I don't have one, but the FlexCut Carving Jack comes with rubbing compound and a wooden block formed to strop both sides of all the blades which lock. That might be enough to justify the extra cost, if you felt the need for a multi-carver. I don't. Right now, I'm content with my WC crooked knife and a couple of Moras.

Out of the box it is worth $20 it’s not for new carvers I feel, it’s not sharp enough so extra effort is needed which is not good for safety, needs honing. I have used the felxicut jack for years now and it holds its edge and blades lock into place, we all know using this type of tool has its limitations including folding blades but to a seasoned carver it’s a nice tool, but flexicut Jack is better but you get what you pay for. (I don’t work for them by the way)😀
@itsawonderfulknife70314 жыл бұрын
That’s great for you man, but not everyone can afford $200 CDN for a carving jack that in all honesty, doesn’t seem that much different than the 24-OT if you know how to sharpen it properly. Only saying this because I own the 24-OT and have never had an issue or problem using it or sharpening. I agree you do get what you pay for, and I paid for and got a completely amazing functional carving Jack.
@paulie4x16 жыл бұрын
Say Heah William, I have a Flexcut Carving Jack, With my Flexcut, I had to make sure if I wanted a Right Handed or a Left Handed Tool. Maybe Schrade has that too ? I also think I read at a Forum the steel is 1095. That's a spring steel, so it might not chip as fast. Is it worth it, I went from a "V" Cut Spoon made from a stick, to a semi-pro spoon carver. Dilly, Dilly.,,.p
@wcknives6 жыл бұрын
Don't know about schrade either but the one I have if for a right hand. Don't think the steel is 1095. Usually spring steels are considered in the 5,000 series. Like 5,200 and 5160. Glad the tool helped you out.

Just F.Y.I. The Flex Cut tool (which I do have), has the same grinds as the Old Timer and I do see what you are saying about it being on the wrong side of the scorp. I think that is because of the angle at which one cuts into the wood to form a bowl. If it was on the other side, I think it would tend to dig a bit too much. Just my opinion though. Thanks for the review.
@wcknives7 жыл бұрын
The crooked knife I use has the grind on the other side and I like the way it carves bowls. I have used them with the grind on both sides as well. This Splinter has the geometry off on the grind and will need to be changed. The angle is to steep for the edge to bite the wood. This is why I think changing the grind to the other side will help. Appreciate your thoughts and view.

Been watching your videos for some time now. been thinking of purchasing one of your knives. then came across this. it's one thing to review a knife that is similar to another one but to say it is really high priced. kind of funny coming from a knife maker who also made a video on the fact a veiwer said he could never afford one of your knives. but we all have our opinions and I am sure your company will do well with your great knife designs. but this was like calling the kettle black to me. but best wishes.

Linkous To Bushcraft appreciate your past support and thoughts. As this video is my opinion I suppose you are entitled to yours. I will put forward this to think about. I was comparing production knives that are designed for the same function. Custom made knives are completely separate issues and fortunately no one is forcing us to buy either the custom knives or the production knives. I did say in the video I never used the other brand so I couldn't make a comparison. As for as the price for me the higher cost item was not worth the price for me because I don't use one enough to justify paying that much. But you are more than welcome to buy the one you want.

Great video! I've had the flexicut version for a few years and really enjoy using it. The Schrade handle looks more comfortable (rounded vs very square) though I do like that the flexicut blades all lock. At first mine was prone to chipping and rolling in hardwoods, but after taking it to the slips and stones twice, I've had no further issues and maintain the edges using only the honing block supplied. It serves as a very good "second stage tool", after roughing in with a belt knife or axe. A good tool to pass some time in the evenings in front of the bush TV at camp.

I have both this and the Flexcut. The Flexcut is much better, but if course, much more expensive. It's ready to cut out of the box. The Oldtimer isn't nearly as sharp and some of the grinds on the blade are bad. If you know how to sharpen carving tools and don't mind taking the time to do some serious sharpening, then this is definitely worth the cost. But, if you aren't confident in sharpening, then get the Flexcut. It's an amazing tool. Each has its place. For the cost, I'd definitely get the Oldtimer, if for nothing else, as a backup and something to practice sharpening with.

Good review, but my worry is about the broader picture. This is the pattern with Chinese knockoffs: they don't do well with innovation, but they do a very good job of stealing from someone else who's already innovated and then undercutting them on price until they've run the guy who created the market right out of it.... and then once they've killed the competition, their prices start to climb. I don't see the problem with the price of the flexcut: $108.95 (amazon)... for a quality tool made in the USA is not unreasonable by any stretch. How will you feel when you start to see the first Chinese "King Forrestman" knock-offs of your Master Woodsman hit the market? How bout when a respected peer of yours decides to put up a "review" of the Chinese product and he says "well, its not as good as Will's knife, but I would never pay $300 and wait 2years for one of his knives... so send your $50 to these Chinese crooks, it's a great value!"
@wcknives7 жыл бұрын
LOL, I already see some that are very close to my designs and I expect to start seeing more. It is the nature of the beast.There can not be copy rights on knife designs because there are no truely unique designs. After bending and shaping steel for thousands of years every shape possible has been done. I also think that since this is distributed by an American company, only fabricated in China, that the Flex cut Patten, if they had one, expired or wasn't renewed. If you prefer to buy the flex cut then be my guest, thankfully we are still free to make those choices. But remember that this knife is distributed in the US and only made in China. So the funds is going to a USA company that chooses to fabricate over seas. So I am supporting a US company that has employees in the US.

