I picked up this vw bug along with a bunch of engines from an estate sale. it has been sitting for 5 years.
the back story is it came from california in 2006 to the east coast so it does not have the normal rust that we see on the east coast.its been painted once and had a fender replaced,

Great find, I'm jealous as hell. Something about the sound of a bug, especially with a good exhaust, that little whistle....tears at my heart strings. You are a lucky man. Don't forget to mount a fire extinguisher.

Watching this brought back VW driving experiences. First car: a '58 Cabriolet, bought in '68 for $10, unbelievably bad condition for 10 years, top rotted to shreds, 3 fenders and both lids piled in back seat, made a "safari buggy" out of it lashing passenger seat over the front. Good times. My brother had a green '68. Once, parking in tight space in Boston, we backed into the space diagonally, lifted the front end, and carried it the rest of the way in, with barely enough room for our legs. Girlfriend had a tan '67 Ghia, fun to drive. An upstairs neighbor had a tan '66 that had been hit in the door that he'd let me use. Nice car, except for having to reach out and pull the "friction-fit" door closed on right turns. A short-term girlfriend (fleas in her waterbed) had a oxidized dark blue '68 with flower stickers. After a wonderful time with a '64 Volvo 544 (my favorite car ever), I got a yellow '72 bug that would bog down a lot unless it was timed by ear. Rolled that one when going around a 2-lane exit ramp next to a semi, only to discover that the snow plow had failed to stay in the left lane, so the plowed area narrowed to one lane. Foot-deep snow, topped by a frozen crust. Left front wheel caught in the crust, car spun around on 2 wheels, and settled backwards onto the driver's side. Others stopped, and we stood it upright quickly enough, drove to a gas station and topped off the oil. Only down a quart. -- I loved these cars. Though I loved my '64 Volvo and '66 GTO more, that doesn't diminish my fondness for the bugs.

That’s the only way to go about anything you’re working on really. A lot of people tend to just go in a project without a game plan but on these gasoline powered engines there’s always the 3 things you need. Fuel, spark and air. Easier when you are familiar with certain engines but same concept.

Saw a nice bug in a store parking lot and stopped to check it out. Looking in the back behind the back seat I had to wonder how in the heck I was small enough to crawl back in there. I remember the carpeting being a sharp pokey type that didn't make it all that fun. Thanks for the memories.

Nice! When I was a kid, both of my parents drove Bugs, older than this one. I remember no gas gauge, just a lever to switch over to the reserve when gas got low. On those occasions when there was a family road trip, the golden retriever rode in the rumble seat. She didn't like it :-(

This should be an interesting series. It takes me back to my high school and college days when I drove a 67 bug. It would go anywhere in the snow and could overcome most mechanical failures until you could get it fixed. I drove mine with dead batteries, broken clutch cables, ejecting spark plugs, and non working heaters. I toured around with my future wife in that car, went parking and sparking in it, camped with it, and even drove it 300miles to the beach for our first vacation. What fun we had!

My wife had a '68 Bug, green when we got married in '71. We kept it until 80 when she gave it to her mother and her stepfather sold it in '85. I put a many a mile on the bug it it would not pull the slack out of your drawers and was a real nightmare on the interstate, especially for a boy who grew up with pony cars.

My wife and I had a '68 just like this when I was in the Air Force. Same color too! Biggest difference was it had A/C! it was a dealer add on. In Texas it was really appreciated. The problem was, floored it would go 62 MPH, when the A/C kicked on it would drop to 58MPH. And, it floated away from our apartment once during the rainy season. We pushed it back home and chained it to the poll in out carport until the water went down.

It's sad that it became a item about money and went into our collective history books as a by gone era. 1968 VW Beetles were a weird year. lots of unique parts and things done this year. this was the first year of the Auto-Stick which came with a IRS, but the Manual 4speed still came as a swing axle. also there is a tube that runs along the front of the gas tank for venting, in 69 they moved this closer to the fuel filler. I had a yellow one, my first car. it had IRS and a Maunal Transaxle, someone had replaced the Autostick with a 4 speed from a 1970 Beetle, before i came to own it. I miss that car every time I see a bug. I also had a 69 in the same color as this one that DID have an auto, stick, fun and frustrating those autosticks.

I had it 18 months and it spend most of that time not running. The fenders did not rust while I had it but the paint came off the tail lights the first time I washed it, then they replaced them and it leaked into the trunk. I had the car a month and the thermostat went open and I had no heat.. Then the starter relay went bad and it would not run, get the picture ;-) I sold it and bought a VW Rabbit. Never owned another Chrysler product again. So impressed, watched you 1970 VW convertable video, 30+ years and that damn engine still kicked over, wonder how a modern car would do after it sits that long?
