Long exposure photography opens up a world of questions and problems.
In this video, I’ll try and clear everything up for you and give you an easy process for creating beautiful long exposures.
The same rules apply, whether you are trying to get that foamy effect on water, glass effect on a lake, or car lights streaking through a cityscape.
I’ll also talk about camera settings, filters, and composition tips!
Enjoy!

My absolute pleasure. I’m somewhat passionate about people not spending cash on things they don’t need, or at least showing them a different approach to getting virtually the same results. I haven’t used a tripod for my landscape work in years, not any filters. Just a camera and a few lenses. Nice and simple! Thanks for supporting the channel :)

thank you for your insights into long exposure. To determine base shuttle speed, do I use aperture priority mode or manual mode?

Great video. So after setting aperture, shutter speed and getting focus, I set focus to manual then use app to reset shutter speed to appropriate length for whatever ND filter I will use. Is this better than or no different from just using the histogram after putting filter(s) on to get correct or desired exposure? So basically as long as you get focus locked in before adding filter(s) is it difficult for the camera to see through filters to get exposure? TY
@WilliamPatinoPhotography
@WilliamPatinoPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
Generally the histogram can work to some degree, through the filter, or even the light meter. Whatever works for you!

The only time a 5 second timer is needed IMO is really long focal lengths. My 100-400 even with a tripod leg is still settling after 2 seconds. Cheers!

Thanks Will! Can you explain any arguments for a 20 second exposure when not shooting astro? From watching your videos so far, I see you don’t usually only go as low as a second or two? I was experimenting at the beach this morning again with shutter speeds. It’s funny how you mentioned your early days of slow exposures, almost like a right of passage. I feel like I am seeing your point on speeding things up a bit more. Just curious if you have scenarios where you like a longer exposure of 20-30 or more seconds? I notice it does destroy the clouds and I didn’t like the look on the clouds above the pier today. Thanks.
@WilliamPatinoPhotography
@WilliamPatinoPhotography Жыл бұрын
Hey mate. Nope, unless you like blue hour or astro. I don't use a tripod and I like light, so no need for me to shoot long exposures at all. On very rare occasions I will shoot the aurora and that's the only time I dust off the tripod and need a long exposure. If I prefer a slower expo for water on a river and I can't get the image sharp handheld, then I shoot the frame sharp at my slowest possible speed and then take a seperate slower frame for the water, then blend in post. Hope that makes sense. It's all in my courses, if you've seen any of those .Cheers

Just wondered if I could use a polarising filter instead of ND?
@WilliamPatinoPhotography
@WilliamPatinoPhotography Жыл бұрын
For sure. That will remove 2-stops of light. NDs will removed more, depending on the opacity. That will then allow for longer exposures but a polarised can definitely help. Or just do what I do and wait until the golden hour :)

Haha, thanks. It's more covered in some of my online courses but I little hack you can try is simply shooting the landscape at a speed you know you can get it sharp, then doing a slower exposure for the water and then blend the two exposures together in post. Personally, I like speeds no longer than 1 second, and the camera I use has in-built stabilisation so I can get those speeds handheld no problem. Worth trying if you also have ibis on your camera.
