-- Burning down the area isn't out of the realm of possibilities... it isn't wise to fire up a long dormant vehicle that's inundated with dry leaves. He stated that there was a three-inch layer under the Ranchero, that's all I need to know! All it takes is a single spark flying off the vehicle, especially from a rusted out exhaust system, to ignite the dry tinder. Before you know it, you've got a raging fire. I myself have lit up dry grass as have a few friends when we were really young, decades ago. What were we doing? The same thing as our hosts - firing up a dormant rig. Fortunately, we were well prepared and the fire was put out quickly with a pre-primed hose... not that the fires were going anywhere anytime fast. There wasn't much grass to burn in the dirt and gravel. The bottom line here is that in this situation, one cannot be too careful. It's wise to take precautions and be prepared. I would have suggested to at least clear out the burnable material from under and away from the Ranchero before firing it up. It would only take a few minutes with a decent rake. I also hope they had a useable fire extinguisher ready although I didn't see one. Peace & good vibes to all. - Max Giganteum PS AES master tech? WTH is an AES master tech? I presume you mean ASE master tech...

I've had a few Cleveland's over the past years. There is a process where you can put the Cleveland heads on Winsor blocks. My Brother-in-law currently has a numbers matching '73 Ranchero GT with a 4v Cleveland, it's 99.9% OEM, only exception is an aftermarket GT center cap on one wheel.
@MaxGiganteum
@MaxGiganteum 3 ай бұрын
A "Clevor" was not uncommon back in the 70s & 80s before the proliferation of aftermarket heads. To use the Cleveland heads on a Windsor block requires some machine work but it isn't difficult. IIRC, you also need an intake manifold that will mate up. The downfall lies in the aftermarket, the aftermarket aluminum-based heads are superior which is why you don't typically see folks making a Clevor anymore and haven't more or less since the 90s. Still, it's a fun project if you come up with the heads and an intake for cheap... and don't mind doing some machining. best wishes! - Max Giganteum

Hey Richard & Cristina, My father traded in a yellow with white cab 72 Ford Explorer F-100 with a 302cid with probably a C4,transmission for a new 1974 Ford Ranchero with a 351 Cleveland that was gold color and one of the coldest AC that you could imagine. That Ranchero would absolutely scream, But was a severe gas hog which was not good during the days of fuel embargoes. Interesting enough, My dad sold the Ranchero to a friend of his that operated a Texaco station who absolutely fell in love with the Ranchero. The partner who co owned the Texaco station also loved the Ranchero so much that he ordered a brand new 1975 Ranchero that was identical in color to the one that my dad sold other than being a year newer. @IrishOutlaw KZfaq channel also has a Ranchero that he featured on some of his videos.

My mother had a 1972 Ford Gran Torino that had a 302 cid engine that I drove when I was in high school back in the early 1980s which did indeed have the same front grill and front end color like the young man in your video was describing. While my mother was still driving the car, She wrecked the car while going to work on a slick road in which afterwards my uncle went to a salvage yard and found a complete front end which was the exact same color blue as the Ranchero while the rest of the car was the off color antique white color that Ford was using back then. I distinctly remember that you had to keep the battery terminals very clean or you were greeted with the annoying Ford solenoid chattering that we all despised to hear at the worst possible moments. We would load the trunk area with concrete blocks and install some aggressive tread snow tires on the back of the car for the rather bad winter weather conditions that we had in KY in the late 1970s and early 1980s in which the Torino was like a tank - Literally. All of the Fords that we owned with the 302 engines always seemed to be excellent in starting in extreme cold weather conditions.

That's a good thing about that fuel pump. You're a smart man. A lot of people don't realize that those things dry out and the flaps won't.seal I always take a little bit of gas and just go down-the-line and get it wet That yard. Sure has a lot of good vehicles, I sure would love to see it.

Hey Richard and Christina, great job on getting the old girl going but I believe you are right Richard it does sound like it may have jumped time. They act just like that sometimes have little power. Well take care you too and will be waiting for the next video!!

It had enough power to spin the wheels. Some of the brakes are stuck on. It would have taken about one minute to take a leaf blower and blow out the bed and under the hood. That would have made better working conditions. Nice job of cleaning all the connections and checking the fluids.

@@whattherust It looked to me that there was a fastback in the video... white in color with no rear axle underneath it? Fairlane, Torino or possibly a Cobra. I would be on that vehicle like a rash if I were in your shoes! Check the VIN to see what is what - that car could be quite valuable! It's already desirable as is. - Max Giganteum

Richard the timing cover tells you if it's Windsor or a Cleveland. If the timing cover is flat and and attached to the engine block it's a Cleveland. If the the water pump is bolted on and through the timing cover it's a Windsor' Also if the Thermostat housing is bolted to the block and not to the intake manifold it's a Cleveland.

@@whattherust More easy ways to tell the difference between the W & C engines. The 351C valve covers have 8 bolts. It uses small 14 mm spark plugs. The 351W valve covers have 6 bolts and it uses 5/8 inch spark plugs. Fuel pumps: the 351C fuel pump is mounted with 2 vertically positioned bolts - one each on top and bottom of the base. The 351W fuel pump is mounted with 2 bolts horizontally on the left & right sides of the base. The info provided by @rgbigdog is correct as far as I remember with the addition of the timing cover being made from aluminum. Best wishes! - Max Giganteum

Hi Richard and Christina, Great job on the Ranchero. As regards the timing issue, is it possible that when someone had previously put in a new distributor, they installed it a few teeth off of top dead center? That could make the engine appear to have jumped timing and produced the same symptoms. My hats off to you for working on the car out in the open, away from your shop and the additional tools you'd have at your disposal. Looking forward to the follow- up rescue from that same junkyard. Sounds like it will be a real challenge.
@whattherust

You might be correct, Ray, although I did identify TDC and the distributor did align with #1. The crank timing mark lined up as well.
