Most of Mikko's communication seems pointless to someone on the outside looking in, but in the midst of her making sounds she IS speaking and asking questions. It takes a lot of observation and routine consistency to understand and speak HER language. We often try to get Mikko tools and items that assist in her face and body muscle strength to help her form new sounds and words. I hope this video helps you understand a little bit more about what Nonverbal Autism is and how to encourage speech.

put her hand on your throat, so she can feel the lack of vibration. then put her hand onto her own throat so she can recognize the difference between breath and voice

I did this with my Son, that Dr s said was totally deaf, at birth as well as, placing his hands on my mouth, when I talked. He ended up talking early and was not totally deaf! 🙏🏽❤️🙌🏽😇🍼🥰

I ALSO talk with my mouth on theirs. Like saying...Mom, etc. It helps them learn to move their mouth similarly, feeling the way your mouth moves and the vibrations of the sounds you make.

Precious you are a BIG help to parent's with learning skills whether autistic or not. What makes you special is you are consistent with Mikko, and you do hours of home speech therapy every day. Other parent's - not all - think 1 hour with a therapist is enough. No it isn't. My sister's son was behind and had ADHD. Her children stayed with me 60 weekends a year Friday night to Sunday night (she worked weekends). I worked with him every time he was with me. Even his sister was learning. So I appreciate you sharing your tools.

I SWEAR she said 'look at what I got' and 'you gave me this' in the very beginng of the video with the raisin. It's like she speaks really fast and growl/garbles the words with other sounds. There was a little girl that lived on my street with a severe speech impediment and only her brother could understand her. But, the more time I spent around her, the more I understood her. She ended up in speech therapy and they discovered she spoke fast and cut off syllables of words. Now she's an adult and speaks with no issues. Maybe this is why I pick up things in Mikko's sounds??

Yes I have to agree my son who is with the Lord now when he was a child he was delayed in his speech 18 months and he had began stuttering around the age of 4:00 so I took him to speech therapy and they helped me to understand that he had to slow down. He needed to slow his mind down. So I had to be patient with him and guide him.. I hear Miko saying many things. And she is going to be talking a lot more mom... Keep doing what you're doing because she is going to be very verbal very soon!!!

I think she was saying "wheel" at the beginning. She was rolling the raisin back and forth and making sounds like a car.

Hi there. I found that my autistic students LOVED a microphone! They enjoy hearing their voice amplified and would repeat words that I would say to them. They also memorized dr. Seuss books (with CD's) and began to recite / repeat along with the CD. They were totally non-verbal initially. Give it a try. Find her fav book with cd...Keep up the good work! 🙏😊

Mikko is clearly very quick to improve the best she can with all the tasks she is given. Her speech is also coming along very nicely. I think she’s talking more than a few months ago. She’s clearly very bright x

You're doing some great work with her at home. I would warn others that there is no evidence base for talk tools working in an autistic population or those with delayed language skills prior to others investing in an expensive kit. I love how you interact with her and support her communication development.

SLP/AAC Spec., here. I want to encourage you to reach out to a speech-language therapist concerning functional communication. Right now, you appear to be focusing on verbal language vs. taking a multi-modal (verbal + sign language, low/high-tech *symbolic communication* , etc.) approach to building immediate functional communication skills. I think the goals you have for these talk tools don't necessarily align with their purpose for speech therapy. If Mikko is also receiving feeding therapy and and sensory integration, it's best to consult an SLP and OT for protocol and purpose. I don't mean for this post to sound critical or to be another "expert" in your comment section (even bearing the credentials and experience) but there are many more tools that can be at your disposal, that are evidence-based and provide greater support of functional communication skills, if you seek the support of an SLP.

I do not understand the hesitation of this mother and family to reach out for all the help than get with her!! What's the issue with this?? Not having additional help id hindering not helping!! It's almost like this is pivoting into SNL KZfaq obsession than anything!! If someone knows why she isn't in additional therapy please comment..

