Helped my neighbor at his 5th generation Dairy Farm about 4 years ago He has had 4 different Cattle Guards, He got tired of his cows getting over them. I told him many times that just yank them out and put in gates. He kept saying it's easier not having to open and close gates all the time. So, finally, one day he call me and ask if I could help him pull the guards and put in gates. I had to chuckle a bit.

My uncle used to use my mum as a tester for the electric fences on the farm they grew up! The joys of having an older brother!😂

That gate takes all of the fear of being the ride along out to that field. Used to be the driver would stop, the ride along would jump out and open the gate, the driver would drive through and wait for the ride along to close the gate and jump back in the truck then carry on. Where is the fun in that?

Down at Disney Animal Kingdom they use a electric ground guard. It hangs a few inches off the ground so the ride trams can drive over it. It caught my eye because of the sound of arching as we drove over it because my job I work with electric.

Next time you forget a level you can use your phone, the build in gyro and an app make it a level :) Might even be a native app, depending on your phone.

I am thinking I have seen those gates wtih things hanging down from them, that are also electrified- you could hang some aluminum pie plates on there for some extra insurance. I know well the nuisance of opening gates. I am surprised the steers were not up there supervising your work while you were doing it- thank goodness they did not! And- no one ever gets all the right tools in one shot!

Hotwire fences actually do have a smell in the cattle learn what that smell is. So they probably could smell it

If you could adapt part of an automatic transmission flywheel for the rachet on the squeeze chute the teeth might be spaced closer for more control.

Hey Tyler! We have had the cattle guard issues at work as well. It takes some equipment but we remove the cattle guard, then dig out all of the silt and dirt that has been deposited in them through the years. They need to be deep to be a deterent to your critters. Then, instead of just the straight wires to the center of the cattle guard make a "V" from each corner of the cattle guard to a post a couple feet away so there is no chance for them to walk around the post itself. Your solution should definitely work though for the time being! Keep up the good work!

Tyler that gate looks like a great addition and solves the problem, I had heard of them but never seen one. It sounds like you're over the cold or flu, I don't know but you seem to have sent it me in N.C.

You get more voltage on the gate because the conductor has less resistance.

As far as always forgetting a tools... get some 5-gallon buckets and some of those organizers that you can drape on the bucket with all the pockets for your tools, and make a bucket for each job... i.e. an electrical bucket with wire strippers, electrical tape, tester, a fencing bucket, a sprinkler head bucket (lol) ... Then you just grab which ever bucket you need for the job. All the common tools that you use for just about every job you can just keep in the truck. It's been helpful for me at least. 🤷‍♂

I think I know why that didn’t challenge the electric gate, my father and I raise cattle here in Ky and from my and we have high tensil electric fence and any time we bring home cattle that’s never seen it before they get close and then walk away without touching it I believe they can sense it

… If you need a vertical level… Do what we did back in the day when I helped build the pyramids… Two large washers on a 2 1/2 foot string …stand back 20 feet …eyeball it, Lining the edge of the string up with the edge of the post for perpendicular… move 90°… Eyeball again for perpendicular… You’re welcome…

If you cleaned out under your cattle guard they would respect it again. When it is full of debre it is no threat to them going through.
