1. Well everything be it regular TVs or Projectors etc gonna end up as e-waste can't be helped and not gonna stop people from purchasing "New" stuff. 2. SONY and Trinnov got dual speaker phantom Center support. Where placing two speakers 1 below and 1 above the screen will create perfect phantom center channel. So yeah companies already implementing suitable workarounds for that. Good to see we are progressing at a fast pace. Seriously Something like KEF or JTR gonna be perfect for such installations. 3. The main thing holding it back is the Price. That will definitely take years to come down.

You can't beat the perfectly flush projected picture , on a wall or screen. Everything is perfectly level, In regards to the axis of the projected image. On the off chance the mini led TV develops some stuck pixels. It's a 'weighty' problem. Though picture quality on a mini led screen is superb with brightness levels and vibrant 'as' colors and great blacks. Though still. Projected picture all the way ......... 📽️ 👍

@@philnicol8072 Micro-LED when designed and installed right is seamless. No burn-in issue on that. Much wider viewing angles. As I said the drawback will always be the price. By the time 146" 160" comes down to being in affordable range projectors will get much much brighter at even lower budget range. Which will enable us to do brighter or larger installs.

I recently talked to a video calibrator, and he had to calibrate a huge wall like that in a movie theater. He said that the center channel was developed by Meyer (I think) and it was mounted on the ceiling and pointed at the screen so that the sound would reflect back towards the viewer. I can't imagine that working well, but he said it was pretty good. On the video side, with that huge video wall, you're getting serious, real HDR that is impossible with projection because it washes itself out. My opinion, that I got form someone on AVS forum, is that an important aspect of the home theater experience is when it looks and feels like a real movie theater. A projector shooting light over your head onto a screen is a huge part of recreating that experience. Anything else is just a big TV. But once a 120" OLED TV is affordable, it'll be small enough to mount a center channel underneath, it'll have far better performance than most projectors, Then I think the market for projectors will significantly shrink. 120" is smallish for a dedicated home theater, but big enough for many people - perhaps myself included.

Really interesting and informative video. Another strange look for micro-LED's is the strange off access look of the individual panel connection points, particularly in darker scenes. Micro-LED's are made up of individual tiles which are then connected together to build the size panel needed. On every one I've seen demonstrated, I can see ever so slight gaps in these connection points in dark or dim scenes. Once constructed, the panels can have a pieced together tile look, which I find distracting, compared to the smooth, uniform picture from a projector.

Your last point is the most important. Of course we’ll see major drop in price, but this will always be a very high end product which will coincide with very high end sound system. The best upgrade we’ve done with ours is installing an acoustic transparent screen allowing LCR, not just center channel behind screen in our 9.4.6 Atmos system. It’s the most realistic presentation I’ve ever experienced short of the one time I viewed a showing at Skywalker Ranch. I would not give up that speaker placement regardless how spectacular the picture.

I went to an LED business and viewed their screens in person. The impression I left with is, that for whatever price you pay, you would always get better quality/performance putting the same amount of money towards a projector/ALR screen. For example, even if I could get 'The Wall' 2k version for 70k, I could get better picture quality and size spending that same amount on a projector/ALR screen. I am also considering the 98" LG OLED tv, but I'm wondering if it is big enough for me or not.

Your environmental point is a very valid one. Size, weight, resources used, the heat generated and energy used in operation, disposal etc - all seem so unnecessary given you can have a high quality image from a far more efficient projector. TV's have their place: in living rooms, up to a certain size. Above that, or in a dedicated home theatre, a projector is the way forward.

For blacked out home theatre rooms projectors will still have the advantage that you can install your center channel and subwoofer array (for a DBA or SBA) directly behind the screen. For living room home theatres or non light optimized rooms in general self emitting tech like micro LED or just huge TVs will always perform better

I know everyone always brings up the center channel, but I've seen a few implementations that mostly overcome it. (Two center speakers above and below that are angled and sum the signal) More complicated, more expensive, but not a bad alternative. But I'm glad you brought up subs. I can't see having subs behind this kind of screen. Rattles and being able to even get to the subs if there's an issue with them (much easier to just take a screen off the wall) seems like pretty big annoyances to me.