I just wanna say kudos to you mama bcuz Mikko have came a long way and she’s going to go real far and I know she is bcuz she’s very eager of learning and she does have her little fits and don’t sit when it’s time to learn at times but that’s all part of her learning disability and she’ll get it as her brain mature more for her bcuz I believe in her that she’ll get it in all due time bcuz she got a very patient mother that’s why so thank you for showing this to other parents that have similar kids or a child like yours and thank you once again bcuz Mikko have came along ways and I’m very proud of her of me just watching your channel and tuning in on your KZfaq

awesome job Mommy your journey is a hard one but its full of love, i am a parent of 2 autistic kids girl and a boy aged 13 non-verbal and loves to listen to jazz, gospel, and 60's music, and a girl 11 partially verbal she loves to sing i listen to her everyday watch the videos she loves to record herself on my phone, i work away so I only see them 4 days a month which is not a lot, i miss them so much I'm grateful for the schools they are in they do an awesome job.

Great job being so patience with Mikko! My son is also on the spectrum and we had an ABA therapist coming to our home to do one on one therapy on a weekly basis for many months which helped a lot and now he is able to communicate like other kids his age in school . I know you mentioned before that ABA is not suitable for Mikko right now. I can see lots of progress with Mikko as she grows, and I totally agree with you that it is a lot harder to teach her because you are the mom. Keep up the good work!❤

@@jalu8334 He is turning five this year and his communication skill is almost the same compare to most of the other kids in kindergarten . He is able to follow the class program with no problem and talk to make friends. I know he probably will need more speech therapy/support when he goes into grade school. But I think ABA worked for my son in terms of getting him to start his speech. It doesn’t hurt to try and doing it at home was helpful too. Hope you will find something that works too! :)

ABA therapy helped my daughter a lot as well. But you have to actually want the outside help for it to work. And she doesn't seem to want much outside help or advice when it comes to getting help from outside. It's already mentally and physically exhausting on the parent so getting help would not also help Mikko more in the long run but it would also help Mom. My daughter is almost 10 years old and will be in the 5th grade this coming School year. Last year she mastered the STAAR test in reading and math. She's in general education classes now with the help of speech therapy from school if she needs it because she has a hard time with P words sometimes. But the therapy would help so much for her and it would be great for her to see someone else outside of mom because they listen more. Like her therapist used to always tell me she's going to always poke the bear when it comes to Mom. But I had to put my pride aside and stop thinking that I was an actual superhero with a cape and get some help for my child. And that's one of the best things I could have ever done. And I hope one day she considers it for Mikko❤. Although we always want to do it all by ourselves we just can't. Especially when it comes to what's best for the child. And also she is very much verbal

I loved this video, so many cute moments. You two are absolutely communicating. I feel like she is communicating so much more. She feels your energy and i think she can tell when you are a little frustrated with her. Then she reacts. 💡 To help encourage the talking, please be a little more animated with her and exciting ❤. The others may get a little jealous to see you be so playful with her, but she needs it and I think it will help her feel comfortable with using her words and she will enjoy getting the animated praise🙏

You are doing an amazing job. Mikko is a beautiful, free spirit whose emoting sounds like her own music. It can be difficult and working with outside support may be a great support for your own self care. May I suggest for the snack closet… using 3 larger clear drawer containers on the bottom shelf with the picture tape on the front may help her make a decision. Keeping her things like snack, arts and crafts, and therapy tools sorted may allow her to visually see and communicate what she wants even subtly. Lastly, two things picture cards and a designated timer may also help reduce frustration.

Those paper party favors are a hit with her. Try making them with regular paper so she could easily blow them out. She is sooo smart and eager to please. Also have you tried baby sign language with Mikko? It might seem like a step back but it might help with overall communication. She’s just like the kids I nanny and break stuff all the time 😂😂❤️❤️❤️

She’s super smart and says a lot of words. Love the encouragement Mom! ❤ I have to lay things out in advance before I engage my son with it, to include eating, getting dressed, reading, etc. It’s a more successful experience, otherwise he’s all over the place, and I get nothing accomplished but getting frazzled. For choices, I give up to three options, pre-pulled, that way he can tap on it, and not get distracted by all the pantry fun. I find incentives/a reward system helps as well She’s an escapee, as my son is. She know’s what she is doing. Always growing always evolving, always learning. My son didn’t say mama until he was 4 years old, and he didn’t know what the word meant, but I was so proud of him. He is now 9 and says four letter sentences,knows his alphabet, colors, shapes, and has counted to 36, with assistance. He has initiated alpha phonetics A-Z with his choice of words. He likes watching KZfaq Kids. Phonetics, counting, Blippi shapes, feelings, and colors. Much much more. I just monitor so it doesn’t go to non educational junk. Keep going mom! You’re doing great! ❤

Mikko is going to be a great talker someday. Just keep working with her. I had 2 Grandsons from different parents who sounded like her when you were in the pantry with her. They each had a speech therapist that taught them at her age. They are grown men now and doing awesome. with no trace of what went on earlier. Great job Mother!!

