Hey Matt! Long time subscriber. Might have a pretty good remedy going forward to reduce the risk of blowing out another shock. In the Air Force when we ship vehicles with large "balloony" tires/soft suspensions on aircraft, we use what we call "sleeper shoring". Basically we build stacks of wood (usually 8" x 8" square) from the ground/aircraft floor up to the frame of the vehicle. Height will depend on vehicle and placement of the stacks. Usually 2 stacks for either side in the front and 2 stacks for either side in the rear. Then just strap down the stacks in place. The purpose of sleeper shoring is to reduce the bouncing of the vehicle during turbulence so that the tie down chains don't slap or risk breaking. A by-product of the sleeper shoring in your case would reduce or eliminate the shock travel on the Scorpion or other vehicles depending on how high you build the stack of wood. Hope this helps!

there is a company that makes an aftermarket plug that you do not need to drop the oilpan to put it in for the dipstick. i believe it is steel or aluminum.

Yes the original one is from Strictly Diesel, aluminum. It's quite pricey, there are some others that have made them for cheaper since, but don't know how well those ones work.

The blown ORI shock makes sense with lots of miles and probably a less than half-loaded trailer, meaning trailer leaf springs bounce more than work. When transporting monster trucks, they bleed all the nitrogen down, let it sit on the oil, and then tie them down. Better luck with the truck. It’s a common problem on those trucks to have an oil pan dipstick leak, so much so there are aftermarket products to solve it.

I don’t know why, but these kinds of build series and thrashing until the day you leave is what I love to watch. I do it for work on occasion and it’s very rewarding when you finally reach the finish line. This ford resurrection has been my favorite series to watch in awhile. The footage of your travels in the truck was awesome as well❤

This is so relatable. Years ago we were in our old Ecoboost F150 going through Utah towing a travel trailer. That truck liked to heat up, and I was at my wits end with all of the hills, false summits, etc. At one point we were doing 15 mph uphill, with the heat on, in 100 degree weather. Very stressful. I feel your pain, Matt.

Matt, I believe using wheel/tire tie down straps are best for trailering your off-road vehicle! It allows your suspension & shocks to move freely & adjust. Now tying down & suppressing the suspension & shocks puts & increases the pressure inside the shocks. Now with that added pressure, then you are going up in elevation from Tennessee to Utah. The pressure increases even more inside the shock, to the point it starts to leak.

Love the towing videos!! I always strap my jeeps down by the axles. The suspension definitely gets beat up on a trailer, but tieing down by the frame is worse! Just going to load everything up in the vehicles suspension and its still taking the impacts from the trailer. Best to leave the vehicle suspension working so it can do its own thing, but trailer miles are hard miles! Always check your suspension/steeing nut/bolts before your go offroading or drag racing fresh of a trailer!

Dipstick seal leak/failure is a well known problem on at least the 7.3 PS. Piss poor design on the seal. Oil pan and factory replacement fix means pulling engine. Can be done otherwise but extremely difficult and problematic to get it right. There are other fixes for just the dipstick leak but if the problem is a rusted out oil pan than replacement is pretty much required. Don't get me wrong. I am a die hard 7.3 PS supporter. Have owned 2 and still have a 2002 as a farm truck. Also have a newer dually for hauling a very heavy truck camper and jeep on a flatbed. Dually for capacity, stability and redundancy in case of tire failure. Good luck and thanks for sharing.

The reason it wasn’t “building boost” is because it was in park, when there’s no load it won’t build boost Becuase there’s no resistance. And don’t worry about the egts, powerstrokes like to run hot and only over 2000 would there be any real issues.

I never strap down to the chassis, i always tie down to the axle. No matter how hard you tie down the suspension its still gonna have some more compression in it when bouncing which shock loads your straps/chains every time you hit a bump which will eventually fatigue them to failure. When chaining to the axle the only thing you are compressing is your tires which have very little spring action.

What an ordeal. I think there was already damage to the shock seal. You gotta figure those shocks are seeing a lot higher shaft speeds when offroad. On the trailer the shaft speeds should be a lot lower. Unless I'm missing something and lower speeds are somehow worse. Maybe you could get some pipe or tube and notch it along the length so it fits over the shafts. Then use ratchet straps (or suck down winch for front) to pull the body down so it rests on the tubes. That should stop the motion.

Could you use a false shock for travel? Just put a metal tube in the spot of the coilover with heims. Or would that be too stiff?

Oil coming out of the dipstick tube should mean that the crankcase is pressurized, so either there is a lot of blow-by through the piston rings, or the crankcase ventilation is insufficient. Next time leave the oil cap off to relieve some of the crankcase pressure.
