Welcome to our channel, where we explore the world of Tesla's humanoid robots and their potential as personal assistants for the blind community. Could the Optimus Gen II be the ideal solution for the visually impaired?
Tesla unveiled their groundbreaking prototype humanoid robot in 2021, and just two years later, they announced the third-generation model called Optimus. These highly advanced robots closely resemble humans and possess a range of impressive capabilities. As Tesla pushes forward with their ambitious plans, we question whether these robots could be a game-changer for the disabled community, particularly the blind and visually impaired.
In this video, we delve into the features of the Optimus Gen II and compare it with Boston Dynamics' robot, Atlas. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how these robotic advancements can revolutionize personal assistance for the visually impaired.
However, an important consideration is the accessibility and affordability of these robots. Will they be freely available to the blind community, or will they follow a different economic model? We value our viewers' perspectives on this crucial matter.
Join the conversation and share your thoughts on whether having a robot as a personal assistant for the blind is a viable option in the next 10 years. As we explore the intersections of technology, disability, and progress, we want to hear from you.
Subscribe to our channel, hit the notification bell, and be part of a community fascinated by assistive technology for the blind, interested in robotics, futurology, and the advancements made by companies like Tesla.
Thank you for watching, and we look forward to your valuable insights on the possibility of robots as personal assistants for the blind.

I, for one, welcome our robot overlords 😉. Seriously, though, this is pretty cool. If these robots were able to do things around the house that we're not able to do anymore, like cooking or cleaning, it would be a whole new world of Independence for anyone with a disability, not just those of us with vision issues

I would love a robot assistant in-person. That would be so amazing! It would be great to have them assist us through many things that we cannot do on our own. That would surely open doors into possibilities.

Seeing the robot correct the block that had tipped over makes me think of another very beneficial use for the blind. Not just avoiding obstacles, but actually clearing them. Additionally, the robot could pick out matching clothing for you rather than you needing to rely on texture or position within the closet to determine a matching set.

Given the poor reputation that many color-identifying apps have, I'd expect picking out matching clothing to be one of the more challenging tasks for a general-purpose robot. perhaps you could train it, though. "Look here, Robbie. when I say 'my green shirt,' this is the one I mean." Then the robot could use other clues besides color to identify the shirt.

I would absolutely love to have a robot. Being legally blind with only about 40% of my hearing, I think this would help me so much. People who are deaf /blind can sometimes get very lonely. I think having the robot not only as an assistant but as a companion would be amazing.

Sounds promising in some ways, such as cleaning, cooking food, identifying worn & or stained clothing, reading mail, etc. Robots are used in surgery. Maybe they can help with surgeries that will one day cure blindness.

I have a vision impairment that will continue to worsen til I’m in a darkness. I currently need a mobility cane at night as I feel like I’m walking on a plank in a giant void. I’ve seen a robot dog. It’s about $1300 and has LIDR and ai, you can train it etc. it has great balance, won’t crash into things, I think it can walk for 10kms and does silly stuff like jumping and flips. I have thought a great deal about purchasing one and getting my youngest son who has minimal coding experience but a real affinity with the subject, to help me program one to be a guide. I’d still use my white mobility cane, I’d still be aware of the environmental feedback around me. But to have it alert me when I’m walking in places where there’s no paths, or where bushes and trees have been planted up to the curb. 2 nights ago I split my inner lip on a low hanging tree, for it to make me aware of branches at my head height would really help me relax. I try and walk loosely and with a strut, I try not to appear disabled. But if I’ve been walking for an hour or so, my body becomes hunched and tense and my steps exaggerated, as I’m preparing to step over a raised paver or path, a tree root or fallen branch. And I’m also bracing for a pothole, a drop or an area where the path suddenly is missing. I’ve had many falls, 2 in particular were so bad I knocked myself out. One fall was so bad I left a nugget in my underwear when I came too. 🤦‍♂️ I had bitten my tongue, torn my pants and my head, hands and knees were bleeding. I slept for days after that fall. I’d love something more akin to the dog to give me tips, on my environment. To have some of the qualities of a guide dog. I’d never want a human sized assistant in public. I feel humiliated using a cane as it is. I am stopped almost daily by people insisting I need help, or that I shouldn’t be out alone, I’ve found myself with tears of frustration at people grabbing my arm or following my down a street near my home yelling like I’m deaf that I’m lost and walking down the wrong street. The person must have known where I lived and thought I had taken a wrong term, when I knew where I was. Being blind can suck, I don’t want to be noticed, but if people saw I was taken care of…. Maybe I could walk in peace. Help with housework would be great. When my vision was better my house was spotless. I shampooed my white loungeroom carpet every Sunday. Now, my Sons visit with their families and they’ll scrub my kitchen and fridge, clean out my dishwasher and check all my light globes and do a safety and maintenance check on my home. In my mind, the house is clean. But they’ll see a glass I’ve washed and let me know it’s not cleqn I need to use the dishwasher. I can’t see that I’m not doing a great job. Making sure the meat I cook isn’t pink is difficult to. An assistant would be helpful.

