Will the New Capra UTB18 Reignite Mini Class?

Our Axial Capra UTB18 review! It is finally on Australian shores! 3 months late is better than never, right?
So, in the comp crawling scene, Mini has been a dwindling class. Some wonder if its simply because the Losi MRC axle supply has dried up globally - axles on which so many Minis are based!
And then along comes the UTB18. Wow. It's not quite legal in the *RCCA ruleset, with a wheelbase that is just 2mm too long. Still, that's an easy fix. And then what about the rest of it? Will this be a decent platform on which to build a competition-level Mini crawler? I sure hope so. As always, there's one great way to find out...
Let's test!
Two Corrections:
1. The Capra UTB18 is actually Mini legal. Wheelbase is 9" exactly and all other numbers are within the rules! So, it's ready to go! Now we just need to fix the CoG and get some overdrive happening!
2. I've been saying "Nationals" in recent videos. I seem to have missed that this comp is called East Coast Crawl Fest - no mention of 'nationals' there at all! ...Well, Road to ECCF doesn't have the same ring to it as 'Road to Nationals', but there you have it. Thanks Joel for picking that up and letting me know. My apologies for using the wrong name these past few weeks!

You know, you might be onto something here. that UTB18 might be just the thing to light the fires in the mini class and bring new attention to that small but amazing niche of the crawling community. Also, could you possibly have picked a better spot to showcase these cars? My goodness that's a lovely place to spend your time, thank you for sharing it with all of us.

@@RCTNT Wow,, this little thig is a beast. It blew through my 1/10 scale course in the back yard like a pro. I have 3 - 1/10 trucks that find course challenging. Hard to figure first upgrade. Really just needs a little weight in front. Maybe the Lizard or 1080 ESC. Also been eyeballing those RC4WD pins, but stock tires are pretty good. Thanks again for the videos.

@anyhonyfernandez glad you like it! I've got a lot of material on the UTB18 here, it's a worthy rig: I've designed a comp chassis for it that cuts a lot weight from it, investigated the best upgrades for crawling, found a good budget brushless motor for it, tested both injora and rc4wd pins, and more. Check out how everything went before you buy things - see my UTB18 playlist on the channel here: Axial Capra UTB18: kzfaq.info/sun/PLP6qQhzesLdoE_I3_tr3NDX11gC-ytJ2J

This is one of the best videos I’ve seen about the Utb18. I too just got one recently & I really like it. It put a like riser on the upper rear link & it see to help it. I put a 3d printer on on it to save rear weight. Out of the box it has 56/44 front bias.

Man your mini made it look easy! What a killer rig and good driving with it. Some over or underdrive in the baby Capra and maybe some better steering angle would close that point gap for sure. Slower gearing or motor would help too I imagine. Course 2 really highlighted the differences but also showed a ton of potential for the UTB. I'm sure you have a few videos in the pipe for this little truck but seeing it along the way will be fun! I am admittedly curious how your mini compares to something like a Class2 truck or even class 3 given it has a buggy-ish style to it. Great work Craig! Those gates looked like a lot of fun and pretty challenging 😁

Thanks Andy. Marc Smith in WA built this mini some years ago now. I bought it from the guy he sold it to. I haven't changed much, though I did fiddle with steering, battery mount, body width and have replaced all electronics. Overall it's still the car he built and its a beauty! The UTB18 definitely has potential. Needs the body lowered, there's a lot of gain to be found with better CoG. I want a smoother, more powerful motor that's geared lower and runs 3s. Stronger, faster steering servo and uni axles to grant better steering angle. Overdrive/underdrive front/rear. Better tires. All the stuff you said with a few more things, basically! A properly setup p/scale (roughly C2 equiv.) will destroy the best mini in most cases. However, the mini will hold its own against most modified 1/10 RTR crawlers, except where longer wheelbase may be needed for some steep and gnarley ascents. Otherwise, mini will prevail, I'd expect. (An upcoming video will see the JLU in Scale-1 (~C1) setup tackle these same two courses, so that'll give you an idea of how they compare too).

I've installed a hobbywing 1080 esc and a 35kg servo and use a 3s 850 lipo.. remove the spring cap at the bottom to lower it and placed a brass knuckle. It crawls much better but the shell is top heavy. I'm thinking of drooping the shocks.
@RCTNT
@RCTNT Жыл бұрын
The body works well over the axles but there is still plenty of mass there. At ECCF last month (Australia's biggest crawling event for 2023), there were numerous UTB18s in Mini. I think they'll benefit from a lower cog chassis. I'm planning on designing a set of rails for mine and testing iteratively such 3d printing. I reckon there's optimisation to be found here!

305mm/12", that's the gate width we use in comps so that's what I train with. That said, I can't argue with your logic! Train hard, comp easier, right? Not a bad idea.

What is the mini a kit? The steering is amazing compared to the Capra. I have the Capra & have been upgrading it. Saw a video of a 1080 esc being used with the stock motor for better low speed control.
@RCTNT
@RCTNT Жыл бұрын
Not a kit, as far as I know. It has several parts that look to be from Shapeways, some VP alu bits, including the knuckles, carbon fibre wheels and cage body, and MRC axles. I can't recall if the trans is the MRC unit or not, but if it is, it's gotta have a better main gear than the stock plastic ones, which I have broken several of over the years! It's pretty durable in current form, despite being old tech now. I'd expect a better esc would certainly help the utb18, perhaps a Holmes mini brushed esc if not the heavier 1080, or some other lighter one, perhaps the isdt70 or similar

yea its more a 1/14 scale compared to a TRX 1/18 , its got a 2 into 1 ESC combo , i bought one for 500 NZD , ran it, swapped the wheels for slightly bigger ones (not 1.9s) would be nice to see metal steering links not soft plastic like what it has
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 8 ай бұрын
It's definitely 1/18, they nailed the size for mini class, to the millimetre - literally! The TRX4m is a 1/22 or something, they shouldn't have called it 1/18, it's a bit misleading. But yes, the UTB18 is brilliant. If you look on the channel here you'll find I've done quite a bit with this rig now! It's ready for ECCF next year with my custom comp chassis I designed and released, plus the various upgrades to running gear, pin tyres etc, it's just a brilliant little thing!
