enough, the soda ash may need to go on later in the process. So maybe wait to add the soda ash until the dye is moving and spray it on after the ice starts melting. Once the dye is where you want it heat set with steam or a heat gun or blow dryer. Also salt in your water will tie up the ions in the water so the dye doesn't attach to the water instead of the fabric. So sprinkling salt on the dye before the ice or after might influence getting the dye to move before binding.

Chemknits is a channel I have watched a bunch. She dyes animal fibers with acid dyes. And has mastered splitting dye. I think that her techniques can be made to work on cotton by swapping acid dye for proceon dye and vinegar for soda ash.

I'm starting to think you just prefer to dye dry shirts lol! :) Love the greens, lots of potential and so many shades! Blue just seems like the stripper glitter of dye, gets everywhere, clingy, and runs all over the place. So easy to go too dark with blue but green seems a bit more shy and hesitant. Tougher to work with but you don't often get green too dark like you can with blue. Sounds like the green at the tip of the shirt was pretty much done and rinsed out more easily. Looks great overall! I seem to recall there's a powder or oil that can be mixed with liquid dyes to help the dye soak in and move, I wonder if that might help with the green movement if you added it as a powder?

I do dye a lot of shirts dry. I do everything in batches. I tie a bunch at one time, then dye quite a few at a time, and so on. So, a lot of the thinner folds dry out before I get the others tied and I'm ready to dye them. You're right about blue 😂, and it's a great mover with gravity dye. It flows really well. I am going to purposely dye a green one while it is still pretty damp and see how that goes. I'm determined to make it work!
