I think these earlier Jeeps are acceptable as honorary Mopars at this point. It would be a long time until Chrysler bought AMC to acquire Jeep, but spiritually it seems right to me. For one thing, just like Chrysler Corporation, they were often broke and on the verge of nonexistence. This particular Jeep is powered by a Buick engine (which I happen to love.) So while that may not seem very Mopar, I'm going to let it slide. Anyway... will it do Jeeping? And by Jeeping, I of course mean some extremely mild wheeling through a rutted field.

I think there was only one motor mount, (the other had rusted off), exhaust was... well, okay, there wasnt one really. Only the drivers door worked, and no the bsck window wouldnt roll up. Fun times in the winter!😂😂😂 Have fun, thank for the video Jamie!

High bud, good to see ya!!! I lived in Vermont less than two miles from Canada in the green mtns. I lived there for 25 yrs until my boys went off to college. I've owned several jeeps, A J-20 pickup ( extremely rugged). Two Wagoner for my wife, A C-J 7 for me for ( getting to work). Two Waggoner over ten years ( wife). I used the J-20 to haul everything including 8 cords of wood to heat our house. Plus anything I needed to haul. My J-20 was a 1967, I kept it on the road for 20+ yrs, about every two years I had to do lots if cut & weld metal to it I also replaced the body twice . it had sheep 327 cu in motor built by Jeep it lasted as long as I owned the truck. Minor repairs like heads reworked rinds & bearings etc. Loved my jeeps !!! Love your videos!!!!

One of the VERY few Jeeps remaining from AMC's short attempt to sell Jeeps in the UK (and Europe) between 79-83. 360 with Edelbrock, NP219, AMC 20, Dana 44 front, RHD converted. Needs serious work (roof is fubar, for instance) but just can't junk it. As far as i can tell it's the only 82 Cherk still registered with the UK DMV. 'Rare', redefined.

Cool video! I love the old Jeeps, I've always had one around in some form or another, just bought a new Renegade this year! I've had several Cherokee's and a Wrangler. When I was 13 my dad bought a 68 wagoneer and we used it to haul firewood, it was my first experience with a 4 wheel drive, it looked just like the one in this video only the grille was a little different, it had the Kaiser 327 engine which I'm not very familiar with. I had a blast as a young boy running that thing through the woods!

Actually, the 327 was indeed an AMC engine, but as I briefly discussed in the video it was sourced externally by Kaiser-Jeep for the Wagoneer in ‘65-67. They switched to the Buick 350 for ‘68-71 (so maybe Mitch’s dad’s was really early production ‘68 or late production ‘67? Who knows… friggin Jeep.) The AMC buyout came in ‘70 and they started to tweak things, but they didn’t switch the Wagoneer back to the newer AMC 360 until 1972. Entertainingly enough, the Jeep line switched entirely to AMC engines, but they would then go to GM again for the 2.8 V6 to put in the XJ Cherokee and Comanche pickups for a few years.

@@DeadDodgeGarage it may have been a 66 or 67, it was a salvage vehicle, the wiring had burned on it, dad bought it just to use in the woods, rewired it and it wasn't titled or driven on the street, we used it and the timing chain went out and he sold it to a guy that needed the drivetrain, I remember it had the Warn hub's that you had to get out and turn to lock in. We were told it was a 68, but may not have been.

@@dantheadventureman it actually was a very gutless 360. I believe the cat was mostly clogged the whole time I owned it, because it had this cool feature where you would floor the throttle, but it would never make any more power 😅 it was more a question of traction than horsepower though. Once I opted for wheel speed instead of crawl mode, I got up the hill. Better tires would’ve gotten me there with no problem, as proven by the other guys.

