All you need to do is be your own lsd by using your other foot to apply the breaks haha. I have taken my beater 1991 front wheel drive Nissan Maxima with no traction control or abs everywhere and on very steep hills and haven't gotten stuck. Nothing beats a real automatic transmission and v6 engine. I can take off from dirt hills without ever spinning the wheels. Everyone just stares as their piece of garbage cvt's with low profile wheels just spin all day long 😂

Tommy, If you are trying to #shame Toyota into bringing a cheap, genuine 4X4 to our market by doing videos like this then you are doing an excellent job. May I suggest something priced like a FJ but with a design budget including larger windows. If a new model is too much fuss for TMC then the 2 door Prado will do quite nicely.

2-wheel drive = 1 wheel drive. AWD without lockers = 1 wheel drive with a small bonus. permanent AWD with center diff-lock or 4wd = 2 wheel drive. Same with rear lockers = 3 wheel drive. 4wd with all center, rear and front lockers = 4WD.

A Peugeot 2008 or 3008 with grip control can make it further. They're front wheel drive and Peugeot's grip control is quite amazing actually. It uses the 2 front wheels to the max and has sand and rocks and snow mode. It actually performs really well. So actually you maybe don't need awd but no one else does grip control other than Peugeot and Citroen for you to test a terrain control front wheel drive car in the US.

I thought the same thing, but at least with road cars, they are fine. I've driven their latest CVTs and unless someone told you, you would have no idea. Modern CVTs are in all cars in this price point/segment, even experienced drivers can't tell they are CVTs anymore with the shift programming they have. I doubt all of them would use them if they are all destined to suck, especially companies like Honda, Toyota, Hyundai/KIA.

Those old Golfs (like all old cars) have good ground clearance. New cars, even crossovers, have very small ground clearance. This Toyota for example is barely over 14 cm ground clearance. That's very low to the ground, you can barely get over a sidewalk curb without hitting the front bumper.

Hyundai Venue would be interesting in same situation since it can be had with a manual transmission and 8' ground clearance (less chance of bottoming-out with momentum). Also Lexus 250H would return surprising results....if I was Lexus, I"d jump on this one, since it'll be a great way to demonstrate ability of rear hybrid drive.

I suspect this is going to end up as one of Toyota's extinct vehicles. The styling is not going to age well, it's not very practical, and that engine sounds like something that would be right at home in 2005. I suspect AWD would price it too close to the lower trimmed RAV4, and negate anyone from even considering this (C)rappy practicality (H)orribly aging (R)ubbish offroad Crossover.

Omg I just dealt with this. However it was a really steep hill loose soil. My suv is fwd. we just packed up from camping. I told the wife this will be the difficult hill. Problem was I lost track of when the hill was coming up. Sue to lots of hills. So I was too close to another vehicle that slowed down in the hill. If I was able to use my momentum, I would not have been stuck. One of my pals gave me a slight push with his hands and we were free. I’m sure I could have turn off traction control. Or have the whole line of us back up and allow me room to get back up to speed. But from a dead stop it’s a pain. Fed is capable but not always. Tread of tire helps too.

In my country the C-HR is available with AWD and is a very popular vehicle, sadly even with AWD it sucks off road, it has no ground clearance, no good angles, and the CVT ruins the AWD traction, I had to tow my friend's C-HR from a simple camping trail. IF I went small like this thing I would get a trailblazer. The trailblazer made it up that same hill.

If you want more space just put the back seats down. This is not a family car to have kids in or in-laws, more of a single driver doing work around the city.

If it was a hybrid would have had made it. Hybrids has a plenty of torque from 0 rpm and the eCVT is way better with better tc set up. Driving axles not so important. Uphill obviously rwd or awd are way better.

You can just tell that this Toyota CHR was designed for Scion Millennial Yuppie cowards. It can’t even keep up with the AWD Honda HRV, Subaru Crossstrek, and Hyundai Kona. The Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Venue, and Nissan Juke could probably embarrass the Toyota CHR

Rav4 adventure? Mm I would say that Hybrid you reviewed last year was better. At least you did not tell them to buy a Rav4 TRD. LOL. That is what makes you legit in my book. You are aware of what is what. This C-HR is fine as a commuter but no, not ideal for any of this stuff. More aggressive tires help a little, but even with that aid, the CVT is going to kill its performance.

I have a 4wd patriot for way less than that and it works fine on and off road. Some of it is the driver too lol.

My Mom bought a 2020 CHR and last winter Toyota had a recall on the block heater. They asked people to come in so service can disconnect the block heat. It was -35 C when they told people in Winnipeg to stop using the block heater. Today Toyota has not replaced the block heater and winter is coming. I am done with Toyota and am telling people Toyota has nose dived in quality and are not fixing warranty issues in an appropriate time frame. I will never buy Toyota. Bought a new 2022 Mazda CX 5 GT Sport and I am very happy with it. Toyota is terrible.

This was painful to watch...kinda wish they would give us the hybrid version, pretty sure that it comes with e-AWD; I understand that it doesn't do a HELL of a lot, but it would get up that friggin' hill. Thoughts?
