Random newborn fact: newborns instinctively close their eyes in bright environments and open them in darker. So if your baby seems sleepy, put them in a dark pram to walk around. If your baby seems oddly awake, put them in a light and bright pram to walk around and they will fast fall asleep. I have 3 kids and I know this as fact, not a wivestale.

Fun fact: The Italian Fascists briefly tried to make the Montessori method their official child-rearing practise out of nationalistic sentiment - Maria Montessori being Italian and all - and because they fancied themselves so progressive and future-orientated. They quickly scrapped those plans when they noticed that the Montessori kids were less likely than regular children to submit and conform the way a fascist regime would expect it: The Montessori upbringing had made most of them to independent, self-confident and empathetic to be of any use for a fascist regime! So, basically: Go Lesbian Montessori Mums!

As a child of an anonymous sperm donor - Even though I have no interest in contacting him, I have EDS, POTS, and a lot of other medical issues. When I contacted the clinic to let them know that they should alert other children of that donor, they said that they couldn't do it because it is so anonymous. So I am glad to hear that you went with a donor that the child could contact eventually especially if there is a need for medical history.

@Cameron do you have a donor number? You could possibly spread the information via the community's for people looking for donors or people that have a donor. Ideally the sperm bank would just tell the other family's so they could be prepared incase their children have similar issues.

hey im a donor kid with a lot of health issues as well. it is so frustrating to not have any history but luckily I'm in touch with about half my siblings through both the donor sibling registry and 23andme. @takemealivethistime

Wow, that's really frustrating! I'm an egg donor and the clinic I donated through specifically told me that if the future child(ren) end up with genetic medical issues or concerns that they would not only contact the other child(ren) but they would also contact me, the donor, as well to let me know. It's unlikely due to the genetic workup they did before I donated but it's definitely possible. My mother also donated eggs and my half-brother had childhood arthritis, which didn't show up in my genetic workup or anywhere else in our family, but it's possible that it's just untraceable and it's possible that I carry a gene for that as well, although hopefully not.

@@michellezevenaar I have, however let's just say that I haven't had the best of luck with family members. I also really don't want to deal with the emotional turmoil that would come with finding out about extended family. Pro-tip. Do not get a stylish vintage stroller like the one pictured. Yes its very aesthetic and beautiful but the front wheels DONT TURN, what this means is when you want to turn a corner in a shop aisle or even a slight curve on a road YOU HAVE TO LIFT THE PRAM TO TURN IT. Literally. All weight has to be lifted to make a slight turn.

Yes, this! When it comes to babies, throw any notion of aesthetics out of the window immediately. Your life is about to get massively more complex and difficult. You need practicality. Just go for a buggy which is light, manoeuvrable, easy to get in and out of a car, cleans easily (seriously, you don't want to be trying to scrub vomit out of some beautiful vintage thing) and has plenty of storage / pockets / hooks for bags etc.

My mother had a modern stroller for my sister without turning front wheels. But it had inflatable wheels and dynamics so you can lift if with no effort what so ever. One time my sister flew out of the crib when my mom tied our dog (french bulldog, now deceassed because of liver cancer, I still miss her so much) to the handle. (She was perfectly fine, not even a scratch, she was swaddled, tucked in blankets a landed perfectly on her back which was the most stuffed area. Not like on her face. She didn't even woke up, didn't cry althrought she cried all the time - gas passing was a huge issue with us both. Mom rushed her to the hospital and they did not find any harm to her skin and inner organs) Anyways, it was so easy to manipulate. And I think with a modern wheels and dynamics even vintage stroller would work. My aunt had turning front wheels with my brother (my mothers sister and her had the same partner. Yes, it is strange. Yes, it was difficult to draw our herritage on school lessons. Yes, I was and still am ashamed. Yes, when I was hospitalized on psychiatric ward they did not tackle with my mental health but with our family being strange) But back to my point, front wheels turned but it was so hard to get on the other side of the road with elevated sidewalk. It did not have inflatable wheels (they have high risk of a blowout but if it does broke, you still can managed to get back home without a big issues. But mainly, the child do not feel every stone on the sidewalk and it's able to run over sticks, rocks without the baby being shaken like a in a bartender shaker) So it did not have inflatable wheels and it was so fricking heavy it was a nightmare to stroll with it. So I do not think turning wheels are always necessary but speaking about vintage strollers with no modern dynamics it's understandable

What a team-it was the three of us against the world, and that bond is still solid now they’re doing GCSEs & shopping for their own clothes. @@cassidybrewer if your child is happy and you don't really want a second, i wouldn't. Only children, when raised well, learn to be content with their own company and that's so valuable as you age. Not saying you can't have that with siblings, but only children learn to make their own fun and are typically self sufficient from a much earlier age. In addition, i got a lot of attention as an only child and therefore I don't seek attention as an adult. amazing! i agree, in my country it is a right to have access to your biological parents' info when you turn 18, and as someone who was raised by a single mom and found my bio dad later on, i think it shouldn't be any other way. not because it would be of any importance for the child to find the donor, but because it's unethical to actively withhold that info and take the option away from them. the donor is after all half of their genetic make-up. everyone should have the right to know enough to track them down should they choose to at any point.

