I can't tell you the number of times he yelled at me about this over the four years I studied with him. After teaching for 35 years I can say he was absolutely right.

I've been told by about 3 big-time professionals to back off the vibrato. I guess it's time to take the advice!

Manny, do you feel that the vibrato--at least in the symphonic idiom--has gone out of style? It seems that many of the greats from years ago... I'll use Dokshitzer as a prime example, would never have landed a job in the modern orchestra.

zaknefain100 The vibrato is still in use. I do it but I am careful not to overdo it. My vibrato is different for each composer. That's the way it should be.

He would never have said that in public. Never. Don't know what you heard but it wasn't that, I assure you.

"If you used it in those days they thought you were crying." It was very clear.
