William Collins Survival Knife. I wasn't sure how I would like this knife until I got the chance to use it myself. It is as close to a one-tool option knife as I have tested to date. If you are looking for a survival type knife that can do many tasks from bushcraft to survival, game prep and general camp tasks look no further. William is making batches of these knives at a time so if you want one make sure to get your order in.

Living Survival I have WCSK number 0016 and can’t wait to get it. I have several of his knives and more on the way. Well worth the price. You can pay over $200.00 for a production knife all day but won’t get the quality. Glad to see another review of another great knife by William Collins/WC Knives

Have you ever seen a Platypus? That's what this knife should be called. I'm sure it does many things but none well. Personally, after over 50 years of outdoor experience (military, contractor and civilian) it amazes me how this "ONE TOOL" quest continues!

Living Survival - Nope, I haven't, just my opinion for now but I will check one out when I have the opportunity or come across one. Obviously, I'm "old school" (ax / hatchet for chopping, saw for sawing and knife for the rest). I like my knives SHARP for cutting , dressing, fine work and the edge needs to be at a different angle which is not conducive for chopping. No disrespect intended just my thoughts.

Richard Stone I was always Leary about Knives with a recurve and the dual grind thing. But after following William for quite a while it became quite apparent that this is an honest and humble man who is passionate about designing high quality knives that WORK very well. You should definitely look up William Collins KZfaq channel. I’ve purchased several knives from him and am a user, not a “collector”. He actually brings people along throughout the R&D process via the videos. You should also check out his Master Woodsman. William would be the first to tell you that he’s not sold on a “one tool option” either.

Huge proponent of the one-tool option. However, I think, in reality, the skills of the practitioner with the tools available will determine the use of the tool. So while a one-tool option is a comforting idea, I think the situation, equipment available, creativity, and skill will determine effectiveness.

Ben, Thanks for the review. Been watching the evolution of the design and have a couple others knives from William including one with a Master Woodsman grind. Love it. Watched the videos by Blackie with Shamans Forge Bushcraft and Dan Lutz with his channel AB Normal. Trust the two of them as well... pretty much sold me on getting one. Sent William a message using a Facebook link ordering one... (haven't heard back yet but hopefully soon). He does do a fantastic job in producing a quality knife that makes it for function. I also like Will from Mantis Outdoors... with his add to the review... makes it a done deal along with the others and my experience with the Master Woodsman. All the VERY BEST!

I think you may be slightly off there, the original prototypes were hand cut but now that he has finalised the shape I believe they are water jetted, then ground by William, then tempered off site before being finished by William, not that that’s a bad thing at all, keeps them consistent so that the custom sheath makes can make the sheaths without needing the knife. Great lookingknife though, well actually it looks strange but it has grown on me... Nice review, good stuff.

WC does fine work! As to a "1 tool option".. that's a sales gimmick. I don't like the concept either. The only time the OTO comes into play realistically is when it is forced upon you. You have a situation, you only have one tool (any tool) that you now have to make the best of. I will always take multiple tolls when given a choice.

Nice knife. Price doesn't matter for me at all. Means I have already knives enough, so I don't mind about that one here. ;-) But honestly said, I would never want to depend on a one tool option in a survival situation - nor would I follow that philosophy in daily life. Especially in a survival situation I would like to have as much redundancy what means as much tools as possible. Means you should carry at least two of these knives ... ;-)

Carlos Sepulveda .....so do you have your wcsk now? What are your thoughts? Is it your first William Collins knife? Just curious to hear from a retail consumer. Ive purchased a knife from william before...and I can appreciate the work that he does....but it wasnt for me. The fit and finish was pretty rough. Im not talking about expecting a safe queen knife, but this knife was far from refined or finished, at least based on what I would have expected from a custom maker that is getting these prices. A maker deserve these prices based on time, skill, effort etc etc....but even LT Wright shop puts out some fantastic finished products, and at nearly mass produced levels. So to say the least I immediately resold the knife at a $60 loss. So now Im curious to hear someone else’s input.

