Anybody know the horn and mouthpiece he’s using in the photo?

I heard that recording of the Bach Mass on Lp at my public library in Topeka Kansas. I later studied with two of his students, Sanchez and Berinbaum. And the Bach recording was great. Even now I remember it. Full sound.

Do you have any more videos like this and the others? I’d love to see and hear them. My 2 1/2 years with him was amazing. I wish I could go back and do it all over again

Llewellyn passed away suddenly in a car accident in Texas In 1936, he was manager of the CSO as well as Principal Trumpet. Renold Schilke was a student of Llewellyn's at the time and made a copy of his (Llewellyn) mouthpiece to be made available to the public in return the sale profits would be split between Llewellyn's widow and Mr. Schilke. That piece is still sold today as the Schilke model #9 (formerly model B)

1:11 did he say, "to use it in those days is a fking crime?" Or am I imagining things??

He would never have said that in public. Never. Don't know what you heard but it wasn't that, I assure you.

Manny, do you feel that the vibrato--at least in the symphonic idiom--has gone out of style? It seems that many of the greats from years ago... I'll use Dokshitzer as a prime example, would never have landed a job in the modern orchestra.
@MrPrincetrumpet7 жыл бұрын
zaknefain100 The vibrato is still in use. I do it but I am careful not to overdo it. My vibrato is different for each composer. That's the way it should be.

4 years later and it's still great to hear the old man give advice. The younger guys today will hear these quotes and pull out every musicological reference book and say it's all BS. They don't get it. He was about the spirit of making music and would say things that seemed a little nuts to some people just to get you to think about things in a different way. Well, when these other guys place hundreds of students in jobs all over the world maybe they can talk

I studied with Mr. Ware. He replaced Cecile Collins at Manhattan School of Music when he retired in 1980. He really was a phenomenal player and great teacher.

I studied with him 76/77 Kean University. Best teacher ever. He never brought his trumpet 🎺 to class.

I've been told by about 3 big-time professionals to back off the vibrato. I guess it's time to take the advice!

John, while the transcription is being performed in D minor, the concerto was originally written in C minor, hence the title.
@johnbranzer981212 жыл бұрын
This performance by Maurice Andre is superb! However, the key of this concerto is "D" Minor, and not "C" Minor as is stated in the title. This piece is being performed on a 4 valve Piccolo Trumpet pitched in the key of Bb.

I can't tell you the number of times he yelled at me about this over the four years I studied with him. After teaching for 35 years I can say he was absolutely right.
