My wee European trip continues in Estonia with a train ride from Tallinn to Paldiski and a long walk out to the Pakri Lighthouse. I have wanted to come here ever since seeing it on a Bald and Bankrupt video, but when Ben visited, it was all closed up - will I have a bit more luck???
Filmed in Estonia on Saturday 7th May 2022.
Part one of a two-part visit to Estonia and Finland.

Those of you who are interested - Paldiski's original name is Rågervik which comes from Swedish. Swedes inhabited a large part of Estonia's coastal areas and islands from the early medieval times (archaeologist now believe that even long before that) right up until WWII and Soviet occupation that forced them to find refuge in Sweden. The nearby Pakri islands (Rågöarna in Swedish) were used as a bombing target for military excercises during the Soviet occupation. The population of Paldiski, like many towns and regions of Northern Estonia, was replaced and flooded with migrants (civilian colonialism) from the Soviet Union, mostly Russians. Russians still remain as the majority of the town of Paldiski. Also, we are a Finnic nation (linguistically, culturally and genetically, like Finland). Baltic is just a geopolitical term that was put into use by our former colonists Germans and later Russians and it doesn't really mean anything.

Another lighthouse! I love lighthouses. My only problem is when you get to the top it's at the top. I made myself look and had to hang on to my chair. Heights are definitely not my forte. Yes Steve and when we did it there was a former keeper at the top so you could get lots of info from him. Pretty good views as you are on top of a cliff. It’s also a decent spot for whale and dolphin watching. Hopefully the cafe will be open after all the Covid nonsense. I’m sure they have a website.

You should definitely visit Mohni island one day. It's about an hour or two from Tallinn in Lahemaa National Park. I don't think you can get into the light house but maybe the people there will let you as a special tourist. The whole Pärispea peninsula is really interesting with its USSR military background: abandoned military buildings, a village that used to boom during the Soviet times and a factory complex turned into a restaurant, a museum and a weird looking theatre.

I had the pleasure of living in Paldiski in 1995 (and other occasions) many of the Russian murals and other Soviet era items were still up with many more Soviet barrack blocks since demolished. I am sure the locals were glad to see the eventual change but for a Brit it was interesting to see before its demise. Also on the way to the lighthouse is a concrete submarine!

I was there a few years back and it was £7 to climb to the top which I moaned like hell about but it was so worth it for the views but also the guide who was happy to tell the real stories once the tourists had left. There's also Mull of Galloway lighthouse which still sounds their foghorns on certain occasions but you can find out when by contacting them. They're pretty responsive on FB. Been trying to take a trip down there myself for the last 2 years but covid put an end to that so hopefully soon.

As a child I couldn’t make it all the way to the top of Portland Bill light house because of vertigo, it’s amazing how much those buildings sway 😅. As an adult I made my wife climb the tower at Durham Cathedral, even though she told me that I wouldn’t like it (it did look very high from the ground) we got to the top with very wobbly legs, went through the little door to the outside and I had to lay down. There’s no way I could’ve walked around the balcony on the light house.

Were you going to read the Patron's names in an Estonian accent? Fun video, as always. Adventurizing, Bald style. Were you wearing white Chuck Taylors?

@@steve-marsh I know. You'd think Ben would have invested in some Wellies or hiking boots by now lol. The reference to Patrons' names is from another channel. He is Estonian, and reads all new Patrons' names in Estonian. He essentially butchers their names and it's quite funny.

I like at the 5:00 it is a bushwacking wee stop disguised as looking at artwork. Who you trying to fool. Just as I'm getting used to Scotland, boom, where we are in Estonia. Hello Google Maps, where is Estonia. Dude, I'd stay a hemisphere away from there, especially looking at you know who is across the boarder to the East! Nice video though, looks like a nice town, not too crowded. I'd hope someone with a car at the lighthouse would have gave you a ride back or something. Stay Cool, hanging out for part 2.