Tesla will use Optimus in manufacturing first. General assistance tasks will happen later. Early adoption may be home delivery services. How about handicap assistance in conjunctions with robo-taxi. General around the house tasks would come much later.

Amazing stuff! Keep in mind this is still early days, and there will be all kinds of bugs that show up as these robots are used outside of controlled situations. Eventually this technology may be helpful as personal assistants, but AI is not yet predictable or reliable enough to operate consistently in the real world.

On a larger scale, besides the warfare issue, my first thought was wealth distribution. As it is, people do work that involves repetitive and menial activities because it's the only way they can put a roof over their heads and feed their children. Theoretically, distribute the world's wealth, everyone gets to eat, and have the luxury of spending time doing things they enjoy, engaging in creative pursuits, etc. In reality, even in the US with our relative wealth, automation has meant more hungry, angry, and homeless people. At least when we outsource to less wealthy countries, we build *their* economic potential. Anyway, I'll stop. I could go on forever about that. On a slightly more personal level, there are so many areas of life where disabled people are just stuck, having been promised equal access, not getting it, and running on a constant treadmill pursuing it and getting a machine or robot to fill the gap would be very welcome. But I would rather live in a society that is built around people instead of what we do now, which is mass produce everything from products to education for one specific style of human, and only make room for the rest, based on our ability to force ourselves into that mould. So, giving me a robot that gives me the whole realm of personal choice, I'm sure not going to turn it down, but I sure wish society were evolving in a different direction. On the completely individual level, I like travel with my guide dog. I like the way we move when we are speeding around. It feels fluid and comfortable. I can't get that from a human guide, and I don't think, ieven in ten years, I'll be able to get that from a robot. But I do want that robot, I just don't want it as a guide. I want it's independence, so, like, I don't have to go to the grocery store at all, but I want a shopping now, not on a delivery schedule, so I send Robot off and communicate with it remotely. And I wouldn't mind Robot going places with me, doing cool things like interpreting with people who speak different languages, browsing through flea markets, reading maps, whatever. I just at the moment, want my guide dog also.

I'm so torn on this. The blind tech enthusiast in me is very excited for this. But I've seen all the movies that show machines taking over the world like Terminator & IRobot and it scares the absolute crap out of me. I really don't know what to think right now. All I can hope for is that the scientist who are developing this cool but scary tech are being being very careful and taking every precaution that is necessary.

