To be honest I don’t think putting Sonic in a relationship will slow him down he can still be adventurous while having someone to support him on the side

I can see a relationship between Sonic and Amy working out as long as Sonic isn't restricted of his adventuring ways and Amy knows that. You can be in a romantically intimate relationship with someone without having to sacrifice too much of yourself and I believe Amy can recognize that Sonic being free spirited will not easily settle down. I don't think Sonic should be void of romance as long as it doesn't take a priority. After all, look at Sonic's friendships throughout the series.

Sonic's stance on romance- no, on relationships in general, is that he refuses to be tied down. Even by friends. The way Sonic & Tails met is by Tails just following him one day, and Sonic just let him but ultimately didn't care. Tails became Sonic's best friend and brother by following him around everywhere and proving that he can keep up with Sonic's speed, not slow him down. Same applies to Sonic & Amy. The reason Sonic runs from Amy is because he doesn't want to be tied down by a romantic relationship, all he wants is to run free in search of adventure. But what Amy wants isn't to tie him down, Amy has a strong desire for adventure, excitement and thrills just like he does. Amy's passion for Sonic is very strong and she's very open about it, and these feelings are very overwhelming for Sonic, who isn't used to expressing such strong feelings himself and he doesn't know how to deal with them. Amy chases after Sonic, not to tie him down and force him into marriage, but to join his adventures and be part of his life. Not only that, but Amy's goal from the end of her story in Sonic Adventure is to be strong and independent enough to impress Sonic and make him pursue her. She has no desire to change him into someone he's not, because she loves Sonic for Sonic, and simply wants to be part of his life and have her love reciprocated. Ultimately, Sonic is the type of person who would have no real friends or connections to anyone, if not for Tails & Amy wanting so badly to follow him wherever he goes and be part of his life. Tails and Amy are Sonic's best friends because they follow and support his freedom rather than impede it, and this is what causes Sonic to eventually come around. It took a few games before Sonic & Tails officially became brothers, and something similar is happening between Sonic & Amy. Amy is Sonic's Minnie Mouse, but a traditional relationship can never work for Sonic. But Amy doesn't want a traditional relationship either... Amy Rose is the answer to the question of what a romantic relationship even looks like for someone as free and unbound as Sonic.

They’ve definitely been leaning more into the Sonamy element the past decade or so, especially with Frontiers, and I could see that becoming more explicit over time of received well.

I honestly think it would work. I would picture Sonic having to do his hero thing and Amy would either understand and let him go or join him.

I'm not a fan of everyone's sentiment that being in a relationship "Slows you down" or that it keeps you from being yourself. If both partners understand each other, it's an opportunity for growth and instead of looking at the rest of your life alone, you've got someone to share it with. I see potential for Sonic and Amy to have a good dynamic without being over the top or weird.

100% agree I said it before and I’ll say it again. I see Sonic and Amy as being best friends with crushes on each other. Them being together or not doesn’t matter to me because at the end of it they’ll always be best friends and have a long lasting bond. Tbf the reason why people say that he’ll be tied down to a relationship is that not everyone likes going on adventures like he does,he can marry someone but that doesn’t always mean that they’ll be adventurous like he is,meaning that he’ll have to deal with losing his adventures and accepting that those days are over which he doesn’t want

count on SEGA to be inconsistent as all hell. Ian Flynn (The main comic writer for IDW's sonic stories) is helping with the games and is also a sonamy shipper so I bet he'll keep teasing us with stuff like that.

You can read the official analysis/explanation of Sonic and Amy's dynamic at the end of an episode of Kabegami Cover Story. It says the unclearness of Sonic's feelings for Amy that drives the audience's curiosity is what makes their dynamic attractive. I think episode 52 of the Japanese Sonic X is the best example of this.

To be honest. I feel like a Sonic and Amy relationship would be a lot like Goku and ChiChi. Except she'd be a lot more involved. She's is or was the leader of the resistance. Actually, it seems when Sonic disappears, she steps up to the plate.

Honestly, although I love shipping (and I have a real soft spot for SonAmy), I think the current approach SEGA is taking is the perfect compromise. Simply put, it would be bad for business to have sonic being a 100% cannon relationship. Sure it’s fine for that to happen in spin offs, like the Archie comics or Sonic Boom (since as we see those versions of sonic data around quite a bit). However in the main canon, considering how many different ships exist, not to mention a very large might be able to just don’t want someone to be in any romantic relationship, The best approach is to hint that there could be chemistry but to never see it taken to its fullest. Simply put, it’s OK to tease the idea, but in the main canon it’s probably for the best to leave romance to the fanfictions. (And again I’m speaking of someone who is very much into that kind of stuff. I’m just saying from an objective point of view, their current approach is the best compromise.) Plus, this is just a personal note, Half the fun of shipping Sonic characters is the “will they, won’t they“. Maybe I’m just a hopeless romantic, but it’s fun to analyze interactions between two characters with chemistry and hypothesize about whether or not they could work out as a pair. We would lose that element if Sega said “oh yeah these two are dating we just never get to see it“.

Thank you for letting me spectate with you if our favorite blue hedgehog could have a girlfriend. I don't know if I'm wrong or not here, so feel free to correct me if I am, but I've seen Sonic date six different girls in the Archie Comics. When I first saw and heard about this, I was honestly heartbroken. Anyways, onto something more uplifting. My best friend is probably the biggest SonAmy fan I know, so she really wants this ship to be canon. However, I think the reason that Sonic Team is shying away from the idea is because of how ferocious people will get if they dare to give Sonic a girlfriend. To me, the idea is harmless to the series because it offers more character connections while still having the adventure feel that Sonic games generally go for. I'm not big into shipping and romance myself, so I hardly ever think about doing it myself, however I think that certain ships are completely harmless to the series, and offer more compelling story ideas. But, I understand why they don't feel obligated to go that far since this is a very controversial topic in a cartoon series like this. It might happen later down the line, but I'm not saying it's a "for sure" thing.

