A can of pop or a can of beer at the same volume will weigh about the same. Mostly water and that is about a gram per mill (1 liter = 1 kg). Average can is 355ml so about .335kg plus the metal. Also as the liquid gets consumed the level goes down and the Z axis will not be needed as much.

On the 2 axis there isn't any resistance to changes in direction from the road and the sloshing of your drink. I'd like too see a ver 2 of this though, give the 2 axis a return spring and a dampener and you should see a better result.

6:00 A cup in a gimbal is a two-axis pendulum. When the CG is near the pivot, the pendulum is short and swings very quickly. When the CG is far away from the pivot, the pendulum is longer and takes more time to swing. When the mass centered around the CG is greater, the pendulum slows further still. Angular momentum, rotational moment, and inertia are the main concepts at play.

A rubber band around it all would probably keep it from swinging too far. Some spring effect. Though I think it would be cool to see that weight as a large magnet and have a magnet in the base that it’s attracted to. Maybe it will be attracted to the one wheel already

3:46 third axes would actually be in the center vertically, so it would just spin around it's center and it actually wouldn't do too much. Or maybe it was intentional to say that up and down motion, bc it makes more sense (as you said it would have to be different for every drink, but it would make sense more than just spinning the can)
@jeremyspecce

I would think just some tiny shock absorbers (like from an RC car) would reduce the amount of swing. I think the weight just adds to that. Also, it was really cool to see that steel encapsulated in the 3D print. What slicer did you use?

I like what some people have been saying about using motors to stabilize it. I think one problem right now is that the weight does give the gimbal a lower center of gravity and it does help it return to center, but it doesn't control how violently the cup will move. Stabilizing motors would definitely help, or you could try adding some resistance springs in the joints? Because right now, if the cup swings one way, as it returns to center, it's momentum will still carry it in the opposite direction since nothing actually slows it down. So if you added springs or counter torques to slow the movement across the axis as the gimbal returns to center, it would help mitigate the movement, so you don't have as much oscillating movement that just goes back and forth non stop.

I think having the center of rotation above the can would help, in all anti spill gimbal designs, the can is always pretty far below the center of rotation, however this adds a lot of height to the gimbal.

Probably way too late to consider doing it but if you had replaced the piece of steel with a block of copper or aluminium and put a nice sized rare earth magnet under the gimbal you could use the eddy currents as a passive damper.

I see a bunch of comments saying to add magnets but I’m not too sure that would work, you would need something to lower the CG and/or something to absorb the KE from high acceleration such as turning. I’m not too sure if it would work but creating a Z plane movement as well as springs or some form of resistance to reduce the acceleration of the can while moving.
@ButteredBizkit
@ButteredBizkit 3 жыл бұрын
Adding a counterbalancing weight rather than just adding more weight might work, by adding more weight and having the can inside it, the inertia would change obviously; however, it doesn’t do anything to benefit the gyroscope, if the weight could be added in opposite rotation of the can to counterbalance it then it should work more efficiently

You really needed before & after weights to quantify spillage. Most of the spillage is due to vertical shocks. And as you drink, the surface is farther from the hole, making it less susceptible to spillage. So, your shock absorber could be a simple elastic suspension, tuned to be most effective for the starting weight.

this guy's really fun to watch, keep it up man, doesn't have to work for it to be entertaining, but just for the sake of it, what if the pivot point was way ABOVE the actual body of the can? would that no make for a more stable grip? I mean a taller holder, in which the can goes deeper, might be tricky to design in such a way that extracting the can from the contraption won't be too much toruble, but that aside it would (i imagine) work