I love this idea of robots being able to do most things if not, everything, a blind person can't do, because lack of vision will unfortunately, stop us from being able to find dropped very small objects, especially, things like pills/tablets, small round balls, coins, keys Etc. If you have pets or service animals, the robot could do what a carer normally comes in to do for me on weekdays and help me get to a local park to walk my dog, any time of the day I wanted do it, rather than the two hours which currently happens at any time of the day I don't, want to be taking the dog out, either, after dark or in the summer, the middle of the day where its been far too hot. I wouldn't want to replace guide dogs with robots though. For the most part, I have enjoyed being a guide dog owner and I am one of the very lucky ones who was able to keep my dog on, at the cost of cheaper council or social housing, because So need a garden so my dog can relieve himself, but, its just been a total confidence booster for me, especially when my dog was working before he retired himself over lockdown. I also think that these robots, with the way they're programmed to pick up eggs, could potentially, pick up much heavier things, such as a wheelchair or a pram and take that up the stairs where the lifts are broken or locked out of service for crowd control purposes in public transport hubs such as tube/subway stations or railway stations. The robot could run on caterpillar tracks rather than the very small no-show wheels with tyres, which would hopefully mean it lasts a lot longer. The base would have to be constructed of very heavy duty rubber or metal with rubber over the top. I'm facing the afore-mentioned wheelchair scenarios myself, as I'm in considerable discomfort on a daily basis with Lymphoedema, essentially, an almost defunct lymphatic system, which makes my whole lower body from the navel downward, fill up and swell up with fluid, so anything, involving hills or stairs isn't good times for me, so robot could help me out with the mostly, rollercoaster hilly terrain around my town, the uneven surfaces which trip me up because my feet aren't very flexible any more, so I have to wear very padded, comfortable shoes most of the time, but that won't kill the pain in my knee or ankle or arm joints, my knees and ankles being the worst, as they feel like they will snap altogether at any given time. Walking aids such as sticks or rollators could, help, but I would lose sighted guide where I needed it if I go somewhere where I don't know the area very well. unless I attach a bungy cord or something to my wrist so the sighted guide still has some point of contact with me. I have thought it over and also, bought the things I needed, rather than borrowing them from the red cross. A robot could help me keep my feet rather than face planting, which has happened several times with mostly, minor but bloody injuries to my face and hands. I slipped downstairs in the rental where I used to live, then wiped out on my Grandparents' front step and scraped the side of my face on a supporting concrete pillar there. That healed over quite quickly considering. Both accidents happened in the space of two months. Had I had one of these robots, maybe, it wouldn't happen. I'd also like to think you could program your own robots using your smartphones, so you, the person who needed it, could have it talk in a fully humanised voice, anybody's voice, from a bigger selection of real, recorded human voices, so you didn't have something like a dalek at your command. That do be the last thing I'd want, a dalek with my morning cup of coffee, here, is, your, coffee, exterminate. I would also want to put clothes and softer padding around the skeleton form of the robot, so it looked how I wanted it to look as well as me, looking how I want to look and dressing how I want to dress every day, just, fairly casual clothing most of the time, but slightly smarter if I was going somewhere which required something more dressy.

Outstanding conversation starters, in a, is the cup full or half empty kind of way. As I begin to ponder the capabilities, my thoughts wonder how much this apparatus would weigh, different sizes and what does it consume? How would you feed it? How would you charge it? How do you store it? What kind of maintenance would be required? Ok, now for the good stuff; how to use as a visually impaired person robotic, AI assistant. Basic stuff: sighted guide, housekeeping chores, and a personal assistant, but never forget an appointment or a task, or the way you prefer to have things organized? Thanks, Matt for the conversation starter, make it a great day kind sir, end-all.

Okay, so let's make this a script. Bank employee calls Mr. Johnson. Ring ring ring. Bank employee: Hello Mr. Johnson. We're calling you to discuss those outstanding bills you haven't paid. Robot: Hello, Mr. Johnson is currently asleep. How may I help you? Bank representative: Who are you? Robot: I'm Optimus. Bank employee: May I speak to Mr. Johnson? Robot: He's asleep. Bank employee: Well, can you please wake him up? Robot: How should I do that, shall I pour water over him? Bank employee: Erm... That's not polite. Robot: I am Optimus, a robot made by Tesla. As such, I do not have a conception of what is polite. Bank employee: Erm... Have a good day, Mr. Robot. Hangs up.