Weather or not Sonic will ever be in a romantic relationship... that's supposed to be a question that doesn't have a canon answer. At least that's what I see as Sega's intention. Another thing in mind is what's intriguing about Sonic's dynamic with Amy that make people ship them? Which I think ties to Sega's intent. There's some teasing but that's it and really, that's good enough for many.

It would obviously have to be Amy. Elise is a throwaway character from the worst Sonic game ever. I think it should happen if the majority of fans want it, and not happen if they don't. Honestly I'm not really sure how many Japanese Sonic fans there are, and the Japanese fans would probably be the ones who have Sega's ear. I once read that when the Sega Saturn was a top selling console in Japan, many of the Japanese Sega fans had no clue who Sonic even was. I'm betting Sally Acorn isn't even a thing in Japan, so there probably aren't any shipping arguements going on over there. Amy likely has no competition for the girlfriend spot in the Japanese fandom.

Fictional Characters are relationships? Yes when I was a teen I used to think about Pokemon relationships and Legend of Zelda relationships. So there are loads of fan fiction around this sort of stuff. Sonic relationships are a mix of different versions of Sonic from the 90s Cartoons to the Games to the recent Sonic series.

In my opinion, I think of it as a sort of a platonic relationship, meaning they both don’t share any romantic interests, but it’s still more than just a simple friendship. After all, Amy *was* created to be Sonic’s love interest. But as we see in Sonic Frontiers, which is supposed to be the moment where everyone improves on themselves, we see Amy accepting the fact that she would want to share her love through the entire universe that transcends time itself instead of clinging onto one person. After all, it does fit into some of the rules for a platonic relationship, such as: -They establish boundaries -They both are respectful to one another -They don’t have any date-like hangouts (I think) -They don’t make each other jealous (not intentionally, but they do tease with each other a lot in a playful manner) -They plan vacations for everyone instead of just them two All in all, while Sonic in the past wasn’t open about his feelings since he’s an introvert who wants to seek adventure, Amy was openly honest and is a person who carefully reads body signatures. But now they’ve matured and while Sonic is rather the same, albeit he takes things more seriously now, Amy realizes that her obsession with Sonic is not what he wants and instead focuses her love on the entire world. It’s a “save one to destroy millions or destroy one to save millions” type of situation with Amy.

I agree with you as well. I doubt Sonic would ever be in a relationship with anybody, not even Amy. And I don't know if it would ever become an option in a game to pursue after Amy in a romantic way because Sonic games are action oriented and never really romantic (maybe Sonic 06 is an exception). But I think it would be better for the games if he just isn't in a relationship. It opens more doors for possibilities if he isn't in any. I don’t Think that the “Dating” stuff in Unleashed is supposed to Connect to Black Knight, I don’t Think the writer Saw a little detail from Unleashed and put that in the story, i Think maekawa was more focused on making the story, than paying attention to small details from Unleashed. In the japanese version of Sonic Battle,Sonic calls Amy his girlfriend in the conversation between Sonic and Rouge. Amy also calls Sonic her boyfriend. That means they are already in a more platonic conservative relationship. They just can't go beyond. Also Sonic X still exists that Sonic Team produced and TMS made, and in there Sonamy is cannon. Episode 52 and episode 76-77 are more than enough proof but there are still tons of hints in almost every episode they interact at least once.

Listen, I’ve been a SonAmy fan for nearly two decades, it is a ship near and dear to my heart. But do I NEED them to be IN a relationship? Nah, not really. With the IDW comics being canon and now with Frontiers, I think we’re in the best spot we can kinda hope for. Because he DOES like her, he really does. They have mutuals feelings for each other, their relationship right now is stronger than ever and I feel blessed by that. Back in the 2000s, this growth seemed unlikely. Don’t get me started on the overused cliche statements that kinda reeks of some odd kind of misogyny, that tends to imply being with a girl slows you down, such as; “Sonic will never settle down.” - Ok cool, Amy clearly doesn’t want him to. She loves adventures as well and doesn’t want to change Sonic’s way of life, she’s literally told him that. Which IS where Sonic started to act different around her. A shift was made after that comment. He asks her along on missions, doesn’t run from her, doesn’t mind her hugs, etc. I am content with this state. I just hope we’ll continue to walk this path, because I’m enjoying the journey.

I genuinely think that Sonic might be cautious about getting into a relationship in general: 1. He might not want to endanger a person he is with. 2. He might not want this person to adapt to his lifestyle and constant running. 3. He might have severe commitment issues or even some self-esteem issues when it comes to romantic relationship. He is smug, but he does get embarrassed when he gets complimented by someone, especially someone like Amy, who sees him as the literal best person/creature in the whole universe. I also think that he wants Amy to believe in herself and be more self-sufficient. She heavily relied on him until she managed to do her own thing in SADX. The theme then continued further and got reduced heavily in Sonic 06. I think him running away or getting 'uncomfortable' with her flirting or else for more reasons than him just disliking Amy. There were many of situations, even in Sonic Frontiers, when he seemed genuinely supportive and caring of Amy. Heck, he even collects hearts to help her out. If you think of Sonic as a whole personality, he really does not look like a person who can pursue himself as a romantic interest. There's a high possibility that he might just not see himself like this at all too.