They for sure will replace SOME home theater projectors, but projectors as a whole they won’t. Another big factor that I point out to a lot of people that they don’t realize is that a TV is transmissive light and can have a lot of negative side effects for eye health, where a projector image is reflected light which is MUCH easier on the eyes. It’s why we can have a 70” screen at the foot of our bed, it it’s still easy on the eyes for winding down at the end of the day…I’m super happy we did a projector for our bedroom because of that.

Lack of being able to place a center channel and possibly proper Left and Right angle placement might hamper folks. Sony’s new receivers have a mode for 2 Center channels, one ontop and one on the bottom of the display, that may solve this as they iterate on it. It might be a compromise some choose to have a better picture but sound takes a hit. Or if MicroLED becomes popular enough, Sound formats and Receivers will adopt something to help offset the center channel weakness.

Most of those points are very valid. Apart from the one about the screen ratio. These screens absolutely can be configured in whatever ratio you want,.as you even hinted at. It's just a case of tile placement. There's so many benefits to be gained from emissive screen technologies. The biggest being HDR and support for amazing colour depth and realism that projector's can't hope to truly keep near pace with. Unless you have a Christie True RGB laser projector in a pitch black room of course. But even then,. it's a long way out. Emmisive screens with pixel level colour and brightness control (such as OLED, Micro LED and all the technologies that wlare still to come) are the future. Sony have already demonstrated that speaker channels can be positioned and pushed through the screen itself. Even MicroLED could be rendered obsolete by Nano rod LED and even Self Emmisive Quantum Dot screens. They both promise to be far cheaper and thinner (which makes it even easier for a centre channel to be incorporated into it).

Projectors do seem to have hit a bit of a wall lately in terms of innovation. The latest JVCs went crazy high in price and you don't get much more performance. The laser light engines are cool, but contrast doesn't seem to be getting much better and lumens aren't rising much. There is still a big gap between a projector and a standard display. I think my biggest gripe with the screen walls is that I can see the lines between the panels. Maybe okay watching certain content, but watching a movie this would really bother me. I have a feeling with my budget and goals, I'll be using a projector for a while.

Projectors do 160 nits peak whereas as TV 1K nits. 120Hz is a must for a good gaming experience at this screen size with as close as I am to the screen. You'll feel sick otherwise. Same issue with VR. You need a room for a projector. This TV in my living room. It's not dark enough. ALR won't help. I have a projector in my bedroom and understand the light limitations. @@Saturn2888 Hmm, I'm still not sure. I currently am using (right now) a samsung The Frame 85" TV. I play age of empires 3 DE on it all the time and I only get 4k @ 60hz, but the tv has a 'gaming mode' with fast latency, and it is no problem at all, and I sit 8 feet away. I did have an LG 77" Wallpaper tv before (it broke after 13 months), which DID have an incredible OLED picture, better than my current TV. Sony has a demo CEDIA Expo 22 video on you tube where they use the projector with a stewart ALR screen in ambient room light conditions similar to what I have in my living room, and it seemed ok. The main thing is, a screen size of 200" vs 98", which size can also be adjusted easily using preprogramed screen sizes. I could get a stewart rigid glass screen built into a wall and adjust the size as needed. I do miss the amazing OLED wallpaper image though. Tough call.

At the end of the day, it's still just a television. There is still something magical about front projection when showing movies. It gives movies a quality that is just...different. Magic aside, there is also a serious technical flaw in that you can't put speakers behind the screen like you can in front projection. Can't build a baffle wall. Hard to do proper masking. For optimal performance, it just limits you.

