Episode 102
Willow is a surprisingly good Action RPG for the NES! it looks a lot like the Legend of Zelda, and it features that same great sword swinging action. Beyond that, this game has a significantly different feel to it - Instead of solving puzzles, its more about navigating mazes, and fighting monsters to level up.
The game is very loosely based on the 1989 Willow movie directed by Ron Howard with a story by George Lucas. You might think that Lucas Arts would make this game, but it was actually developed by a top team at Capcom!
So how did this game get made? In today's episode we'll find out, and then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* Where to find EVERY SWORD and SHIELD!
* The SECRET SHORTCUT that lets you skip a huge chunk of the game!
* EASY ways to LEVEL UP FAST!
* Where to find EVERY MAGIC SPELL!
* How to unlock the DEBUG MODE, and how to use it to beat the game in less than 5 minutes!
* A secret GLITCH to MAX YOUR LEVEL in minutes!
* EASY ways to defeat EVERY BOSS, even BAVMORDA herself... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

I missed these for sure but Jrose11 has been putting out a video a day this month, so that has kept me busy with videos to watch. The only sad part is that Pokemon runs are not good night time viewing. UCBVG is perfect to fall asleep to because I get an amazing 5 minute history, followed by some game play and then I'm out. Watching a pokemon run... well, Brock, Roxanne and Whitney are generally barriers but the climax comes at the end on Victory Road

If anyone has ever played Astalon: Tears of the Earth (a fantastic 8 bit Metroidvania) you might remember a certain cutscene that is basically just an homage to the movie Willow. I didn’t realize it at first because I saw the movie after I played Astalon, but it’s great!

I was so pumped to see this in my KZfaq news feed! This is one of my favorite NES games, and was one of the first ones I repurchased after selling most of my video game collection off in the late 2000s early 2010s. It's not a perfect game, but it is so fun and engrossing, and of course being made by Capcom, it has a phenomenal soundtrack and overall excellent presentation for an NES game.

I love this one so much that I ripped the sprites for Spriters' Resource. This is a great Action-Adventure title that has what is, for my money, quite possibly the greatest adventuring tune ever written; it starts out with a heroic feel to it, and slowly fades into a wistful notion of absorbing all the sights and sounds that pass you by on your quest. Funny story, too; I didn't see the movie until about 2004 or so, but had been playing this since it was brand new. The whole reason I watched the movie is that my significant other was a huge fan, and we'd had this long conversation about Willow, where neither knew what the other was talking about, since I hadn't realized how different the game was. Turns out I didn't care for the movie, but still love the game, so I'd definitely recommend it to anyone into top-down Action-Adventure titles.

Great to see you cover this one. I never really got super far in this game, but it's EASILY in my top five when it comes to music. Songs from this still pop into my head more than 20 years later. Only Castlevania, Mega Man 2, and a few Sunsoft games share that dubious honor...

One small correction about that ending segment about Capcom developing the Minish Cap, they actually worked on more than just the Minish Cap. They also made both Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages and from what I understand it was Capcom who approached Nintendo on developing these games since a lot of staff at Capcom where big fans of the Zelda series. In fact their idea was to make three Oracle games (each one representing one of the pieces of the Triforce) with the ability to transfer data between each entry to create a full story, unfortunately the third game had to be scraped due to the difficulty of developing three full games with data transfer between them.

I've told this story a hundred times but, this game was my first lesson as a young lad in the difference between Arcade games and console lol. I played the Arcade game, then begged my mom for the NES game despite my slightly older friends warnings that it wouldn't be the same. I was CRUSHED! Years later i learned it was a great action adventure/RPG and i missed out. I just remember being super salty and not playing it.

I remember owning this game as a kid on our NES, when I was about 6 or 7. I couldn't get past the first two snake monsters in the forest, and I thought one of them was supposed to be Bogarda himself, lol. Of course, as a kid, I gave up and moved onto other games, but something always called to me that I wish I had stuck with this title and finished it. Never looked up walkthroughs or anything because I held out hope I'd play it again someday and beat it on my own. But when I saw it pop up here, I couldn't resist watching, as I knew I'd get in depth information on all the characters, storyline, and even production on the title. To this day, I have never seen the movie, but with the announcement of the new Willow series coming out, I feel like it's a call to truly dive into the lore of this franchise, and I look forward to it. Thanks for the video, and here's holding out hope for a re-release from Nintendo to accompany the series!

And Willow was one that my cousin and I used to play A LOT. Thank you so much, your videos always hit me right in the nostalgia, and bring back great memories that I haven't thought about in years. The only thing I can think of to make them any better would be if you broke it down into "chapters" so I could skip right to the levels/areas that are giving me trouble, instead of having to skip around manually. Other than that, they are amazingly close to perfection! Fun little bit to add about Minish Cap -- that wasn't the first time that Capcom got to work with the Zelda franchise. They were also responsible for development on the Oracle duology (Seasons and Ages) for Game Boy Color.

Bro, I've been waiting for you to play this one. I remember my Grandma renting this bad boy from the video store because I loved the movie when it came out and I remember HATING IT. I picked it up a few years ago after getting my hands on a NES and enjoyed it a little more.

I LOVED this game. I was 10 when it came out and I even have a strategy guide with maps that I made with pencil & paper. Still have it somewhere

This video has the only reference to the Jackalope I've heard in nearly 3 decades. Obscure, but still classic. Bravo!

The Willow arcade game is also great fun to play today as it had a shop system and hidden secrets that's much more fun to play with unlimited credits.

I have very fond memories of playing this with one of my cousins whenever I'd spend the night over there. We had no clue what we were doing, but we had a good time anyway