He tried it on a hard, and very dry wood. No budget knife can work on such material. For that, you need high end knife like flexcut. This knife is for beginners, for small projects, soft, semi soft woods. Also, almost all knives need sharpening out of the box... I've been using it for 2 weeks now, and I have made a teaspoon with it, 3 small coffee spoons ( not sure the English term for smaller than teaspoon?) , A rooster, an owl and even tried a duck although it ended up looking like some hellspawn lol.

This may be splitting hairs to some but the people in that distribution company have to eat too. Just something to think about.

If your reasoning is for some patriotic moral reasoning, although nonsensical in my opinion, then fine that is a moral stance on your part. But if your reasoning is because of quality then you might want to revisit some Chinese products. Kizer, We and Real Steal are Chinese made and owned and they make high quality stuff at a reasonable price. Ganzo, Ruike, and Sanrenmu are all great budget brands and Kizer and Real Steel even make budget stuff. S35Vn, D2, VG10 steels with frame locks and titanium all for a common man price. I don't care much about the loyalty to a nation thing since we get screwed by those who own American companies and the politicians that run the country anyway. Screw them all. They aint loyal to us.

William Collins It's got a good solid feel like a Swiss army knife unlike the imitations.

You may want to watch your video again. You did not call it a Chinese Knock off. Some say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In this case I don't think Flex cut would find this true. Flex cut does have a patent on the design of these blades. I have the Flex cut, it's a Very good steel, great design except for the edges of the knife needs to be filed down and best price at Woodcraft when on sale . You should try one then you will understand. Nothing more dangerous for carving then a blade that dull fast and does not lock in place. Another good pocket knife for carving is made by Oar. Thanks for your video.

Probably not those exact words but I did mention the flex cut and say this one was made in china. I would imagine flex cut let their patent laps or Old Timer could not have made this knife.

If you read read forums and watch KZfaq videos dealing with knives you will find that there is a big problem with counterfeit knives being made in China. Such as Spyderco and Benchmade. There is very little manufacturer can do. Spyderco is in the process of suing ebay. The Goverment does nothing to stop this or very little. I do not buy anything made in China that is to be used to cut, drill, shave, saw, eat or I believe it to be it to be counterfeit. You get the idea most of it's crap. Taiwan makes some great steel. As a wood carver, I have found there is a big difference between different types of steel from how easy it takes an edge and how long it stays sharp. I would rather spend my time carver then sharpening. I have found my best knives for carving are the ones I have made out of straight razors. Thanks again for your videos and your time.

Knock offs from China has been a problem for many years and for items other than knives but this knife was distributed by Old Timer so it was commissioned by them to be manufactured in China. Big difference. I think everyone should be able to choose what they will or will not buy. Diversity is alway good for everyone. Not everyone can afford a $120.00 flex cut but they may be able to afford a $20.00 Old Timer. And if it introduces one person to our passion of whittling and carving then I think it is a good thing.

I hope your right about them not being counterfeit. Do these blades lock in place because this could be a big safety issue? Lets us know how this knife works out. I am grateful for people like you who take the time to make these videos to help others. To share there passion an knowledge to help others. Thank you.

As stated in the video the blades do not lock in place like the flex cut. Blades do not lock on most jack knives and or slip joint whittlers either. As with all tools we have to learn the tool. Injury comes from carelessness, over confidence and lack of skill with the tool. The fact that the blades do not lock may be an issue during learning but once a tool is learned it becomes less of a safety issue. Appreciate your video support.

Bevel shouldn't be on the other side on the large curved blade bevel should be lower angle and it should be a bit convex it must be flat on inside. Those rounded... "blades" are gouge and scorp by the way.
@wcknives6 жыл бұрын
Ivars appreciate your view and opinion kn the bevel. Some would disagree but if that works for you then that is good. Yep, knew the names just had a blank moment.

William Collins if you will study sloyd carving you will find that all spooncarving hook knives have outside bevel
@wcknives6 жыл бұрын
Ivars not a crooked knife and just because it was always done one way doesn't meen it works for everyone. When you say something sbould be a certain way I have a problem with it but if you say that way works for me then that is great for you.

For those of you in the comments saying that this is a counterfeit knife like the fake Benchmade and Spyderco knives being made: no it is not. Whether or not Old Timer has the right to the design might be up for debate, but that's unlikely. And it is not in anyway being marketed as an actual Flex-Cut knife.

@@wcknives I ordered one but was very disappointed with it as it was blunt as hell then I sharpened it on my DMT diamond sharpeners it improved it somewhat but still not as sharp as flexcut knives I only bought the knife for the hook blade for my spoon carving makes things bit easier I prefer to use a very sharp gouge by hand its way more easier but agreed totally the bevel is too short needs further back more but bevel is in right place as my Mora hook knife has bevel in same place it cuts great 🐾🐺