So that's a bit of a "FrankenJeep" the body is clearly a 73 (or later) but it somehow has the Buick engine. Since they all used a universal case TH400 it's a straightforward swap. Depending on your future plans, I could use some parts.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 11 ай бұрын
Right, that’s what we’ve come to understand. I went looking for frame numbers but haven’t found them yet. This will explain a lot. The weird thing is it has clearly been that way for a long, long time. It doesn’t look like any of the body stuff has ever been apart, and if I didn’t now know that it doesn’t belong there, I wouldn’t have ever questioned the engine. Nothing looks wrong or hacked together. All of the factory emissions equipment appears to be there. It’s… weird.
@natesteiner5460
@natesteiner5460 10 ай бұрын
@@DeadDodgeGarage so it's an easy swap. The TH400 is a "Universal case" so only the adapter ring needs to change for either Buick, AMC, Jaguar, Ferrari, or Rolls Royce applications). The engine mount ears bolt to the frame. I think the Buick radiator would fit in the later AMC hole, but not the other way around. Jeep didn't exactly have a lot of cash to go around redesigning stuff, so they didn't. Until 74 when they redesigned a lot of stuff, like the frame and suspension.

I'm not a Jeep guy by any means but this Jeep looks alright 👍 Also, this Wagoneer sure does scream International's Travelall. Is it the trick of the camera lens or does that floor shifter look really far away and small/short? Oh it's the 4WD actuator? If the early 70's Jeeps have shared parts between manufacturers, seems like a hybrid of a built SUV. 25% Ford 25% Chevy 25% Buick 25% Chrysler/AMC. It's like a joint school project lol.

I am 18,000% sure it’s a Buick 350 😁 this isn’t a ‘73. It’s a ‘70/‘71 model. It also says Dauntless 350 on the air cleaner. It’s also covered in GM pieces, including the 2 Jet. I somewhat explained the chain of engines that were used in these in the video. The two engines also look very different. I have had my hands in both.

@@DeadDodgeGarage I agree it looks like a Buick motor but that Wagoneer is a 1973, newer style dash introduced that year, 1974 and up used a different grille
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 11 ай бұрын
@@markchandler90 I have since learned that the dash came in ‘73. I don’t know where that leaves us. It has a ‘70/‘71 VIN, and a Buick drivetrain that matches it. It doesn’t look like any of it has ever been apart. Whatever it is or isn’t, it runs great and is ridiculously fun. It also doesn’t belong to me. I’m not going to worry too much.

Thats a 1971 , last year for buick engine but also had amc engines that year. Instrument cluster proves a 71

@marioncobaretti2280 what is the difference in the dash? Came without a title so filed for a lost one in California, want to make sure we get the year right because the VIN is no help! Has a standard oil sticker in the door with a 1970 date on it.
@upscaleshack
@upscaleshack 11 ай бұрын
That style instrument cluster wasn't introduced until the 73 model year, which should not have had a Buick 350. Either someone has swapped the dash or the engine, but that combination should not exist.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 11 ай бұрын
@@upscaleshack my cursory research yesterday confirms that cluster came in ‘73 as you say. But it sure looks like the entire dash is totally different and would have to be changed, and it sure looks like it hasn’t. I spent way too much time yesterday trying to nail this down. It doesn’t look like it’s ever been apart, and the drivetrain stuff also looks original. I don’t know what kind of mutt this is… wait, yes I do - an awesome one.

this is a strange mix of 70 and 71 parts. i have never seen a waggoneer like this one and i have been around these a lot. the 350 was the best engine ever put in these . the amc 360 is junk.
@DeadDodgeGarage

The Buick is awesome! Yes, I learned in the comments after it was posted that things are weird. Like the dash is late enough to not have been in use when the Buick engines were? I tried to find a frame vin to verify but couldn’t and gave up. It doesn’t look to me like it has ever been apart, but it could well have been apart 40+ years ago and it’s all dirty enough to look original now.
@super20dan

yes the dash dosnt match the 350 buick engine that dash is from the amc era and amc would have used their own 360 v8. i have seen 100,s of waggoneers up close and never one like yours@@DeadDodgeGarage think yours is a 72 with a 350 swaped into it
