Great content. No need to panic. We lose a little access but that can be obtained with a little work. Also, when Brexit settles, there still could be some negotiations to be had about securing better access to the European market. It's still fluid.

BTW, the South African passport also known as "green mamba' (snake species) is worthless piece of paper.

I mean Andrew made the same point as you have made in one of his recent videos. I am just intrigued to know why you both think that this is the likelihood. Also UK expats who decide to return to the UK to become residents after living and working overseas, have to pay tax to the UK government on the money they earned abroad.

As I understand, UK passport holders still have freedom of movement to Ireland, so we could get Irish residency and eventually an EU passport through acquiring citizenship by long residence. I also understand some politicians have proposals for freedom of movement between Canada, UK, NZ, and Australia, but I think covid will set that back a few years.

Andrew, suggest you do a video on the other side of the coin - on how due to Brexit, the Irish passport will become the most powerful in the world. Especially now when most realise they made enough money and can work remotely. In past it was just having a company in UAE or Ireland, now is more about lifetime change and avoid growing taxes (especially in properties) and general socialism.

British passport holders can still establish themselves in an EU country of their choice, exercise treaty rights potentially leading to Permanent Residence and maybe citizenship until the end of the transition period set to end on 31st December 2020. However, in light of the coronavirus situation this will probably be extended.

As it stands, yes we can still exercise treaty rights and live in an EU country. But do you really think the chances of getting Permanent Residence is high for Brits still moving to an EU country? I mean it has been strongly suggested that only EU citizens that have lived in the UK for 5 years or more will be allowed to remain in the UK once the transition period is over. I would imagine that the same rule would be reciprocated for Brits living in an EU country.
@rubensnogueira5838
@rubensnogueira5838 4 жыл бұрын
@@stuarth1996 Brexit brought that bad atmosphere for EU citizens in the UK, but since the official position is "we want you to stay", legislation is supposed to protect them (us) and allow residence for the next 5 years via pre-settled status. They cannot risk harming the Brits abroad by throwing out EU citizens all of a sudden.
@radicaledwards3449
@radicaledwards3449 4 жыл бұрын
Bullshit, since the beginning of the transitional period, 31.1.20, British citizens cannot be considered EU citizens and thus are not entitled to residence in the EU and must go through the same procedure as any 3rd country in the world for residence, but are free to enter the and leave at will until 2021.

Excellent video and precisely on point. All that is likely to happen is that us Brits will no longer have freedom of movement within EU countries, however we will still have visa free access to EU countries. This will probably mean that we will be allowed to visit these countries for 3 months in a row before we have to leave. But as you have said, Brits wanting to live in a EU country full time and become a resident there, will always still have the option of obtaining residence visas. In fact, there is still a very small chance that the UK might have a "Soft Brexit", which could possibly mean that we still retain freedom of movement within the EU. However, this is a small possibility as our Prime Minister Boris, really prefers the Hard Brexit option. As for British expats and tax, Brits currently don't have to pay tax to the UK government on money earned abroad, when living and working overseas. However, if they decide to return to the UK and become resident there, then they have to pay tax on the earnings they earned overseas.

British Overseas Citizens, British Subjects, British Protected Persons, British National Overseas are eventually disappear in time when holders die. (Not transferable) BNO and BOC could become British citizens if they have residency permits and to become stateless, and if Hong Kong political environment continue deteriorating and civil unrest approach 2047. Please stop using the term "expat" and use "immigrant" instead - stop sugar coating words. Also, you don't talk about average people in the UK, you talk about rich people which is less than 5% of the UK population. I'm average or below average and I'm British-English with roots in Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia (Norway and Sweden specifically). I'm one generation out of luck for an Irish passport (my dad can get one but I can't) because two or more of my 2nd great grandparents came from Ireland. However I'm at least three or four generations out of luck (possibly even more than four) for a passport in Norway or Sweden because two or more of my 2nd or 3rd great grandparents came from Norway or Sweden on my dad's side because he's Irish, Scottish and Scandinavian by origin. Personally, I'd want to get the Irish citizenship or citizenship in Sweden because I feel like Scandinavian and Irish citizenship is more powerful than British citizenship in today's age... Brexit is a con and always will be a con - unless you're rich, it's ridiculous tbh. But hey at least Sweden, Norway and Denmark have relatively easy work permit systems that take no more than 30 days at max compared to Spain's up to 8 months. Haha. Sweden and Norway are superior to Spain when it comes to living standards and wages.
