The materials used in the anode and cathode set the voltage, the electrolyte and surface area set the current. Carbon and Magnesium are about as good as you can get. Here is the Galvanic table - the voltage you get from your battery is the difference between the two numbers shown for the materials - graphite (carbon) 0.2 - Magnesium -1.6, so the voltage could be as much as -1.8v en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvani...

Copper and Lead have almost the same electronegativty, so the expectation is much less voltage than with Magnesium. Zinc, Aluminium and Titanium should be better but still lower than magnesium. Although Al and Ti tend to passivate under certain electrolytes. Flipping polarity, where the Copper gets used up, you could use Carbon, Platinum or Gold as well. Using Platinum and Zinc or Carbon and Copper should give a comparable or higher voltage to Copper and Magnesium.

As long as the lead does not dissolve over nite like my magnesium strips do, I would not mind making 4 cells of copper and lead to replace the magnesium strip cell.

Yes, the magnesium doesn't last long. It is quite hard to come across lead nowadays as many of the products have changed to some other metal due to the health issues. It used to be easy to collect a few weights around the tyre change depots, but they don't use lead any more for the balance weights.

I wonder, was that a steel rod on the lead weight? It seemed to be in the tea, making it the metal being measured. Carbon/lead lasted for 5 years with no degradation on an LED flasher, copper/lead should be more than 0.3V y'see Still, thanks for running the test!

Interesting point, but I wasn't 100% sure that you were right, so I ran a test and got results I didn't expect. I will be interested to hear you take on what happened with the magnesium 🤔. The actual voltage is a product of the different values the metals have on the galvanic table. The one I was running with "lime juice" was eating the electrodes very quickly. With magnesium strips it reacted so fast it foamed up out of the container. Zinc electrodes were less reactive but still only lasted a day. This lump of lead would probably last a few weeks 👍👍

I thought the lead would have worked. Then that is probably wishful thinking because lots of batteries use lead. Have you tried using nickel? I thought of nickel as we have nickel-metal hydride batteries. 👌👍👍

With enough cells in series to build up the voltage the copper/lead would probably work. As for nickel, that gives me an interesting side thought/rabbit hole 🤔 I don't know how I would identify nickel, I don't even know for certain that the copper I use is copper or the zinc I use is zinc, or for that matter if the lead was lead. The only reason I believe I have magnesium is because that is what I ordered. Without being a chemist, I don't know how I could be sure of any of the materials I have used. In fact many of the items that I have assumed to be stainless steel could well be nickel plated as that is used for the same purpose. From memory, stainless steel would be using chromium. I have just checked and stainless steel can contain chromium and/or nickel 🤔🤔 I said it was a rabbit hole.

Have you tried carbon, I have tried quite a few things but not carbon, or silver ect 👍

Yes, I have used carbon quite often, just stripping the centre rod out of zinc carbon AA batteries and quite often using the zinc case as the other electrode.
