Next up on the chopping block is this 2004-05 Chevy Malibu! Got the big v6 in it, with over 300k miles! I'm not sure whether to be terrified or impressed!

I like the Malibu but even so i'm amazed to see one reach 300k - it's still a Chevy when all's done! I've seen far worse interiors brought back (remove seats and carpets and hit with power wash / wet vac) but the question is whether it's worth it for such a high miler, even one that's otherwise in good shape.

@@regal_type Yeah those Impala's are a little more needy than these Malibu's from what I see... The transmissions in them are more sensitive to heat buildup so gotta keep the fluid drained more often or the transmissions burn up (and used transes for them aren't cheap). The suspensions on them are pretty weak too, and we replace alot of gas pedal assemblies/throttle bodies/wiring on those (for the notorious "reduced engine power" message alot of them get). They aren't garbage but they nickel and dime too much for me.

Had an 04 Malibu Maxx.. so same ugly car but as a Hatchback wagon thing... even in that same burgandy color. Had just over 100000 miles on it when we bought it and we drove the wheels off that car. It was a bomber for the 1 hour each way highway commute myself and one of my employees do daily back and forth so we could let our trucks sit at the plant and never move. Put about 120000 miles over what it had when we got it in 2.5 years time and then one day it ended itself. Steering column made this awful cracking sound for a long time and we never even looked at what it was. One day the column or the rack broke and the steering wheel would just freewheel lol breaking the clockspring for airbag and whatnot. We just junked it as it wasn't worth the money to repair in my opinion being 15 years old with 230000 miles on it. Buddy went to town smashing all the windows out of it, ramming it into stuff in his yard and then had it hauled away. The 3.5 ran great though and the trans never had a problem..... honestly beyond oil changes we did plugs, inner and outer tie rod ends and tires... thats it. Being the hatchback we hauled a couple LS's in it.. a 4L80e.... a 9.5" 14 bolt... hell used it like a truck. If the column never let go in it I am sure it would have surpassed 300000 miles easily.. probably still be driving it lol.

I paid $900 for a rusty green 14 year old Malibu that had absolutely no options whatsoever, but it did have aftermarket wheels and new tires. Had 140K miles when I got it and I drove it into the ground. The only thing that didn't work was the backup lights, even with new bulbs. Oh, and when I opened the trunk I could see my feet through the rust holes. Finally the oil pump failed at 65 MPH and it seized. I let it cool for an hour and it got me home, rods knocking like crazy. I took all the good parts off it and put them on another 14 year old Malibu, which got totalled a year later. After the insurance settled I got triple my money back. So guess what I bought to replace it? Wrong! It sure as hell wasn't another Mailbu! They are decent, basic transportation with good enough reliability.

@@thesilentgeneration1711 These shared their platform with the Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura, not the Chevy Cobalt/Pontiac G5. And the ancient Cavalier shares nothing with any of those cars other than also being made by GM.

@@braaapattack2937 The engine and trans combo are the most reliable parts on these cars. Simple and oldschool. The Ecotec 4cyl would be a different story.

The stains all over the interior are from all that fast food that was eaten in there. The seat stains look like dried up Sprite soda or 7 Up. Rent a Rug Doctor carpet cleaner with an attachment, and it will clean up. The Rug Doctor also sucks up the cleaner and water out of the carpet and seats.
