Not understanding how the disparity in bullet weight proved the murder bullet came from a different gun. It is conceivable that Jeff might have had differing brands and or weights of ammo in his gun. I guess this is what you call dramatic license. The important thing is, he got Jeff cleared.

Well, you might as well ask how come the sheriff had to risk his prisoner getting lynched? Couldn't he send for the judge by telegraph, or just send the guy he just deputized to get the judge? And the answer is the writer and director couldn't think of better way to amp up the dramatic tension. They came up with the bullet weigh theory because they couldn't think of a better way to end the trial. All in all a very weak episode. About as weak as Will and Jeff deciding it's a good idea to get involved with a town's big shooting contest, run by the richest, most powerful guy in the valley.

He had to, otherwise he couldn't be in the next episode.