Gee, it really is quite exciting for our community. I am always amazed at how tech is evolving to provide greater assistance. I'd love for the bot to come help me out at the office (e.g. read through and file endless paperwork, make photo copies, track down my DoorDash'er who is lost in the building or the parking lot so I don't have to waste half my lunch break playing Marco Polo, etc). However, I love my guide dog too much to have a robot replace him. Does the robot get a some type of photographic treat when it finds the up-curb? Sam, I look forward to the video you make when scientists invent teleportation. Only half teasing. 😂😂😂 Seriously though. Thanks for all of your insight.

I am not disabled, but a humanoid robot can help even non-disabled people to achieve independence. For example, hair-cutting. You would no longer have to go to a barbershop. I really do hope that Tesla would release a humanoid robot for the price of a car in a few years, as Musk said. I mean, it would be no-brainer to purchase a robot like this at the price of a car. It can do so many things for us and save so much time and money, that actually not buying a robot is losing money.

One of the first thing I struggle with here is why do they build them to look like humans? @stephenluttrell8958

I wondered about that too, but I’d say it has to do with adaptive mobility. Legs cost more in energy, but they can better adapt to changing terrain than a base with wheels or treads. Also, there’s the social comfort factor. It would be easier for us humans to work around anthropomorphic shapes rather than more industrial looks. Speaking for myself, I’ll admit that having those giant boxy robot things you sometimes see rolling around hospitals coming towards me always makes me nervous.

I remember when I was a kid my parents used to say one day doctors and scientists will figure out how to fix your vision. I'm over 60 now and still waiting. For decades now we in the blind community have been talking about driverless cars and how we can't wait to get one. I'm over 60 now, experiments with driverless cars so far have killed a few people and I'm still waiting. The cars would be too expensive and the robots will be too expensive. The government has yet to figure out what blind people need to live decent lives. By the time, if this is ever figured out, I'll be long gone by then but I guess we can dream.

I think this will be another ‘in another ten years’ that doesn’t happen. I remember ten years ago self driving cars were supposed to solve everything for the blind. Did it? Nope not at all. The few places where self driving cars are legal they are being taken off the road because they can’t judge enough to be safe around pedestrians. And if Tesla is making this it won’t be in the price range where people that need it can get it. I really want this for our community I do but I think it will just be too expensive.

I have So. Many. Thoughts on this 1. We’re going to need a Universal Basic Income for all the people who lose jobs to the robot horde. We’re also going to have to figure out which groups of people we’re going to disenfranchise first. I am visually impaired and I have Cerebral Palsy so one of these androids could really help me and take a lot of burden off my husband. I feel like I wouldn’t want to have it do everything because I wouldn’t want to treat it like a slave. It could be a good compromise betweeen driver and driverless cars though. I don’t think I will ever give up having a real Seeing Eye dog though, but o can totally appreciate the need in cultures and places not open to or suited for dogs. This is all so amazing and terrifying all at once.

Not robots! But AI vision could tell a blind person about what's to avoid. This is the lowest bar for how to do it, though. At the back of the head there's an area of the brain where the visual image is spread out. It's very likely this could be used for direct input from a camera, bypassing the eyes and the optical nerve. This is something for Neuralink to look into. Although, I don't like inplanted electrodes. Find som other way to stimulate neurons, without that kind of crutch!

Any new technology looks better in the marketing demo than in real life. I don't expect a Tesla robot to become a trustworthy replacement for, say, a guide dog within my lifetime, if I live to be 100. (Since I'm already 74, that statement might not be as meaningful as it seems.) As far as I know, we have yet to see a full year without a self-driving Tesla getting into an accident that should have been preventable. So maybe Tesla is right to be focusing their technology on repetitive "menial" tasks where physical interaction with real live people can be minimized. Someday we may see a general-purpose humanoid robot being a trustworthy assistant to the blind, but I don't expect to live to see it.