As a child of ivf who had an anonymous egg donor, it does feel strange sometimes. My mother is the woman who gave birth to me and has raised me all my life but I’m still curious about who the donor is. What does she look like, what does she like, what’s her job, is she married, does she have kids of her own? These are all questions I will never know the answer too and it’s hard to learn to be okay with that. I am a Montessori child myself! It's a common method, yet very underappreciated. It is a lovely way to raise your child and what has gotten me through this pandemic is my ability to apply my Montessori mindset to public school distance learning! Giving your child a Montessori education is one that which allows freedom of thought, excitement for learning, and allows them to discover who they are at the pace they so choose. I don't know if I would be as empathetic without my Montessori experience and it makes me so happy to see my favourite lesbian moms already have such an excellent path put in place for their child. I love you two, and as someone who is rapidly losing their hearing in both ears due to multiple concussions, it is lovely to have someone like me living a fruitful life and making the best of what she has whilst keeping transparency. Love you all to pieces!

Disabled mother with EDS, I was diagnosed after my second and last child was born. Get the practical buggy! Transitions and mobility with a child was a huge struggle for me. Also be prepared for things not to go the way you planned. Children have their own personalities and their own rhythms and their own needs. There is just going to be a lot of adjusting and figuring things out as you go along. Knowing that and accepting it before the baby arrives will make things easier.

Even though my boyfriend and I are quite far off of trying for kids, I'm excited to here from Jessie and Claud about their inter-abled parenthood journey! I'm a physically disabled Mother of 2. My disability is rare and my mobility isn't good at all. My husband also has a disability although his doesn't really effect him physically. He has mild memory issues and a shunt in his brain but other than that he's very healthy, very clever, very mobile and has a full time admin job. I'm a home maker and although I need help a lot of the time (Cooking, cleaning etc) my kids want for nothing. The biggest thing I've learnt as a physically disabled mum is you can do anything a none disabled mum can do, you just have to find a different way to do it. But I've been disabled my whole life so it was a easy thing to adapt to because I've spent my whole life doing things in a different way. When they were babies getting them out of the cot was difficult so I would wrap them in a blanket (like they were delivered by a stork) and use the blanket to lift them. Now they're older (3 and 5) I do a lot of things with them sat on my knee. Dressing them, helping them put their shoes on, playing etc because I can't get down to their level like a non disabled mum would, They ride on my knee in the wheelchair when we're out and about (and I did this when they were babies I just used a sling or a special baby seat belt.) It's hard work and you have to think of everything from a different angle but I'm proud of my kids and proud of my achievements raising them.

As a disabled parent (a gal who also happens to be married to another gal) the best advice I can offer is to treat your self-doubt as a bully coming after your child. My wife can haul rocks up from the creek to help the kiddo with his treehouse, but I can't. In the same turn, I can spend an hour in Minecraft with the kiddo when that would drive her insane. Not saying it's easy peasy but parenthood isn't. You two are already off to a great start being in a loving relationship, stable home, and realistic expectations.

Its still unfair that lesbian cpls have to be married to legally claim their partner's baby at birth. In terms of nurture vs nature: my mother was raised by her father and his friend, with this friend listed as her mom in school paperwork. My mom looks nothing like her biological mother, but does share a lot of characteristics with the two men who raised her, even if only one of them is her biological father. Children often adopt a lot of mannerisms from the people who raise them, resulting in the child growing up to actually look like these people, regardless of who provided the sperm and egg. This is also why we sometimes think siblings look alike, even if they don't see it themselves. They act and move in the same way

I was in a Montessori school as a child from the age of 4ish to 9, and then I moved to a 'traditional' primary school (in Ireland). I felt like the Montessori was amazing for teaching social skills and independent thinking. That style of school places a lot of trust in the child, and emphasis on their individual skills and interests, which was definitely of benefit, and learning felt a lot more like play than like work. However, I will say that when I aged out of the school (they only served children up to the age of 9, but Irish primary schools go up to 12 before kids change over to secondary school) I found the transition to the other primary school really, really difficult. Going from an individually led, free-form learning style to a strictly structured classroom where all the children are doing exactly the same thing at the same time, and can therefore be compared, was very jarring. So I recommend having a think about the whole schooling journey!

Yeah I was homeschooled for several years with a Montessori style of teaching, and while the transition to public high school was difficult but not awful, as an adult I struggle to discipline myself. Like “what do you mean I need to do this thing now because my boss said so? My brain wants to do this!” So it’s something I’m actually still struggling with. It had its benefits for sure, but I struggle with structure a lot because of it.

