Cleaning guy my foot LOL Looks like a solid pro repair to me, definitely way more solid than that flawed casting area ever was even when brand new and more of a sure thing than any kind of attempt at cast iron welding that may have scrapped the head.
@truracer20
@truracer20 5 ай бұрын
That is an easy braze repair area. Odds of cracking the head are half of what they were with this repair, the force those pipe plugs exert on the surrounding area is very high. Cast iron can be brazed and welded successfully. It is a common skill. If you do it wrong then yeah there is a chance of cracking. I would expect an engine machine shop to either be able to weld or braze cast iron or know of a reputable shop that can. The diesel engine shop that I cut my teeth in back in the mid 90's had a welder that we used who was in Cleveland Ohio, 90 miles from us, he was good and they never had a failure. If a customer had a cracked block and wanted to save a lot of money that welder was a safe bet, if he wasn't confident it would hold or be a good candidate for weld repair he told you so.

I ran into two pipe 90s over the years with pinholes in them. One was hidden under a house (1977 or so) in a blind 90 deg spot and it took us a couple of days to finally get soap smeared around far enough to get bubbles. Lo many years latter I kept getting a faint whiff of natural gas in a boiler room and the good news was it was open though it took me some time to fine that one as well. But I was ready for it as I knew then it could happen. Well done Jim and wife (she had to be the inspiration!)