The sound is deffo not a big issue just means design it right and thibk about it. Although i will admit makes it extremely difficult to have multiple row seats. Obviously not quite ready for home installation use . . . but “big business” does not care - their use case easily covers the costs of all the drawbacks. However, given the severe competition between Sony, LG, Samsung etc., we can assume these challenges will be updated and efficiencies will be found . . . . The home based market awaits and it’s too big to ignore. So, I expect a few more years rather than 5 or 10, maybe? The problem is - do you invest in a new projector / screen NOW (like me, for example) or … just wait and make what you have go as long as possible? Meanwhile, I just passed through the Toronto International airport yesterday and in a parents and kids waiting lounge was a HUGE MINI- LED tv at approx. 150 inches in a dimly lit room totally open to the main foyer - and it was really . . . awesome! I mean - WOW! Tons of lumen output, bright colours, excellent contrast etc. Maybe not as good as micro, but not bad either. Quite the eye-opener!!

Most people don't want to go through the trouble DIY a screen to fit their living space anyway. The other downsides you mentioned, besides the price, are all dealbreakers - especially the weight and heat dissipation issues. I suspect in a few years this product will be as relevant as 3D or curved TVs are today.

Center channel placement is always a compromise unfortunately. If you aren't fortunate enough to be able to hide a LCR behind a projector screen, you're almost always putting your TV too high or center channel too low. Not to mention the center is the most important so you really want a beefy speaker there. So far I've used doorstops to tilt my center channel up and it certainly helps a good deal.

Ultimately, it's a TV. At this time, with costs up to $200 grand, they're basically immaterial for almost all home theater enthusiasts, but even if they come down in price they won't be able to match the price/size performance of a projector. You can get an extremely satisfying image for far below $10 grand. For me, aside from massive price, it's just the sheer impracticality of huge TV's that stand out. Just getting a 100 inch TV into the room is a chore, getting it mounted is a chore, and if it breaks and you have to ship it back it's a nightmare. Picture-quality wise, TV's will probably retain their edge on contrast, but... contrast at a smaller size vs perfectly decent contrast at a huge size, well, for HT huge size wins. Giant video walls are a very cool technology and I can see use cases that are great, but home theater is a pretty marginal one for now.

Of course big micro-LED screens will be a viable home theater option . . . someday. Yes, it's years and years off. But, as we know, these screens are modular pieces assembled together (and done so well enough that you can't see the seams). Getting the pieces into a home theater space isn't a problem. And neither is the center channel issue. Add one speaker above the screen and another below. Your ears won't know the difference. It might still be more expensive than a projector setup and will likely require professional installation. But those who can afford it will be very happy.

I know this is supposed to be only about Home Theater and really, the Niche customer is going to want this for their Home Theater but like he said in the video, too many major setup issues to make this a deal maker and skip the projector purchase for the Home Theater. Regardless, I feel that with Ultra Short Throw projector prices getting lower, the average consumer will start considering projection over a flat panel TV. With TVs getting more and more glarey. Projectors getting deeper and deeper blacks. Projectors supporting HDR better as technology improves. The average consumer would struggle fitting a 98"+ Flat Panel TV through the front door and into a truck without panicking about if it gets a scratch during the move or someone drops the heavy tv while carefully getting it into the new house without having to pay for a crew of movers to do it for them. I mean a college kid can get an Ultra Short Throw projector into their Dorm without issue, much less a small apartment. Once we get ALR screens to drop in price significantly with the cost of Ultra Short Throw projectors already going down, there is going to be a shift. No need to run wires up the wall, no need to put wires inside of the wall, no need to necessarily put holes in the wall to hang up a screen either. Projection has overcome so many "hurdles" for the average consumer already with much lower input lag, bright and accurate colors, etc, etc. Soon bedroom TVs will go away in favor of Ultra Short Throw projection. It's just a matter of time. There will always be a niche market of Flat Panel TV fans, and that's fine, but the standard may very well become projection for the average consumer after all.

Music equipment high end tends to hold value better and you can make upgrades over time to some pieces giving you decades of longevity. TV's basically become worthless over time as technology evolved to replace them with latest versions. I can get a whole movie theater set up with an awesome high end projector and audio with design for about 60,000. It would just be used for home theater room as I already have other tv's for day watching and dedicated music room for listening to singers etc. Maybe in 5 years to 7 years the tech comes way down in price and more mass adoption.