Seeing you work on breath support with her is just delightful. Most people don't understand there's more to speech than just talking. Another visual way to work breath is to blow up balloons but that can be hard even for older children. An alternative for a kid around her age would be to make some tiny paper balls and have her try to blow them out through a straw. That way, she can see the balls moving around on the table/floor as the air hits them. You can do fun activities with that, like having several lanes and having multiple people do paper ball racing. :)

First you are an amazing mother! The patience and caring you show is without words. I can not imagine what you go through outside of what you show on camera. I read some of the comments and they are sometimes not very nice. You handle them with grace. Mikko is a beautiful child and I am sure you are going to get her to adulthood with all you do. She is very lucky to have you for a mother. I really don't know how this condition works I do have a friend whose son was born with autism he is now an adult. He some times does not realize his own strength thank god she also has a supportive spouse. Mikko is very smart you can see from these videos that she does understand how to get her way and what she needs to do. I guess that is a good thing in her journey towards growing but to keep her safe she should also understand boundaries. I am sure that will come too.

I don't think she legitimately said, "did you cook". Please don't get me wrong, I love me some Mikko, but if we're honest, I don't think Mikko is at the level where she's using meaningful communication & sometimes her verbal stimming by happistance brings sounds together that appear to be intentional, actual, meaningful words, but they just aren't.

I think you’re right, and tbh, I don’t come here much mainly bcoz 90% of her videos are of Mikko screaming while getting her hair brushed or throwing a fit bcoz it’s time for a bath…but I don’t see these tools doing much for her. Maybe she’s too young, who knows?🤷🏽‍♀️. Not much progress with these party favors!

I watch your videos and just wanted to let u know dont give up. As a mother of a daughter with autism it's hard but so worth it. The doctors said she would not have a productive life and would function in the world at a basic level. BULLSHIT IS WHAT I SAID. My daughter did not talk until she was 3, not a single word just sounds and pointing, then she just came out with full sentences. FAST FORWARD to today. She's in the 6th grade in regular classes talking fully and beginning to act like a normal teenage girl (uugghhh). Keep going young lady ur doing great

My grand will be 5 in May and she been in school since she was 3 she is doing really well she is able to move on to kindergarten wtbs she is nonverbal but she can sing full songs she also can count and sing her ABC she also can count by 2 to 50 all because of a show called Gracie's Coner so we have learned she can learn very well through music she still isn't speaking she does say things sometime she says hello or my daughter name ziah .. she finish songs and lately she has been responding to us calling her name keep making these vidoes they def helps us with our Ariel 🎉

Mikko is just just just like my baby sister down to a tee, down to her most used word being baby, bye bye and how she wants to get all sweet and give hugs and kisses outta no where sometimes. How she runs away when she doesn’t understand what’s going on. Man you’re so strong.

Blowing bubbles first could help her understanding of 'blow'. Using her breath to blow an already inflated balloon, up into the air could help her. Blowing items like cotton balls across the table. You could put colored tape on the table and ask her to blow the cotton ball across the tape and increases vocabulary that she hears (across). Using a communication app on a tablet helps children learn to speak as well. The data and my own working knowledge, show that children learn to speak and the tablet helps them share more complicated requests and responses. Many people believe it takes place of speakiing, but data shows that it doesn't. I think she will pick up the patterns of language quickly. Assistive Ware has training videos and online support. They can answer questions. It takes Autistic individuals a long time to learn language and you are doing a great job! You're right, when you said she probably doesn't want to work for you. That's typical in all kids. = ) Aspergers Experts is a great site for parent learning. Danny, the host, was non-verbal until adulthood. He now trains parents. Anyway, keep up the great work. You two are the cutest little pair. 😊

I have been seeing a listening sensory tool by Autism in focus which uses sound frequency to support communication in autistic children. I thought of Micko when l saw it ❤❤