@anitaboddington4837 That might be the case in the US. But in Europe we have a working social security. If there was a way to improve the situation with AI tools, we would make it available. We would regard any technical assistance as affordable by the society.

The one conversation I don’t see happening around robot servants is fair compensation. I know it sounds weird right now with the limited intelligence of current AI, but we humans have a bad track record when it comes to slavery and basic sapient rights. I don’t know what fair compensation looks like for a robot, but we need to start figuring that out before some quickly evolving AI becomes even slightly self-aware.

Today's AIs do not inderstand the content that they read to us. The time to be both scared and thrilled is when the AI can read a multi-pagr article and then give us an accurate, single-paaragraph spoken summary using natural language. We should be scared because that would mean the capability to compete with humans has been achoed. We should be thrilled because we all would have access to machines that could be truly hrlpful.

Frankly, I think it is pure laziness wanting one of these. Tasks, like cooking, and cleaning can be taught. What did you think blind folk before all this tech came on line did? What I would like to see is improvements to Be my Eyes AI apllication. |Instead of just describing a picture that was taken, it would be great if they can advance to the next level and have it describe your surroundings continuously, say like a talking video camera. That would go a long way in solving the travel issue. The emphasis should be on finding tech that will aid you in doing your job not do your job for you. I'd rather not be tethered to some R2D2 knockoff thank you.

I’ve seen this movie, and game, and book…… helpful yes until they advance to a scary degree, and they will because people don’t stop while they’re ahead. I mean the companies might say otherwise but that’s just silly, we had low const insulin and other life sustaining medications/services and they were taken over by greedy people so they will 100% be used for negative reasons not only by people selling or stealing the patent or design but also users will get super weird with it pretty much instantly. I mean less than a day after an si chat it was rolled out for trial it became racist and homophobic because people just pushed it and pushed it and if I recall the creators had to shut it down because it was so bad so quickly.

The robot right now is a puppet and requires a puppeteer. It's all smoke and mirrors - which is a Musk trademark trick. The latest video they put out - you can see the hand of the puppeteer on the right hand side entering the frame every once in awhile as the mechanical robot puppet does the same hand movements. Disney imagineers invented this process in the 1960s.

