That old Shaker had a 24v starter. You'll need four 6's linked together to turn it over.

Yes my BF dad says you are rite would have had 4 big ole 6 volt batteries, he has a 1979 GM-HD cabover with a 8V92TA ( TA= Turbo Assist) and that is what it uses and still uses on the farm to haul grain.

Stater motor is 24 volt.once started the change Over solenoid cuts voltage to 12 volts to run everything else.should have four smaller batts in the Batt tray.hooking up all the battery leads on them is a nightmare and the solenoids can get water in them and not work very well.

@@stocks4bt Always rotate an engine manually that hasn't been started for awhile. Rain entering the stack(s) or even a minor head gasket or wet-cylinder cavitation pinhole leak could fill a cylinder or more and cause a hydro-static lock. If this is the case, then repeated attempts at starting can bend connecting rods and break pistons.

This reminded me of a time when my unit was prepping our 915 A-2s, (Freightliners) to ship down to Kuwait City. These trucks had a jumper cable that had both electrodes built into it that the military called a "safety" cable. I was a specialist at the time and the young fellow working with me had just been made a sergeant. He was having trouble plugging in the cable, so I tried to give him a hand. I've been around trucks all my life, and I joined the Army at 32 years old right before the cut off for my age. The age gap between me and the new sergeant was probably about 18 years, or almost as many years as he was old. I asked him to let me see the end of the cable, and sure enough, one of the outer tangs had been bent. I sat the cable down and went to unplug the other end of the cable, but the new sergeant new all there was to know about these so called "safety cables", and he decided to stick a screwdriver into the end to straighten it out before I had a chance to get it unplugged saying, "That's why they' called "safety cables"! Now it is important to remember that both the positive and the negative electrodes are in the end of these "safety cables". So... well... one smoke-puffing frizzy hair-do later and I was finally able to get my know-it-all sergeant to understand that those "safety cables" are only as safe as you let them be! 🤣🤣🤣

Examples of two 12v batteries connected together: Series is: + to -, + to - ; your outside unattached positive and negative form your total voltage out (12v + 12v @800Amp hours/CA/CCA*) = 24v @800Amp hours/CA/CCA* _Multiply the voltage by number of batteries_ and, keep the storage/charge capacity as one battery. Parallel is: + to +, and; - to - You'd still only have 12v yet @1,600Amp hours/CA/CCA* _Multiply the storage/charge capacity by number of batteries_ yet, keep the voltage as one battery. Peterbilts are over rated anyway. You pay way too much for the name. They are built by Paccar, just like Kenworths, and I would take a Kenworth over a Pete any day. It's just a different shaped hunk of fiberglass, and they put the same engines and drive trains in both. I think the W900 Kenworth is a much better looking truck, and it has a lot more room than a 379 Peterbilt. I can sit in the driver's seat in a 379 and reach over and open the passenger door, but not in the W900. That tells me that the cab of the Pete is too small. Again, any part you have to buy for a Peterbilt will cost you 50% more, just for the name on it. The damned emblem on the steering wheel is $100.00, just because it says Peterbilt..

That was half arsed. Are you sure it wasn’t in gear.? Before you put a battery in it you should have pulled the valve covers to check the racks weren’t seized and barred the motor over. If it was seized you could pull the injectors easily and put oil/diesel in the bores. You need to watch some bus grease monkey. Detroit’s two strokes are not hard. It’s probably right to walk away at 4K. For that money it should run like a dream.

Na its good you didnt take it cause you got no idea about those motors. You dont just start a detroit after its been sitting. Almost guarantee you that motor would have run away had it cranked over. And you cant just hook those cables up however you want and "try" it. Those motors will also run backwards and cause a whole other series of problems

Those sound fine running backwards, you'll think gauges are acting weird and then you see exhaust coming from the air cleaner, real WTF moment!!!.. There's a reason for that emergency shutoff!!,if dump truck was lugged down near 0 rpms and driver hit clutch too soon there was excellent chance of reversing crank rotation ..Been there Done that!

In typical Bruce Wilson fashion, he electrocutes his help. And if it was me I would get that blue Peterbilt that was near the White Freightliner, but I did see a couple others that might be better projects like the White Cab Over that was covered in tree sap. Personally I would love to find an old 1948 Diamond Rio or maybe an old 1945 Kenworth, or maybe even an old Autocar even an old MACK from the 1940's.

Detroit Diesels are great engines. Most people have no idea how to work on them. I worked on them for 16 years in the Navy so I have a little experience with them. I have never seen a 71 series that did not have a 24 volt system so I was surprised when you tried to start it with 12 volts. From what I could see the engine was not frozen, but, you did not have enough battery for the system. You also did not check the injectors as when they sit for a long period you need to start them with the governor disconnected so you can force the rack to the closed position is they have a stuck injector.

1973 Green Dripper positive ground, reverse polarity fried voltage regulator, pull drain plug on oil pan and check for water. If there, it most likely came from cooling system. The 92 series drippers have 4valve heads, water below port cooling, wet sleeve liners, articulated pistons, and an intercooler. All of this makes for coolant leaks, there is also an oil cooler, but that doesn't cause hydrostatic lock. Looks like a good marine application (anchor). In any case, unless you want to learn way to much about the two stroke joke, and how they turn diesel fuel directly into noise and soil contamination, with no detectable by products, best bet is to back slowly away and then turn and run. I'm sure you can find a better sows ear for "project silk purse". There's lots of parts no longer available, OEM, and a lot of the jobber stuff doesn't fit as good. If you can get it for a song, you can most likely find a good running 8V71 or 92 for next to nada.