The way my secondary school (the Swedish equivalent to lower secondary school I believe? Between the ages of 13 and 15) worked was Montessori like in many ways, and while it was wonderful and possibly the easiest time I've had during my school years, it was a hard blow to go back to public education afterwards. I struggled a lot with the forced structure, even though it was kind of based on the belief of the "free thinking individual", more so than other public secondary schools, it was still hard and I found myself unable to do certain assignments because I couldn't see the point and found it incredibly dulling. I'm still struggling with that right now with continued pre-studies I need for vet school. I like the idea of Montessori in general but it did hit me hard when I was forced in to the public education system.

I agree and disagree. As someone who only ever went to public school (in canada) a lot of the struggles with self regulation and focus on strict scheduled tasks is true for a lot of kids who never did montessori too. Its more because its not how people are meant to be and is very naturally hard for some learners than because someone didnt get practice at a young age.

My kids are Josephine and Ivan I liked that both had “easy” gender swap names. As someone who has taught for years, I hope this is meant in the kindest possible way, but some children (many) do well with Montessori methods, others do not. We learned about the topic in school and I had to write an exam about it and look at it critically. On one hand I really liked the way Montessori saw children, because she saw them as people and not as kids who do not understand a word you saying. But on the other hand it seemed like they were put above every other human being and it did not quite relate to the „real world“. Since Montessori herself always spoke up for mixed education I am kinda torn. But Jessica had quite a lot books so I think they are going to make the right decision. This is also not meant in any mean way, its just very interesting to hear this Information you gave because you actually know what you are talking about. What I really like about the method is the free way of learning, I would have loved something like that when I was younger. Also if there are any grammar or spelling mistakes I am sorry, I am from Germany. And again I love them this is not meant in a mean way, its just a topic I was very interested in the last few months.

@@tonirodans8073 Speaking just from personal experience here, I attended Montessori education up until middle school. (and to cut it short, it just “worked” for me.) But I found the usual public school system to be incredibly taxing, competitive, and very focused on punishment-reward based recognition, and most of the time incredibly non-accommodating to those not of a completely neurotypical nature. I totally agree with these comments though. You really just have to take it child to child. And starting somewhere with what you know, and the desire to learn and be the best parent you can be. All you can do! lol. Wishing the best for these two mamas c:

@@arrghus these comments are really interesting to read - I spent the first half of my education in montessori and steiner schools, before moving on to a more conventional school to finish my education. I found that that worked incredibly well for me because the montessori and steiner schools (particularly the steiner in fact) were brilliant when I was younger, basically letting me just be a child, enjoy my childhood and also to develop and nurture my interests. when I was 12 I moved to a conventional school just near brighton (where jessica and claudia live) and i think that was a really good decision on my parents' part because it let me get on top of the more academic side of education. the reality is, montessori, steiner, all these kinds of schools are really great, but it is much more difficult to get into uni or go for higher education if you graduate from one of these types of schools, as the academic standard is simply not high enough. the correct education methods can definitely change from child to child, and I'm so glad that jessica and claudia are looking into alternative education :))
@arrghus
@arrghus 3 жыл бұрын
@@suddenIypineappIes I agree. I think this backbones onto the conversation of prioritizing your child’s development vs prioritizing opportunity, which can end up a similar route to ours. Montessori as your child is still well, a child, and as they get older add the introduction of more workload/critical thinking centered learning. (I honestly still have a bone to pick with the American public school system, but that’s a whole different conversation). But the fact is that traditional schools really are the door openers to higher education. Very true. (I think it’s important to give your children those opportunities, too, even if they decide not to pursue higher education.) But I’m also excited to hear what they have to share about their own experiences (:

I mean in an alternate reality even if Claud was a man and you were a straight woman...well, you would still be able to have a baby you'd just need a surrogate mother. So for anyone like me who is a straight woman and for medical reasons cannot carry her own child and has a partner that may or may not want kids. You can adopt of course, but if you want your DNA you can always do surrogate which is almost the same process as what Claud went through and you have the option to meet the surrogate or just wait for your bundle of endless nights of no sleep or no life 'joy'. I do not want kids and haven't since the age of 14. Now at 34 I still haven't changed my mind. WHen I found out for medical reasons I can't have a child I was so happy bc now I can stop my family from asking me "When are you and your partner going to have a baby?" Because they assume we are, but we aren't. So um, we weren't before this medical stuff, we aren't now. BUt I digress don't let your medical issues and family determine your life choices . There are options! For everyone of all sexual orientations and medical conditions! And when in doubt...raise a puppy first ;). On a serious note: you lovely ladies will make the best mom's. I can tell you really want a baby adn that's how it should be as we have too many humans on the planet already. So why not have more humans go to people who can really give them a good life ;). Rather than 'opps forgot to use a condom" or "omg that less than 1% pill failure kicked in because I didn't take my pill the other day!". Which isn't to say accidental pregnancies won't work out, it's just that some folk are not meant to be parents. And that's ok. Just realize you're selfish and cannot raise another living being. Just like me XD. I love my cat. She's great.

I went to Montessori from age 5 to 15. It works really, really well from age 5 to 12 after that it loses some of it’s value as the grades go more into focus. However, all of this is anecdotal and is most relevant for Sweden. We only start with grades at age 16 and up. I wish you the best of luck with the Montessori.