The Pride is a smaller knife for finer tasjs but yet robust enough to be able to survive with. But that W. C. S. K. reminds me of one of my Fav's, that I team with my Fox Hitam Golok, I love that combo especially in wet and snowy conditions. Yeah, my Fox Trekker Utility Camp and Sniper Knife is a unique bushcrafting knife, Yet what William did with his is super, look how similar they are, but I still want one by William even though I have the Fox. goo.gl/images/QvuuKn Dilly Dilly.,,.p

I'll never understand why someone would pay a premium for crappy "super steels". Sure, the edge retention is nice, but goodluck sharpening that knife if you get into a survival situation and you lose your diamond sharpener. I'll gladly take O1 or AEB-L any day over s35vn or cpm3v. There's a piece of mind knowing I can sharpen my knives with a rock in about 30 minutes if I needed to.

@@pubplays368 if your smart you dont let it get dull so that a few swipes on a strop and its good to go...and when you break one of those knives what then....i would rather use my head and have a superior steel with superior strength and toughness, that stainless is great if your on a deserted island and worried about corosion. all you need is a little common sense and maintenance and cpm 3v will last you longer and get you through more crap....o1 is good if you wanna stop to resharpen more than you have to piss....crappy super steel....thats an intelligent thing to say!

@@christopher_martin It's clear as day you aren't in the field often. There's a reason every top tier survivalist ever prefers 01, 1095, AEB-L, etc. You completely missed the point of my comment. First off. Statistically speaking, CPMV3 is no tougher than 01 tool stool. Both when heat treated properly are equally as tough. CPMV3 holds an edge better due to the way carbites and such are formed when being made. You're much more likely to chip 3v than 01 in most field uses that involve survival practice. Which was the original point of my comment. You aren't going to be able to maintain that 3v if you end up losing your maintenance tools. 01 can cut standard rope roughly 352 times before it dulls. 3v will cut rope around 396 times before it dulls. I don't see how 3v is worth the purchase over something like 01 when it doesn't exactly hold an edge much longer and take many times over the effort to sharpen ASSUMING you can't maintain the knife.
@pubplays368
@pubplays368 4 жыл бұрын
@@christopher_martin 80crV2 is a good steel option. Doesn't take much effort to sharpen but it doesn't hold an edge long. AEB-L in my opinion is the best steel money can buy for a knife. As tough as s35vn but sharpens just as easy as 01. Its a stainless swedish steel that was originally designed for razors. Perfect for survival and you don't have to worry about corrosion.

What's wrong with the USA? Looks like you all have moved to Hollywood coming up with movie props. :) First the Tracker, then the MSK1 and now this. Like in the videos about these other knives mentioned I again did not see anything that I can't do better with my Ontario SP5 for instance. We have a saying here in Holland and it goes something like this: You can put as much whipped cream on a turd as you like, it's still a turd. Of course this is sarcasm (for a part) and I'm happy that some people in the USA just make functional knives. ;)

I was won over by WC's last knife, but I think this one is just silly in every possible way. Of course, there really is no such thing as a "survival knife". Such a thing does not exist, and never did. It's a made, pretend thing, brought into common parlance by movies, and by ex-soldiers who had no clue why they were handed a Ka-Bar. The number one survival knife in the real world, whether for the pioneers, the frontiersmen, the longhunters, woodsmen of every stripe, George Washington and his troops at Valley Forge, and even most militaries, has always been a pocketknife. Outside of the KZfaq round robin misinformation, most of the world still uses a pocketknife as both a survival and a wilderness knife. The most common knife is the Swiss Army Knife, but at least half a dozen pocketknives made in America do as well, and better than any fixed blade "survival" knife that really just makes everything a lot harder. Is this knife overpriced? Nothing is ever overpriced, if you think it's worth the money. For me, the question is always "will I have this knife with me should I get into trouble?" The answer for this knife would be "No, of course not." This is not a knife I would even think about using on a daily basis. I'd ten times rather have a Mora Companion,. and a thousand times rather have a good pocketknife with three blades for daily use, and I think it's silly to carry a knife you won't use unless some emergency arise. This is even truer when I can handle any emergency better and easier with my pocketknife, or the Mora Companion. If you need any kind of specialized "survival" knife, this one or any other, I would take bets on your chances of surviving any life and death situation that lasted more than a few days. A few days with good weather. I've never seen a knife that was actually called a survival knife that was worth a buck fifty for keeping you alive. Even the venerable Ka-Bar is called a ""Fighting and Utility Knife" and not a survival knife. If part of your survival needs will be fighting with your knife, then, and only then, does a survival knife make any sense at all, and this knife isn't even good for fighting.