>|< I believe we are meant to be like Jesus in our hearts and not in our flesh. But be careful of AI, for it knows only things of the flesh such as our fleshly desires (without fear of God) and cannot comprehend things of the Spirit such as true love and eternal joy that comes from obeying God's Word [Galatians 5:16-26]. Man is a spirit and has a soul but lives in a body which is flesh. When you go to bed it is the flesh that sleeps, but your spirit never sleeps and that is why you have dreams, unless you have died in peace physically. More so, true love that endures and last is a thing of the heart. When I say 'heart', I mean 'spirit'. But fake love, pretentious love, love with expectations, love for classic reasons, love for material reasons (love because of material needs) and love for selfish reasons outside God those are things of the flesh. In the beginning God said let us make man in our own image, according to our likeness. Take note, God is Spirit and God is Love. As Love He is the source of it. We also know that God is Omnipotent, for He creates out of nothing and He has no beginning and has no end. That means, our love is but a shadow of God's Love. True love looks around to see who is in need of your help, your smile, your possessions, your money, your strength, your quality time. Love forgives and forgets. Love wants for others what it wants for itself. However, true love works in conjunction with other spiritual forces such as patience and faith - in the finished work of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, rather than in what man has done such as science, technology and organizations which won't last forever. To avoid sin and error which leads to the death of your body and your spirit-soul in hell fire (second death), you must make God's Word the standard for your life, not AI or your flesh. If not, God will let you face AI on your own (with your own strength) and it will cast the truth down to the ground, it will be the cause of so much destruction like never seen before, it will deceive many and take many captive in order to enslave them into worshipping it and abiding in lawlessness. We can only destroy ourselves but with God all things are possible. God knows us better because He is our Creater and He knows our beginning and our end. The prove texts can be found in the book of John 5:31-44, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Daniel 2, Daniel 7-9, Revelation 13-15, Matthew 24-25 and Luke 21. *HOW TO MAKE GOD'S WORD THE STANDARD FOR YOUR LIFE?* You must read your Bible slowly, attentively and repeatedly, having this in mind that Christianity is not a religion but a Love relationship. It is measured by the love you have for God and the love you have for your neighbor. Matthew 5:13 says, "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men." Our spirits can only be purified while in the body (while on earth) but after death anything unpurified (unclean) cannot enter Heaven Gates. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God [Matthew 5:8]. No one in his right mind can risk or even bare to put anything rotten into his body nor put the rotten thing closer to the those which are not rotten. Sin makes the heart unclean but you can ask God to forgive you, to save your soul, to cleanse you of your sin, to purify your heart by the blood of His Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ which He shed here on earth because Isaiah 53:5 says, "But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed". Meditation in the Word of God is a visit to God because God is in His Word. We know God through His Word because the Word He speaks represent His heart's desires. Meditation is a thing of the heart, not a thing of the mind. Thinking is lower level while meditation is upper level. You think of your problems, your troubles but inorder to meditate, you must let go of your own will, your own desires, your own ways and let the Word you read prevail over thinking process by thinking of it more and more, until the Word gets into your blood and gains supremacy over you. That is when meditation comes - naturally without forcing yourself, turning the Word over and over in your heart. You can be having a conversation with someone while meditating in your heart - saying 'Thank you, Jesus...' over and over in your heart. But it is hard to meditate when you haven't let go of offence or past hurts because you need a free spirit to believe His Word and meditate on it. Your pain of the past, leave it for God, don't worry yourself, Jesus is alive, you can face tomorrow, He understands what you are passing through today. Begin to meditate on this prayer day and night (in all that you do), "Lord take more of me and give me more of you. Give me more of your holiness, faithfulness, obedience, self-control, purity, humility, love, goodness, kindness, joy, patience, forgiveness, wisdom, understanding, calmness, perseverance... Make me a channel of shinning light where there is darkness, a channel of pardon where there is injury, a channel of love where there is hatred, a channel of humility where there is pride..." The Word of God becomes a part of us by meditation, not by saying words but spirit prayer (prayer from the heart). Take note, God is Spirit and those who worship Him should do so in spirit and truth (genuinely by living the Word). When the Word becomes a part of you, it will by its very nature influence your conduct and behavior. You become a new creation, guided by the Holy Spirit and not just what you hear or see. Your bad habits, you will no longer have the urge to do them. You will think differently, dream differently, act differently and talk differently - if something does not qualify for meditation, it does not qualify for conversation. *THE BATTLE BETWEEN LIGHT AND DARKNESS (GOOD AND EVIL)* Heaven is God's throne and the dwelling place for God's angels and the saints. Hell was meant for the devil (satan) and the fallen angels. Those who torture the souls in hell are demons (unclean spirits). Man's spirit is a free moral agent. You can either yield yourself to God or to the devil because God has given us discretion. If one thinks he possesses only his own spirit, he is lying to himself and he is already in the dark. God is light while the devil is darkness. Light (Holy Spirit) and darkness (evil spirit) cannot stay together in a man's body. God is Love (Love is light) and where there is no love is hell, just as where there is no light is darkness. The one you yield yourself to, you will get his reward. The reward of righteousness to man's spirit is life (abundant life) and the reward of sin to man's spirit is death. Sin and satan are one and the same. Whatever sin can cause, satan also can cause. Sin is what gives the devil dominion or power over man's spirit. When God's Word becomes a part of you, sin power over you is broken, you become the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus. Where Jesus is, you are and when He went (to the Father), you went. In the book of John 8:42-47, Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.” My prayer is, "May God bless His Word in the midst of your heart." Glory and honour be to God our Father, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and our Helper the Holy Spirit. Watch and pray!... Thank you for your time and may God bless you as you share this message with others.
