So much respect for you! she is playful and adorable but yes if she had resource guarding that would be a serious source of problems in a family with children (or without them) and there are trainers who do "dance around" certain problems and teach you how to lure dogs away from problems with treats but don't really address them. In the past we were actually told something like "well you don't really need to pet him if he doesn't love being touched" as if sharing a home with a snappy fearful dog you can't safely touch can make sense (for both parts).

Aww. She's seems to be such a precious heart. I truly hope she finds an amazing forever home! Unfortunately, staffies are banned where I live 😥.

This is actually a really good video on how to approach this. Usually I just go in and see what I'm dealing with, without too much fear (or caution) to get bit. So far I haven't, but it's nice to have a better approach. I'd have tried the 'out' command early on though, to see if she knew it.

I learned about "resource guarding" with a rescue from you and your site. I decided to take a proactive approach. I taught my rescue to "trade me." I would give her 3-4 of her favorite kibbles in trade for the items I needed her to give up to me; a favorite Kong ball, a raw bone, etc. This works perfectly for us.

So lovely. She's behaves exactly the same as my gorgeous staffy mutt ❤️

Hello Fenrir, I have recently adopted a Cane corso, he's an absolute dream. I'm only struggling with his dog reactiveness, due to the sheer size. once he sees a dog he barks and pulls (but not enough to drag me, which he easily could) he has also gone for his lead twice which is a new one. I do believe it is anxiety, he probably hasn't been walked most his life, he's 3. I was taught the same methods as you teach, a few years ago, but can't seem to get past the dog reactive.

This is very impressive. Not many will have a guts to go and put their hand near the dog’s face like that, especially those so called ‘clicker/trick trainers’.

She reminds me of my boxer/staffy cross so much. That's exactly what he's like with a tennis ball and I really struggle to get his attention off it once he has one. Would love to play fetch with him but he never lets me have the ball back. From your video I'm guessing that's the terrier in him. I can get as close to you and even try and take from his mouth and he has no resource guarding issues. But, even for a dog that has a high food drive, I can't distract him away. I love staffys so much. Looking forward to the next video.

I'm trying to work on my dog's resource guarding and finding it really difficult. He's a sweet dog normally, not aggressive in any other way but if he gets a random object (especially in the house) he'll take himself to a chair and growl or snap (I wouldn't say he tries to bite as he's never actually bit me but its definitely a warning so I back off) or you reach a hand near him. I've been doing the trade with a high value treat/object thing, but the problem is that he doesn't value anything as much as the thing he has. It's normally sticks or tissue or some piece of rubbish - he doesn't guard his toys or food. And neither food nor toys will make him trade :s

This is how my American pitbull terrier is. She loves to tear up her ball. She would never hurt a human who got near her to take something from her mouth but she’s definitely not gonna let it go for an adult lol but she’ll let it go for the children. She’s not resource aggressive like my German Shepherd is. He’s not that way with me but he’s like that with others. But I need to teach drop it and leave it and that’s really hard because she doesn’t want anything she has in her mouth to be taken. She wants to run and tear it up and be a silly old puppy at six years old Lol 😂 have to look for your videos on that!

I don't get how, as you say, shelters are full with staffies. I own one and couldn't imagine ever getting rid of her. Is it possible to adopt such a staffy that needs a home when I live in the Netherlands? Greetings from Netherland

Can I ask you some advice? We tried taking in my Grandmother's dog becauss she is having a hard time taking care of. We think she must be a Doberman mix. Very sweet to us, but lots of problems with leash and stranger and fence aggression and counter surfing, etc., all things I spent months working on and willing to work with (your videos have some excellent tips!) But we eventually had to give her back after me getting bit 3 times. The reason why it took 3 times was because they were strange bites, no growling, no ears back or anything like that and all food related. All 3 instances involved her trying to eat something bad for her and me trying to get it away and I would grab it, but not pull and I tried everything I could think of to get her to let go, and then she would "readjust" on the object and happen to grab my hand with her teeth as she readjusted on the object and she absolutely would not let go of my hand. It almost seemed like an accident the first couple of times, but the third time she was biting hard on my hand an would not let go for about 30 seconds until I slid my hand out as she readjusted again. We have 4 kids, a couple of young ones and even though I can commit to keeping my hand from her mouth, we couldn't guarentee that our young kids wouldn't try to get food back if she stole it from them, which was the case for two of the bites I got. What do you think about this behavior? Do you think it was intentional? We don't have her anymore, but do spend time with her when we visit my grandmother and I still enjoy the dog, but am still a little nervous about this behavior around my kids. My Grandmother said she never did anything like that with her.

Great video, you are definitely inspiring me. I am considering to adopt one staffy from the shelter. I have been walking him several times and we are starting to build confidence. He is available for public only using muzzle. I am probably the only one not using it for him. We play tug-of-war, which we both enjoy. I can always trade a tug for a treat, when he calms down, otherwise he is very protective. I found your video very inspiring - my aim is to use treat afterwards as a reward.

Will we have just adopted a Saffie X from a rescue Centre unfortunately she is very dog aggressive..where do i start?, i’m guessing we both go to training classes. She has yet to be spayed i’m wondering if this will make a difference?

My 76 lb 13 year old princes we've had her at 3 months old. She has bit my wife 3 times. My daughter 1 time. And my granddaughter, 1 time all bad injuries. Status aggressive to all but me. Perfectly, heathly I'm now forced to make a decision. Veterinarian will come to our home on 5/1/23. She's been the best dog in every way, and the smartest obays never pee in the house. Gos on Walks has a yard. I love her so much. But I can't let unexpected bits go on any longer. She is staffordshire terrier bull. I wish there was an answer how to let her live another 3 years.

Little tip. Don't take ball away as it triggers drive and chase mode, get dog to release ball first.
